We were just trying to do something good, when some power tripping customs agents who were apparently bored that day decided to throw everything they could at me. Even though both agents had completely different ideas of what these chairs were classified as, and what laws I broke by trying to bring them in to the country, both were adamant about the fact that THEY were right. After a very long detainment and a story that I will tell in full once this all blows over, it was made very clear that if I tried to bring these chairs into the country again I would be arrested on the spot.
I have to say a huge thank you to ‪@BruceCookfmx‬ for doing everything he could on his end to get the situation worked out, Chase Barber from ‪@EdisonMotors‬ for offering to hop in his pickup and drive down to the border on the spot to argue on my behalf and try to come up with a solution, and the cyber security company Aura for offering to sponsor this video in support of the project. They've ALL been weird power tripping hostile and insulting. Every single last one. The last straw back in '97 was some 250 lb woman who said: "Construction workers don't get 2 weeks off" when I told her I was on my 2 week vacation, going to see the Grand Canyon. in 2018 I traveled from Japan to Canada for a visit, I'm a Canadian Citizen, and my flight took me through LAX (oh man what a $hit show that place was) then to Vancouver, and then to my hometown. At that point, I rented a car, a minivan, that had Ontario plates on it. I went to Oregon to visit friends, and got through the border to the US with just a few questions and a "Welcome to the USA". I was traveling with my adult daughter who is Canadian/Japanese. We visited friends and went back to my hometown. At the border entering Canada, we got detained. They could not read my "Japanese" driver's license, which is why I had an "International" driver's license, they wanted me to pay a $150 fee to have my Japanese driver's license translated... 🙄 which I refused to do as my International driver's license was valid. The not-so-bright border agent said that my Japanese driver's license could be anything how did he know... I pointed out that the international driver's license listed the number on my Japanese driver's license. Then they wanted to know where I went and who I visited, I told them "Friends in the US" and they wanted names and addresses, which I refused to give them. Next, they questioned why I was driving a car from BC with Ontario license plates...? I told them it was a rental and they had the car's registration, my rental agreement, etc and maybe they should ask the rental car company, I just took the car they offered. They told me it was suspicious that I was from BC but driving a car with Ontario license plates. In the meantime they had taken everything out of the car and just threw our stuff on the ground like trash, they opened up our suitcases and tossed our clothes on the ground. My daughter started to record them doing this and they took her phone and told her she would not get it back. Next, they started with my daughter who had just graduated from UBC with an engineering degree (proud papa!) as she had both a Japanese and Canadian passport, they were concerned that she did not have a visa to be in Canada, this low IQ agent actually asked her where her visa was on her Japanese passport to be allowed to be in Canada while holding her Canadian Passport in the same hand. We were detained for about four hours until an older wiser agent finally showed up, he went over everything, and he went to hand me back all of our paperwork and said we could leave, I said that we should get an apology from the other agents who made such a mess, he withdrew the paperwork and said "Shall we strip search your daughter?" (there were only male agents in attendance). I said "no" and took our paperwork back, we spent maybe 30 minutes repacking our suitcases and other stuff into the rental car and returned to my hometown. My family was outraged at the whole deal, and my mum knew the local MLA she used to babysit him, he came and talked to us, I gave him all of the details the names, etc of the people who did this and... nothing happened. The MLA later explained that the border agents were Federal and BC the province could do nothing, in fact, the border agency said they had no record of the incident. We did nothing wrong or illegal, all of our paperwork was in order, and neither myself nor my daughter has ever been arrested, not even a traffic ticket in the last 30+ years but this is how we were treated by Federal thugs with badges. Sorry for the long rant, but it's good to tell these stories, I've not told this one publicly until now because my daughter was still living in Canada and I did not want her to get any blowback, she no longer lives in Canada. Thanks for reading my story, I hope that someone gets their chit straight and lets Casey drop off the off-road non-regulated electric bikes soon. Cheers from Tokyo! PS This was all pre-¢ovid

Then I was told to either shut my mouth or be refused my entry into the USA. I am embarrassed that you were screwed around so badly but the way things are now, you almost need to talk to a Lawyer to get all the facts on what is legal before you leave. Best story told to me by a friend was he had been hauling his own hay from Canada into the USA to sell to farmers that were short of hay. He had over the weeks hauled several loads into the USA. A few weeks later he had to go into the USA for some farm parts and went with his crew cab ford pickup. That pickup always in the back seat was littered with papers and junk and the occassional receipt. As he came back into Canada the border patrol said to pull over for inspection. They opened the hood and found nothing , then pulled all the waste in the back seat area outside with the result of a large pile on each side of the truck on the pavement. He had been told to wait inside while all this played out. The found nothing and was told he was free to leave. He walked over to the truck and quickly retrieved a few receipts and then got in the truck to leave. As he backed out of the stall to leave they came running over and demanded that he clean up the mess. He smiled and said that it was in his truck and they pulled it out and created the mess and they were entitled to keep the mess and he drove off. He had never had a problem before at entering into the USA of re entry into Canada. He said he was going to avoid that crossing for a little while because there were other crossings within a reasonable distance.

