The real problem I see is us, the gamers. We allowed this to happen. We still supported this rediculious game monetization even if we clearly see that there is a big problem with this framework. It's simple supply and demand. As long there is a demand and support , they will continue. This is my 5 cents on this issue.

Yeah, and that's what bugs me the most. People allow these small steps to the wrong direction for the companies, and when you mention some issues, people tell you, you are just overrecting. But almost no one gets, that these things add up, and at the end you get the mess we are at right now.

I've been playing games since the late 1970s, so I've seen many ups and downs in the industry over the decades. The gaming scene nowadays feels weird, as if it is the best it has ever been and the worst it has ever been simultaneously. I think this video covered the "worst" side perfectly well. Given that the larger companies are run by executives who care more about their yachts and Ferraris than they care about games, it is not surprising that they would try to milk their customers dry. The problem can, perhaps, be traced to the advent of always-online multiplayer games, and it certainly became worse as mobile games became popular. An always-online game can easily be loaded up with microtransactions, loot boxes, and all the garbage mentioned in the video. Even single player AAA games have become infested with some of this crap, as gamers have sadly become tolerant of it in recent years. I never really had a chance to get used to all the scams that flooded the industry. I'm an antisocial gamer who finds the idea of having other people in my games thoroughly repulsive, so I never got into multiplayer games, and I have always hated mobile phones, so I never got into mobile games. Having stuck exclusively to old-fashioned single player games, I am extremely intolerant of always-online requirements and nasty monetization systems, so I simply won't engage with games that are too thoroughly infested with them. Most of the AAA scene has therefore become irrelevant to me, so I have learned to look elsewhere. The video also touched on the reason that the gaming scene is also the best it has ever been. With digital distribution becoming widespread and many developers becoming disillusioned with games corrupted by excessive monetization, the indie scene has exploded. This has, as expected, spawned a lot of low-end shovelware, but the good stuff tends to rise to the top. The indie developers have breathed new life into moribund genres and have experimented with new ideas. City builders and related simulation games (i.e. factory simulators, transport games, and space colony games) are doing quite well these days. Over roughly the last decade, so-called walking simulators, which are more narrative experiences than traditional games, have blurred the boundary between games and experimental literature. The best of these would be worthy of study in a college-level literature class. On occasion, an indie game seemingly comes out of nowhere and takes the world by storm. Stardew Valley and Valheim are notable examples. Games like these prove that a game can be highly successful without having microtransactions, loot boxes, season passes, and NFTs.

@@siontimmy1 with EA games it depends on how many people they expect will play the game. With games that expect large player bases like Battlefield or FIFA, they push monetisation and in game stores hard because of the number of people they'll be exposed to making it worth it. In more niche games, the only way they'll make a return usually is if they make a good game first. See It Takes Two, Unravel, and some of their other smaller games. I had this conversation the other day with some friends. Games also used to be art. They were made by guys who loved games and were passionate about making something THEY loved to play as well. Look at the music alone. From NES to Sonys ps1. The soundtracks alone on these games are so memorable that people formed bands and toured the world playing those soundtracks. I can still remember the music from Contra, Double Dragon and Space Harrier to Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong, FFV and Resident Evil. Games started takingna huge dive when big companies got extremely greedy. On another note I just watched a few videos of upcoming pc games of 2022 and couldn't believe how let down I was while most other people were extremely pumped. Many of these videos end up talking about good games in the past and bad games today without explaining what makes good games good and bad games bad. You were able to do both. I think currently one of the best games available on the market is Deep Rock Galactic. I don’t wanna write too much but they offer few only a few DLCs as a way to support the developers while using the games as a service model. There’s a battle pass and a grind to unlock everything but it’s not unreasonable and is really fun to have stuff to work towards. The community is incredibly welcoming and friendly, and most importantly the developers are really transparent with their community and try to work with them to make everyone happy. I even think we’re seeing a change in the industry, especially with all of these recent AAA flops when compared to the insane indie successes. Look at Inscryption with its massive replayability and new ideas being brought up throughout.

I have also wondered at length whether I'm just getting older and more cynical... But I don't think that's the case. This video is so on point throughout. The slow creep of corporate interest is ruining games. The introduction of loot boxes into single player games like assassin's creed and shadow of war back in 2015 or whatever should have jolted people awake... I work in the industry as an artist and I feel so completely jaded by it all. From the get go we have to consider battle passes, seasons, skins. Not making a quality game and an interesting universe. I hate it. But everyone is doing it, there's no alternative.

