In the late 90's we had a series of invitational tournaments in Los Angeles to which some of the top players of the time were invited. They were the Gilbert Cup tournaments.
Czech player Peter Korbel, widely credited for being the first top player to employ the "banana" receive meets Andrzej Grubba. Grubba was one of the top players in the world during the '80s and the '90s and was famous for being able to fluently switch hands to stay in the point.