The fact of the matter is that he did not set himself up for success. Even if the trailer had been empty he would’ve been refused entry. Yes, the signature thing was stupid, even if legally correct, but so was driving an unregistered trailer. If he was entering to visit with none of the other stuff going on, the officer would have handed it back and told him to sign it. When you’re driving a trailer illegally, importing commercial goods, those commercial goods are potentially regulated, yeah, you’re going to get hit with everything. When you cross international borders you need to have your ducks in a row, you don’t wing it. If there’s any proof that they weren’t out to get him, it’s that they let him withdraw his request for entry rather than fining, arresting or formally refusing him entry.

Truckers used to know where the worst ones were and detour if possible, but modern joined up communications have put a stop to people using their initiative. They certainly earned one of your I hate Casey Ladelle T-shirts plus a dose of karma for hindering and stealing time and money from a humanitarian cause. I really do hope those disability bikes legally get to where they were promised asap. Kudos to your friend Ben for driving all the way up there and back to help. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the way things were supposed to be enforced. I think you could cross without a test, but you had to quarantine for 2 weeks. I've had the opposite experience. My entries into Canada have always been pleasant. It's my return back to the US that has usually been a problem with egos of Border Agents and that was usually the ones at the "gate". When I was told that they wanted to empty my U-Haul truck because the lady at the "gate" didn't believe that being an Alaskan for so many years that she couldn't believe that I didn't have furs and trophies that I wasn't acknowledging. When I entered the facility, it was shift change. A supervisor asked why I was there, I told him and he replied that it would be awhile for shift change. He came back a short later and asked again why I was there and then asked if I cared if they searched the truck. I told him no and he sent me on my way. After traveling across western Canada for several days going and coming from Alaska, the last thing you want is some ego power US agent giving you a hassle.

Searched me and my car, tore it all up and left everything on the ground. When they checked my ID apparently Canada gives them all my personal information. I had a court date on a very minor charge ( The charge got thrown out before it even went to court.). Long story they said I was a fugative fleeing Canada to hide in the USA. I told them I have a steady job and house and property in Canada so not running away. They wrote me up and escorted me back to the Canadian side and turned me over to the security on this side. If I go back to the border I will be arrested on sight and jailed as an illegal. This is so stupid if I flew to Mexico I could come over and the governement would give me bus fare and a cell phone. I guess I can put in my two cents.... After 911 the border going into Canada became progressively more hostile it seemed to just about anyone. A little background about myself, I'm a tour bus driver with about 20 years behind the wheel at the time. I brought in a group of perhaps the most harmless group you can imagine a group of senior citizens for a tour of the Canadian Rockies. The border patrol pulled off a passenger who was using a walker and 80 years old and proceeded to treat him like a terrorist, practically drag him off, complaining the whole way why he could not walk like a "normal" person, arrest him and deport him. Turns out he got into a fight when he was 20 years old and had an assault conviction - that's it. A 60-year-old charge. Nothing else. I stopped driving Canadian trips after that, I told my boss he can give them to someone else. It's been 20+ years and I am still driving the lower 48.

Heading back into America, the agent asked why we were coming back so soon and a couple other questions, then waved us on through. I could understand why they were asked. It was biz as usual. Sadly, the times have changed in so many ways. Politics aside, everyone seems to be at each other's throats these days. Especially if they think they've been wronged or you're questioning their opinion in some way. It really shows in the relationships between those in positions of authority and the public. Just look what flight agents deal with in airline traffic these days. Not saying it's right but the confrontational attitude and lack of civility is on both sides. Don't think all agents are abusive from power alone. They're often treated poorly by the public as well. They held me up for four hours before turning me back and telling me that I can't go back any more without proof of employment in Canada, and full documentation that my taxes are paid up for some reason. They kept grilling me as to what I was really going there for, and by the time I knew they weren't letting me in regardless what I said, I guess I shouldn't have said that I was really going there because I had a date with his wife. I've only had one interaction with Canadian Border staff. Three years ago I was driving a tractor trailer rig in the Buffalo NY area and mistakenly got on the ramp to go over the Peace Bridge into Canada. When I got to the Canadian Customs agent on the other side of the bridge, the first thing I said to him was, "I have absolutely no business being in Canada. I got stuck on the ramp." He chuckled, said it happens all the time, then directed me to pull off into an area to wait until they could get someone to lead me back on to the Peace Bridge going in the opposite direction. 20 minutes or so later, a police car escorted me through a couple of automated gates and got me back on the bridge. Very low-stress on the part of the Canadians, and even the US Customs when I went back over to the US side. My fears of being detained never materialized. Maybe it's just the BC Customs agents that are anal?

