Diego Simeone featured for the Atletico Madrid team that won La Liga in 1996. It’s therefore fitting that he also led their success when they won it again, in 2014.
Until then Barcelona and Real Madrid had had a duopoly over the Spanish title, since Rafael Benitez's Valencia edged Barca and outlasted Real in 2004.
In this video Simeone explains how he made Atletico the Spanish champions. The Argentinian also talks about his desire to win, and revisits his two Europa League victories with Los Colchoneros.

Atletico were ruthless in those seasons. It's a pity they missed their chances at the CL trophy more than once. I think they deserved at least one during that period. Since then i think they have struggled to find the right forward in their team to replicate the success of Falcao, Cavani, Aguero such that they even brought back legends such as Torres and Costa to no effect. Many have also failed in the likes of Mandzukic, Jackson Martinez, Kevin Gameiro, etc. I hope Felix is the right one this time round. It's a new Atletico and i wish them all the best.

Needs to be more inventive, bottling that lead against juventus shows precisely how tactically inept he can be. Parking the bus in a 4-4-2 and relying on counter attacks can only get you so far.

Hankle Sacks umm I agree he needs to be more inventive attacking wise and not rely on his defensive counter attacking style but against Juventus we had several key players out who would’ve helped us very much in that second leg, Thomas Partey, Felipe Luis, Lucas Hernandez, Diego Costa.. we were spineless in that game and had to play against Juanfran at left back and Cristiano bullied him the whole game and it’s unfortunate Cristiano is a freak of nature and some aerial freak, any other team in the world without Cristiano and Atletico hold onto the lead... Simeone has never lost a champions league knockout game against a team that doesn’t have Cristiano in it
