If the little centering "fan" restricts airflow too much, just cut off every other blade (or more). You only really need three to hold the nozzle centered...

I believe the primary use of the guide vanes is to mix air and fuel for better combustion and of course centre the nozzle.

If necessary, you could increase airflow through the swirl plate by removing alternate fins.

Mark... I am enjoying watching part two of the Diesel Foundry Furnace Burner. Somewhere around the 12-minute mark, you're talkin about the OCD part of your brain needing to make the handles of your carts the same. I couldn't agree more with all your reasons for making them the same, but you missed one; you had fun doing it. Thank you for all you've done to help others raise the bar on their projects.

Typing correction fluid makes a great resist for silver solder. It's pretty much liquid chalk, and whatever they use for a binder burns off cleanly in all the ones I've tried.

In addition to removing fins as others have suggested, you could make the center hole smaller and use the diameter of the threaded end of the nozzle to hold the swirl plate. Also, you might want to bend the lid handle closer to the furnace handle to get it further away from the exhaust hole in the lid.

Thank you most kindly for the lesson. The hardest part are the names and variation of components. example. a quarter turn tapered plug valve. the injector information and how to understand it's function, just excellent. I cannot use a lathe, more is the pity. But i have designed my own still, which i have prototype and debugged. Now i wish to build a full scale version 1000l and heating has been a problem. I have been looking at the diesel burners in alibaba, and they are just a perfect solution. knowing how they work was so essential, so thank you. The 340w blower gives off about 120kw. if you are interestd. i didn't know diesel had so much calorific energy. So you have confirmed for me the way to go, and.. how i should design the inlet ports. ❤

Diesel fuel is still relatively cheap but an alternative would be bio diesel. Regards, Mark

You may know this already but automotive voltage is technically not 12v. 12v is about the minimum voltage for starting the engine but should be 13 to 14.5 when the engine is running and is dependent on the state of charge of the vehicles battery and the load on the alternator. The lower the battery voltage or higher the load the closer the alternator will be to 14.5v so running the fuel pump at 12v you are not getting it's full potential where 14v would be the best in the long term. I also agree to keep the nozzle holder simple but this is your project and if we don't try new things we will never learn what works and what doesn't. Besides I'm just some random person in another country being a keyboard engineer enjoying you building something that I may want to make someday. Cheers

Interestingly, I was running the fuel pump from a 0 to 30V DC power supply and I tried running the pump on voltages above 12V but it didn't seem to increase the fuel pressure or the RPM of the pump at all. That was a bit of a disappointment since I was hoping I could "overclock" the pump to get a better fuel flow from it. I know that I go over the top on some details of my builds sometimes but for me, that is what makes the project interesting. I like to try new procedures and even if they fail, they can be instructional just the same. I had to make a press tool for the new version of the swirl plate and although it was probably unnecessary, it was fun to see how closely I could get the punched hole to the size I needed to make it a press fit on the burner nozzle. Donald, I just checked out where you live on Google Maps. Man, you are remote! I noticed you had a Uqqurmiut Centre For Arts & Crafts. We bought a beautiful Inuit sculpture of a polar bear by Ashevik Adla when we were in Montreal a few years ago and we fell in love with the arts and crafts from Cape Dorset. We had no intention of buying the sculpture when we walked into the gallery but the very tall and very blonde and very sexy sounding French accented Roxanne soon won me over much to the disgust of my wife. However the sculpture made it back to Australia in pristine condition and it is much admired by guests to our home. We badly want to travel back to Canada for another holiday but with airfares so outrageously high at the moment it may have to wait. I love how you can zoom in forever on Nunavut and there is just nothing there. No roads, no settlements, just wilderness. Keep posting those videos. Small world that you love Inuit Art, Cape Dorset is the center of Carving. We have a few big carvers in Pang but mainly Printing is the big thing here. Sadly that is getting less, doesn’t pay so well for folks. Your right on the Airfares… it stopped us in our tracks this summer as we were planning a trip to Europe! The post Covid recovery seems to be taking a while! The freedom and space is incredible here, fishing trips with an 80mile drive out on the sea ice can take yer breath away. Take care!

