Diego Simeone reflects on the managerial career that started in his native Argentina and that took him to both Italy and Spain in the process of him establishing himself as one of the world's leading coaches.
He played for Atlético Madrid before retiring, and returning as their manager. He then led them to their first Liga title since the 1990s. Atlético have also twice being been Champions League finalists under him, and twice won the Europa League, in 2012, and 2018.

Simeone said here that he doesn't want to lock himself into a specific system but that's kind of what he did. He mostly plays with a 4-4-2, although with a lot of freedom given to his midfielders in their positioning. He tried other systems occasionally (3-5-2, 3-1-4-2) but he quickly dropped them after a few games because it wasn't working. He doesn't seem to like traditional wingers so it's complicated for him to go for a 4-3-3 for example. He's not trusting youngsters as much as before anymore. There's a lot of very promising talents at Atlético's cantera like Borja Garcés, Camello, Manu Sanchez, etc. but Simeone doesn't want to use them for some reason. The case of Rodri should be a good lesson for the club: he came out of the academy, had to leave to Villarreal to get playing time and then got bought back by Atléti after that they saw that he was actually really special.
