It's one of those things that the director - or anyone involved - didn't really need to confirm, by what happens in the movie the audience can tell themselves what happened. In John Wick, it's clear, by their interaction, that officer Jimmy and John knew eachother somehow and John's past job. It's something that doesn't really matter (main plot wise), but allows for the audience to "play along" and imagine their own version/explanation. I'm only saying this because that reminded me of Quentin Tarantino saying in an interview, when asked about "what was inside the briefcase in Pulp Fiction" or "why Lt. Aldo Raine had a rope burn around the neck" that it's just one of those things that the audience can come up with their own explanation/story, just based on what happens in the movie, that you don't need to insult the audience's intelligence, and sometimes the audience can come up with something amazing and you don't want to destroy that version, because it's not something that really matters (main plot wise). On that note, following Tarantino's idea, in that John Wick's scene, you could assume that the police force knows John, or that only officer Jimmy knows John, or even that Jimmy is also a hitman that works in the police force, or even that Jimmy used to be a hitman and is now just a cop, and many other versions, the possibilities were infinite; but when a director "confirms" something, that novelty is lost.

I think my favorite reactions videos are ones where there’s that moment where something’s going to happen and just change the reactor’s view(Because of seeing that in videos for “Pisces”, I’ve become a fan of Jinjer.). As soon as I hear that first “AWWW! when Daisy is shown, I immediately think,”I am looking forward to this.” As soon as Aurelio punches Iosef, that’s the moment where they are invested. Then, the “That Fuckin’ Nobody” speech. That and John’s “I’m thinking I’m back” speech still give me chills. I loved that they didn’t let Marcus go down without a fight. Such a great movie that has created a series I’ve loved.

Boom! HEADSHOT!! Fun Fact: According to Keanu Reeves, he did 90% of his own stunts in the film and memorized the nightclub fight sequence the day that the scene was filmed. Bonus Fact: The security guard who waves Wick onto the airport runway is reading the 1970s thriller novel "Shibumi" by Rod Whitaker, under the pen name Trevanian, also about a retired master assassin dragged back into the game. The story Viggo tells about how Wick once killed three men "with a pencil" is describing a crucial scene from the same novel.

I think the important thing about him rescuing the dog at the end...is that throughout everything that happened, he still lived up to his wife's final request. "You still need someone to love." And so he made sure he still had that, in spite of it all. And the fact that it was a pitbull slated to be euthanized, gives a nice symmetry to it even though it's not what his wife picked out. Two individuals with a bad reputation marked for death, walking off into the night victorious.

When the cop showed up, the best comparison I've heard for it is a dragon in a cave. When it comes out of the cave and proceeds to burn and eat the bandits in the woods, you don't go and provoke it. You thank it for not burning down the village where the normal people live and leave it alone. The cop was clearly in the know about who John is and what he does, so when he sees John has just killed masked thugs and not normal people, it's best to just leave him be to avoid unnecessary conflict.

Funny thing is Viggo would've probably escaped cleanly *if* he hadn't paid Perkins to break the rules of the Continental. But since Perkins tried to kill John *and* killed another fellow assassin on Continental grounds (a BIG no-no) apparently at the behest of Viggo, Winston revealed what he knew about Viggo's escape plan to John; Winston couldn't let the disrespect stand and basically sicced the best hitman to ever live on Viggo for free. Winston knows how to play the game.

After that puppy scene, I don't think anyone could be convinced that cruelty to animals is some minor matter. Someone else on another reaction video acutely noted that the vodka served to Iosef was bottom shelf crap vodka served in a crap glass and Viggo never drank it even though he poured himself a glass. Viggo punched Iosef and then serves himself the top shelf vodka in a high end glass and drank it by himself. His son is no longer worthy of even a drink with his own dad.

It was so easy with the police when Jimmy came to the door, because Jimmy knew who John is, and what he does already. Jimmy was just showing up to do his job and to find out how much paperwork was going to need needed. When John was being casual and forth right to Jimmy, he knew it wasn't going to be more than necessary as long as he walked away. So Jimmy did. What’s great about this movie is usually the beginning is where the writers build up the power of the antagonist by showing the reactions of the protagonist and supporting characters, but with John Wick, it’s the opposite. It’s the reputation of the protagonist that the antagonists are afraid of 😋
@lancourt
@lancourt 2 жыл бұрын
I love how the movie is built around that. You dont see a flashback of John killing a ton of people, he is just a normal guy. Then he's scrubbing the blood off the ground and glares at the camera and you KNOW, people are gonna die. Then you see everyone reacting around him, culminating in the exposition while he is taking a sledgehammer to the foundation of his world to get his guns back.