The provider has been doing things that enriches corporate while the content creator ( which in my mind does ALL of the work) isn’t compensated properly for their work. AI once told what to do is literally free. A shame that the working person once again suffers while the rich just keep on getting richer. Great that you got the opportunity to chat with Karen and Kurtis, I’m sure that was long in coming and enjoyable for all. This project is really interesting, and your work on it is as usual top notch. I am quite surprised that you don’t enjoy the art of welding, I rather still do, even after doing it full time for way too long. I may be dating myself, but 45 years ago I had an oil fired furnace. The blower, fuel pump, and ignition coil were an integrated self contained unit. I do not know if they are still used but superficially it would appear to save a lot of stress inventing.

just snap half the fins off the swirl plate if it's too restrictive. With half the vanes it's still going to have an effect and provide support.

Very interesting and well thought out thanks Mark. When I was bending copper bus bar for substations years ago we used a lot of oil on the tube. This made it easier and helped prevent creasing and kinking.

so your making an oil burner ( mini version) if you un screw back filter to the nozzle youl see whats called transandental dents these mack the fuel sweril w2ile also being misted if your going to put a turbulator (or whats called a retention head in the oil industry) you should see to it that the a swerls in the opposet direction as the oil this helps with attamization sorry for poor spelling but you get the jist

I did get the burner running today and it was very satisfying to see the flame swirling and tightly constrained. Maybe I just fluked the direction of the vanes but it seems to work well. Regards, Mark

I will make another one from some thin stainless steel and twist the vanes almost parallel to the air flow. Seen front on, it will be mostly open. I actually made a prototype from stainless today. Regards, Mark

Hi Mark. Why not make some kind of bracket that will allow you to use propane and diesel burner without a need to rotate furnace? I do not think it's too complicated. Just bit bigger tube, so diesel burner fit nicely inside, cut on one side so fuel line can pass, and some kind of sleave on gas burner so it also can fit inside it. That way, you can quickly preheat furnace with propane, and do a quick switch to diesel.

Yes, that would work. Preliminary tests today show that the burner will light up on the bench and the flame is stable. Next test is inside the furnace. Regards, Mark

Hi Preso, Another top video. I made a similar burner (not your design) and it created a really beaut flame. I used heating oil in mine, you might like to give it a try. If you can't get it I believe it's half diesel and kero mix and gives a cleaner blue flame. Apparently straight diesel burns a bit sooty.

I am still keen to try adding kerosene but I have had some bad experiences with kerosene deteriorating plastic parts. I used to keep kerosene in one of those trigger pump bottles but they never lasted long. There is not a lot of heating oil used up here in the subtropics but diesel is surprisingly cheap at the moment. At one point it was more expensive than unleaded petrol but now it's gone the other way. Regards, Mark

bye the way fist number on side of nozzle is flow rate as you know and flow rate is tested at 100 psi if pressure going to nozzle is less or greater then that it will increase or decrease flow rate some comercial burners go as high as 300 psi wich meanes want see burn rate on nozzle an lookup 300 psi for true burn rate also higher supply pressures will attomize fuil better

"uBlock Origin" may be the Chrome extension that you didn't mention. Unfortunately, it also affects the operation of some other websites (e.g. Pizza Hut online ordering !), so it may need to be temporarily disabled sometimes.

I would think that once you silver solder the tube to your cap, that would be sufficient to keep the nozzle in a fix position, no? As far as ads, I don't really mind them. I will say this, I don't know why you are letting Google take all the ad money off your hard work. There's no reason NOT to join the partner program and get your share. As far as I know, it doesn't increase the number of ads.

With regards to the advertising and the partner programme, I am just being stubborn. If I do finally give in and sign up I think the best solution would be to donate the income to a charity. The fuel tube will position the burner nozzle once it is silver soldered to the cover plate, I am just adding an extra constraint to be sure that radiant heat doesn't soften the tube and allow it to sag. I have it on good authority that a 3D printed swirl plate was totally unaffected by the heat of the furnace. It seems incredible but maybe the blower velocity keeps the heat out of the burner tube. Just for information, I did a melt today with my Kerosene burner. Melted about a litre of aluminium, and used about 2 litres of fuel. I’m using a central heating burner. No idea how that compares to propane use though!

