I remember the custom home builder using one of these to dig the basement for a new 1800 sq. foot home, next door to my home, in about 1968 or 69 up in Garden City, Michigan (suburb of Detroit.) It was the coolest thing watching them work for hours. Thanks for bringing back the memories, Chris.

❤ I spent many hours in a shovel in the '70's But it was a 1959. One thing my supervisor said, "Keep the end of the stick lower than the cabin!" I made the mistake and blew the windows out one day. Because the stick hit the roof of the cabin. Yep, it wasn't below the cabin. It scared the HELL out of me!

Nice Army surplus machine. Rear of operator small round plug known as a "slave cable receptical" to jump start if battery was dead. Also the camo and rust paint job leads me to believe it came from the Ft Drum NY area. We had one just like it in the early 80's while I was in the 76th Engineer Battalion at Drum we used it in the quarry where we got trap rock for the roads down range. Really in great shape. enjoy!!

I'm not going to say that machine is not from the 70s, but I think it is way older than 1970. The engine maybe newer and it does run smooth as silk! I googled excavators and 1970 and they haven't changed much look wise as the new excavators you have now. All the Caterpillar stuff was hydraulic as far as I could see. I'd be curious to know, I'd guess 1950s or older just based on the 5 minutes I looked around.

And then (at least) one of those side-boom tractors from pipe-laying. But he wouldn't have the time to use that equipment instead of the 850J. - Pity: imagine him and Man Behind The Scenes each operating one of those old machines. Slapstick! :-)