I watched a video that broke down why that reversal works, and a big part of it is that the audience is introduced to John as a normal guy in love first. Then he suffers tragedy with his wife falling sick and ending up having to pull the plug. Then another scene, where the puppy is introduced, again shows how much they loved each other - her getting him a puppy so he doesn't have to grieve her alone, and him honoring her wish and committing to taking care of Daisy. Only after we've been thoroughly taught to empathize with John do we get the other side of the story, that of the legendary assassin who even other assassins treat with caution and fear. But by that point, we're firmly on John's side as an audience, and considering the thing that drives him back into the dark is so horrible, we're just rooting for him to kill the son of a bitch who murdered a puppy. Our first impression of John is carefully constructed of a decent man who snapped after one to many tragedies, rather than the hardened killer struggling to keep it together but failing, which is probably closer to the truth. Because in any other movie, John would definitely fit the role of villain rather than hero.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned, but Marcus had John's back the entire time. He wanted the contract to be open to allow for flexibility on his part, and he didn't kill Perkins because by "business on Continental grounds" it means any type of killing within the bounds of the hotel. It wouldn't have mattered if Marcus was across the way, he still would've been subject to the rules

What I love most about the scene of John breaking the foundation while Viggo is explaining who he is is the symbolism of him breaking through the concrete to get his tools. He literally built his new life on a foundation of his old one. And in many ways, having to resort to "old habits" to deal with the grief of his current situation. Largely anger.

29:00 I've heard a reason that he shot that one time and then laughed was that there was only one bullet in the gun. It was Viggo's gun, and he had only loaded it with one bullet, because he was planning on committing suicide if John had cornered him. It doesn't look like the gun was out of bullets, but that explanation makes sense to me, so I kind of hope that it is true.

@@Arthaius Seriously? 😹 Nice story, but when you’re filming a scene, over & over, it sounds like a stretch that actors/stuntmen would get upset over the death of a stuffed dog or whatever they used in the death scene. Unlike us, the audience, who were destroyed, watching it for the first time. I do believe that the pup stole everyone’s heart that day. How could it not? 😻

@@Lestat13 - I don't think they were using a stuffed dog, of course who knows, but all I remember from the thing I read was that "acting" like he was cracking this puppy on the head apparently really bothered the guy, not that it was shown in closeup, just sort of slightly out of focus movement in the background, but perhaps the mere concept of it bothered the actor too much.

Also, the film was directed by a stuntman who’s worked with Keanu over the years (correct me if I’m wrong, Chad). And, one of the head bodyguards, the one who put up the best fight & threw Keanu over the mezzanine, is a well known stuntman/actor. You may remember him from the Matrix films & Blonde Bombshell, to name a few. His technique & the gravitas he brings to a character is probably why he’s sought after by directors & given lines, which isn’t common for stuntman 🤙🏼

12:45 I've always presumed that, living in an affluent, relatively remote area, John's neighborhood either has its own small precinct, or whatever precinct they fall under has a corrupt CO that makes sure their area is covered by a group of cops that are 'on the take', so they're familiar with John and know not to interrupt him during "business".

Every movie has its flaws, and I don't consider this a "masterpiece" (I use that word extremely sparingly), but Stahelski did an absolutely amazing job with this movie. The movie may not be a masterpiece, but the way they made us legitimately root for a mass murderer within the first 5 minutes of the movie, was pretty damned masterful. We meet John, and we're already kind of on his side because it's Keanu...and we see what a beautiful love he had with his wife, and we sympathize more, and then the loss, and the puppy...and we're firmly in his corner. And then we watch some thugs rip away the last proof of his wife's love, the last gesture she was able to show him...and they destroyed it. And at that point, we're all ready to burn the world down right alongside John. It's no masterpiece...but it was still masterfully done.