The problem is, that with the economie as it is, you will loose a great part of the market, as they said peasens dont have money for it, i love games since i have memories, and now, nothing is intresting, i pass more time watching old retro games, than modern gameiing, wich all look the same, there is nothing, every good idea is destroy in the name of publishers, nothing, the lack of creativity, even small studios want to do the same thing. Is like they forget how to make games, i am playing mobile and beleive me, i have seen many cases of games that start fun and intresting to devolve into microtransaction heel, not worth, and yet people pay for them, even when gameplay is so boring is not even worht your time. As for me as you said, the industry is so focus, into adventure or cinematic, or games where you have loot boxes for me it dies there. The last games i play i have fun were dragon crowns, Valkiria chronicles in PS3, and for PS4, was conan exiles, as for PC, i would love to try battlefleeth gotich armada, battlestar galactica deadlock, othercide, motosport manager and that is it, nothing else call mi atention

I was super hyped for BF2042 and then the beta and game came out and I have only played it 5 hours because it's just not fun. Halo Infinite has been great in terms of gameplay, but there is so much lacking. It's a massive difference if you compare it to Halo 3 and Reach. Something needs to change, and I think we as gamers should be the one taking action. How can we let these game studios get away with releasing games that are lacking so much compared to previous games? I just don't know how ...

High budget games need exceptionally skilled managers to keep everything on track, because high budgets and increased scope means more complexity and more required members of management, and if you mess it up trying something new that’s more money wasted in the failure. You want innovation, go find yourself some shorter games with worse graphics- less time spent on the looks means more time available to use on gameplay, and you usually end up seeing smaller teams that are able to organize and execute upon an idea better than the megaprojects with 500 developers working overtime all the time, and more security to make games that touch on controversy in a genuine way without just using it for free advertising and us military propaganda funding.

People see NFTs and the blockchain being integrated into newer games with developer cuts and are rightfully outraged, but what they forget is that Valve has been doing essentially that for years, just without the 'blockchain technology' buzzword. They take a 5% cut from every player-to-player purchase made on the Steam Community Market (but that cut is increased to 10% for games people actually play and trade on, such as TF2, CS, and Dota). This 'new' system has been around for a long time.

I really think there's numerous reasons why games feel like a hassle to play. Honestly, most of it is needing a break from gaming, especially if you turn on the console/pc and just look at hundreds of games for an hour trying to figure out what you wanna dedicate your limited time to. It doesn't help that games bite off others, and its understandable; if there's a formula that works, why not copy it and tweak it ever so slightly so it's not blatant rip off. Plus, some of these games feel like chores, because they are; look at GTA Online, the grind to get the fun stuff without spending real money. Theres Destiny 2, and the fomo on "broken" weapons/builds before they get nerfed. Theres the sports games like Madden, MLB, NHL, and NBA games have their online "ultimate team" where you grind the game or, like GTA Online, open your wallet. Take a break, watch some new shows you've missed out on, or movies, go read a book, start working out/lift weights, go find some hiking trails.

Honestly, I think a BIG point that got glossed over here is that we allow this stuff to happen. Even though we all say we’re gonna be cautious of the next COD when it comes out, it still magically ends up getting pre-ordered. Something that should be mentioned is that if A) These companies are pumping out low effort games And B) they’re all basically designed around a store and making money Then just don’t by the game. The best way that you can get someone to pay attention to you is hitting them in there pocketbook, so the next time a big game comes out that looks like it could be a real home run, just wait a couple months for it to come out to see if it’s worth the time of day. Because when it inevitably doesn’t quite live up to the massive hype companies put out for their game, they’re the ones losing out, not you. That’ll at least put a stop to all these games that are basically just fronts for a store page.