I’ve had problems at the Canadian border myself. They denied my boyfriend entry for a case from 1972 when he was a teenager that was dropped, but never cleared off the books. How the Canadians even had that information is puzzling. He was told that he would have to be rehabilitated which is a money grab on Canada’s part. The whole thing would have been laughable if not so infuriating. Boyfriend did 25 years in coastguard with a security clearance and retired as a mail carrier! The Canadian border guards are ridiculous and arbitrary!

That is the sad thing. You can call them and ask what is needed. They tell you. When you try to do what they said you could someone else says no. Now it's not simple because there is a report that says that Canada doesn't believe what you said. The reality is that all the customs officer needed to say was that we have different laws than the USA. I noticed that you don't have a valid passport, placing a finger on the signature line. And you are in a commercial tow truck, pulling a illegal trailer. So I can't let you through. I'm sorry but I need to detain you while I do an investigation. After the investigation they should have just said. We are not going to be able to allow you to enter with this truck and trailer. You don't have the proper paperwork. If you want you can have someone meet you at the border tomorrow and get the load. If your passport isn't valid then we will still not be able to allow you to enter Canada. Why is it hard to tell someone what they need to do. Instead of telling them that you are never going to be allowed to enter the country. Now it's not a simple thing and the government officials are going to have to get involved because of one thing. Laws are different between the two countries. So I guess now I'll wait to see if the queen and the president will have to get involved. Sorry I'm from the USA and I believe that the English queen is like your president of Canada. Please let me know if I'm wrong. Still is sad that they didn't say what could be done. Chase has had to get things from the border for the same type of things. Lastly thanks for protecting the border of your country. The last thing that I would want to see is that tow truck being impounded for driving without the proper paperwork.

Yes Where you going? Myrtle beach S.C. How long? 2 weeks Unseen by him.The wind catches his ash And it blows out the window onto the pavement ...."Sir i am going to remind you while in the United States of America There is no littering" Confused at this My friend finds the comment odd With raised Eyebrows He says OooK i will keep that in mind Thanks for the tip! She was then going to say a whole thing about her being a "Border Agent" And could deny us entry If she felt like it..But it did not go that far " Ok so Let me ask you something Funny guy What do you do for a living?" -- I'm a Comic ! "Well mister comic Pull into lane 2 for inspection" ======= Longer story short He was a mid level comic (Mid level meaning he was getting paid to come to shows) Now if he did not have a flyer paper with the name of the comic club And his name on the roster we would of been toast...The supervisor asked him why he was giving his agent a hard time..Answer was : I followed all her instructions I answered all her questions I was friendly And calm I committed no offences. Where was the hard time? You told her smugly your a comic...My friend tells the super to look in the glove box for a yellow flyer ...We were free to leave And got a sorry about that. And yeah shes new And this will be her last issue with interactions We had complaints before 1 year later ..We were stopped And questioned Because on a joke before going to the border I wanted Buffalo wings ...So we drove to buffalo Why not yes? ...This Idea to a border agent was beyond measure "I know for a fact They have Buffalo wings in Canada So what is the real reason for entry in the the US?" Hey man really we are going to the bar downtown where it all started So we can say we had wings in the city of Buffalo. 30 mins with this clown ...unreal Going into Canadian As Canadians is lesser than brutal But your still cutting onions ....Pulled in the lanes for not declairing a 98 cent post card of Jackson Mich Nascar track But out of a few trips We actual got a "Welcome back/Home" oddly Eh!

A word of warning: if you have ever been turned back at the Canadian border (refused entry) for any reason, when you attempt to cross the next time they will ask, "Have you ever been deported from Canada?" If you say "no", you will be charged with "illegal re-entry", and "lying to a customs officer". You then are at their mercy. This happened with our educational group 40 some years after one member was turned back in 1972 for telling the truth that he was mistakenly arrested as a teen, and no charges were ever filed. My last experience crossing alone to canoe and fish was a four hour delay and complete unpacking of my gear before being allowed.

When there was a shift change they agreed he could enter the USA it was too late and they returned to Canada. Perhaps the lesson learned is only tell them what they want to hear and move on.

