It started with Starbucks normalizing hypercommodification and overpricing of ordinary, low-cost goods as some sort of pseudo-status signal, when it's really a cash grab, but it didn't end there with increasing profit-price spirals across many brands while incomes of everyone not rich declining over time. Can't have a status-conscious society of shoppers where nearly everyone is poor. I suspect it will be soon be a thing™ in America for lower- and middle-income people to buy shopping bags of luxury brands just to carry them around, because it fits in with gold class workers who buy salvage title luxury vehicles. If you can't buy the expensive thing, buy the fake or the shopping bag to appear to "fit in". _Sigh_ What a sad society.