No matter how shit the game is, pre orders from hyped players are guaranteed revenue, thus reduced urge to make sure they're happy about the product

This is why I like alot of Nintendo games, yes you pay $40-$60 to buy them but you get so much content with it and there aren't many purchases afterwords besides dlcs For example breath of the wild sequel is taking very long to release buts that's okay because I feel as they are trying their best to make the game the best they can instead of rushing it in for money

I couldn't disagree with this thesis more tbh. It's crazy how many amazing titles with insane replayability are either dirt cheap or completely free. Apex Legends, Valorant, Quake Champions, and new and interesting indie games like Factorio. Gamers are spoiled for choice these days. I couldn't be more pleased with the products that have been coming out recently.

Thank you for making this video. It's time for a video game revolution. All indie developers unite. I actually started learning game development because I got so sick of this new game model, and I've been having more fun learning how to make games than I've had in years playing games

Back then, when games came in CDs or cartridges companies only had one shot to polish their game as much as possible and publish a good final product. Now, companies can update their games whenever they want. This is not necessarily a bad thing but the problem arises when companies rush the release of a game to get quick money in the hopes of saving it through updates.

Which is why I prefer indie games and AA production games. Stuff like Undertale, Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight and 100 other indies all provide far more satisfying experiences than most EA/Activision published games. I'm so sick and tired of having to wait a year after a game is released for it to be actually complete. It's not enough to pay $70 for a new AAA game, now we have to download patch files that are 10+ GBs each in file size and then they purposely make a game slow to level up because they want you to buy microtransactions. Fuck that. As far as I'm concerned, the PS2 generation was the last truly great era for AAA gaming. Since the PS3/360 era in 2006 - 2013, it's just been a slow and steady decline for modern gaming.

it was better back then when if you wanted to unlock a new level or get bonus features you would just beat the game or certain parts of it....it was my favorite part when i got new features by beating the main game...

This is why I love developers like Capcom and From Software where we get the game and maybe a dlc expansion with it. But with games like Monster Hunter most extra hunts are free and the events are free where you pay nothing more. More companies need to be like them.

Are you actually using capcom as a good example? The same company that was horrible with dlcs not less than 5 years ago? The same company that had to promise that street fighter 5 was gonna be only one game because they are infamous for realising the same game several times? That capcom?

@@cractor6307 Did I say they were perfect? No. I was using them as an example with Monster Hunter where that series has been treated very well. I never said everything they did was a good move just that the franchise that I play from them is done well. Rereleasing a game over and over again is just for money and their a company and will do it because it's easy money for them to get while working on new games. And if you have a problem with the rereleasing of a game don't buy it.

Extremely well made, however I feel like this view is only for us people who have played games for a while and care about the gaming industry as a whole. The majority of the people are ones who just don’t care that much and will throw their money at the game without thinking about it. Or just people who are tired of it all and give in and give some money for a game they’re hooked on

I know Elden Ring is still huge and people really like it, but the amount of hyperbolic praise is staggering. Not everyone had a good experience with Elden Ring, especially when you had awful performance and hated the open world aspect. I spent $60 on a game I can barely play on a PC more than capable of running it with constant freezes and stuttering. Some people also experience invisible enemies. It needs a ton of QoL features implemented. Till then, I won't buy the narrative this is the LAST big studio that cares. Comments like this are part of the problem.

Here's what i think is the problem. The Players themselves. Somewhat Delusional, Somewhat arrogant, Somewhat vain. Not trying to have fun while playing the game, just trying to over-analyze it. The community has gotten way too cynical with a bad mindset and some bad habits. Thinking at All Modern games have gotten bad is unreasonable. There has been a plethora of great video games within the recent 7 years. Undeniable fact. I also cannot stand how a lot of people are like "All Companies and Corporations are Bad and Greedy" Along with their Delusional entitlement. The Anti-corporate mindset is just downright toxic, which also discredits and hazes the Passionate people who did work on the game, but they just see them as Companies. Looking for flaws to out the game, witch hunting anybody that enjoys the game. That's the thing. NOTHING is good enough for them. If Gaming has gotten metrically worse in the way explained, Why have there been record-breaking sales and play activity recently? So, i think the problem here, is Gamers that have gotten way to cynical and delusional, who, A, Don't really know what they want in a video game, B who can't see anything for what it is, but instead rip into one video and say that every other is bad. Clinging to the delusion that Everything back then was better, that is also corrupting their vision of today's games. There's an old saying, the customer is always right. It originally meant The customer's taste was always valid. But For gamers that is false, Because if they're trying to make bold, but dense claims like these, then their taste is terrible.