Like 30 years ago, I wanted to go up and spend a week camping in British Columbia. So I loaded my little subcompact car with all my camping gear and headed for the border. I was detained because I didn't have a credit card (I was pretty young.) They said I had to prove financial solvency with either a credit card or $100 cash (remember when $100 was a lot of money?) I had all the food I needed and I'd filled up with gas before I got to the border, so I didn't think I needed lot of cash. I went back to the nearest US town and waited until the bank opened the next morning to empty my savings account. This time they waved me across without a second glance. I did go camping, but the whole episode left a sour taste in my mouth. I haven't been back to Canada since.

The last time I drove into Canada via WA in 1989 the guy in front of me got caught with weapons in his truck. The rest of us in line behind him suffered the consequences. My car was basically stripped and not just inspected. All interior panels were removed. It was also left for me to reassemble. Spent 4 hours there. I was on a trip from eastern PA to AK so I had lots of camping gear. They were rude and treated us like crap. Thanks for all your work and intent on this project and all you do for others. Peace Bro

So sorry to hear about your experience at the Canadian border. Am praying for you and your trip up there. I haven’t tried to go there since Covid. I’m sure it ‘ll happen.

I'm Canadian and went through similar problems at the American border and even worse. I think most border patrol agents are not friendly.

As a Canadian from Alberta. I am camping right now near the BC/Montana border. I would love to cross at Roosville, Montana, and camp south of Rexford, but it’s not worth trying to come back into Canada… especially with 2 dogs. They are complete a-holes on the Canadian side. It’s like they get offended for Canadians visiting the USA! Drove to Sturgis, Rushmore, then Vegas, 7-8 years back. Crossing at Coutts/Sweetgrass was a breeze going into the states. Coming back at the same crossing was a nightmare. Questioned us about everything, wanted to know why we went, how we spent our money, etc. in the end, they just wanted money. Glorified tax collectors are all they are.

I went through many border crossings as a truck driver. Generally speaking US agents are a bit nicer but it very much depends on where you cross. Kingsgate/Eastport is good either way you cross, at least from my experience. Getting back North takes a while now since Canada refuses to open more than a single lane and there is lots of holiday traffic. But at least I have never seen anyone pulled out for an inspection there except for buses with 20+ people onboard, which I find to be reasonable

I used to go across all the time through the coutts border never once had an issue from the Americans every time I come back to Canada my truck is searched my phone is gone through every surface is swiped for drugs I'm asked every question under the sun. It became so normal to me I new the agents names how long it took and usually napped for half hour as they search my truck. It's become part of the process for me. I'm always polite and it usually takes about a extra hour.

That or His two sketchy friend who are trying to bully Customs Agents! Do these yahoos not understand that Canadian customs and American Customs work together? They are protecting our Countries from illegal or worse things from happening.

Once a proud Canadian, I can say I have never been so embarrassed to say where I am from under our current legislation, or can I align with the people that voted in that direction. I would say leadership but the numbnuts in power will never be my leaders. They say history repeats itself, well here we are 45 years later worse off than ever. My condolences Casey, it seems you took most of the pre-requisite steps for the border crossing.

I'm a retired consulting mechanical engineer who's worked throughout the US for 35 years. 25 years ago, two engineers I worked with had separate but very similar miserable experiences to yours. And I even had trouble walking across the international bridge at Niagara Falls to see the falls from the Canadian side. Seems that the border agent didn't believe I wasn't pack'n heat, LOL! Unbelievable!!!! Shortly before I retired, a good client wanted to retain me to work on his behalf in Calgary, Alberta. I said NO THANK YOU! He was shocked and disappointed, but after watching your vid, I know I did the right thing. I have zero interest in traveling to Canada for any reason!

That is a dumb reason. You got one bad border guard and that turned you away from visiting the entire country? Grow up dude. I get stopped every time crossing from Canada to the US for really dumb reasons, and I still go. The last time was literally because it was end of shift and the lady pulled 7 cars in line so she could leave before the other guard came in to replace her-had to go to secondary screening because of a shift change.

What would coming to Alberta have to do with Canada? I'm originally a Canadian that immigrated to Alberta 25 years ago and still suffer from Culture shock everyday. As long as you keep your Trump 2024 flag flying on your black Dodge Ram with the 3' lift kit, you'll blend in just fine.

@@corail53not a dumb reason I willnt visit the US only because I have to come back to my home in Canada and get the third degree and potentially detained for hours just because my childhood trauma that was caused by police resurfaces and makes me stutter and sweat and seem real nervous when I'm just on the fringes of a panic attack. CBS don't give no shits about someone having a panic attack.