Kerosene is a bit harder to buy in bulk here. Some places in cooler climates (Melbourne and Adelaide) sell it as home heating fuel but even at $2 per litre, diesel is still probably cheaper than LPG. Regards, Mark

With the guide "fan" to centre the nozzle tip, you only need 4 or 6 points (or blades) so as to keep it small and not cause turbulence. In other words, cut off at least half the blades.

Motors designed to run at fixed DC may work with PWM but you are likely running it in a lower efficiency state which may shorten the life of the motor. You may want to use a pump that is designed to run variable speed. Cheers!

The pump only runs at low speed during the start up phase. Once the heat stabilises, the pump is running at pretty much at full voltage. Given that I only use the foundry about 8 times a year I think it will be OK. However, I am still open to the idea of using an alternate style of pump. This configuration is really a starting point for experimentation. Regards, Mark

Ha! I ran the burner today with some duct tape holding the 3D printed cover plate and it survived. It might be different when it's running in the furnace and there is a lot of radiant heat though. Regards, Mark

I did make a tube bending die for a Hossfeld bender clone. It works fine on thin walled ERW tubing. I have also made cast aluminium accessories for my lathe and milling machine. Having the capability to make castings allows for shapes and forms that would be hard to replicate using fabrication techniques. Regards, Mark

It is a garage and I have to share it with two cars. I recently got into trouble for depositing metal dust on my wife's Subaru Impreza. Of course it is white and the dust showed up as red ferric oxide speckles all over the paint after it rained. I am now on a good behaviour bond and I have to reverse the Subaru out of the garage if I am doing anything like grinding or cutting steel. I don't afford the same luxury to my 13 year old Camry! One day I may do a shop tour but that would mean having to clean it up. I have built a sort of annexe onto the back of the garage which is now my wood shop. The main shed is 9M X 7.5M and the annexe is about 6M X 2.4M. I also have a 20 foot shipping container which is used as overflow storage and a home for my sheet metal guillotine and big horizontal bandsaw. Regards, Mark

i m watching this and from my shop almost burnt down 40x60 ft shop you have that plastic tank too close to your melting pot and you need a steel tank metal when melting can explode im moveing oil out of shop now no gas or Diesel in plastic container so this is my thought

I always run my furnace outside. I have a fire extinguisher handy too. I know that some people in very cold climates may not have that luxury. I wanted to have the fuel tank at least a half a metre from the furnace which is why the service cart has the long flexible air connection. Bottom line though, furnaces are a hazard! Regards, Mark

Rather than controlling the pump to reduce the flow, have you considered running it full speed, but having a return line back to the tank with a restrictor valve?

I did consider that but the PWM controller works perfectly. I can run the pump at idle and it barely pumps anything and it will smoothly increase the flow up to full capacity. I was surprised it worked so well. I built a PWM fuel pump for my jet engine and it wouldn't let the pump idle at all. It would always start at about 30% which was a bit scary when the engine was cold. Usually lots of flames and a red hot tail pipe until it settled down. Regards, Mark

I know! and I had sketched out a nozzle guide vane and turbine disc assembly which would just sit on the lid. The free turbine could power a compressor and you would have a fully functional jet engine or at least a self sustaining gas generator. Regards, Mark

I agree. I cannot bear to watch commercial TV because of the inane and repetitive advertising. I am not sure where you live but we are fortunate to have a publicly funded broadcaster called the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation). It is totally ad free and it is at least watchable. If the plastic tube doesn't work you should get some flexible exhaust tubeing it's extremely flexible and takes extreme heat

I think the PU tube is going to work. Certainly, it doesn't get any heat at all unless it is going to be radiant heat from the outside of the furnace. I do need to make some aluminium collars to stop the spring tearing loose at the ends though. Regards, Mark

It seems that burners made by myfordboy and VintageMachinery (with air from the blower coming in on the angle and all other tubes are straight) are simple as they do not require bending tubes and allow to position those tubes easily. Also, lid lifting 'upside down' mechanism (Olfoundryman) does not require using legs. 👍👍👍👍

I did get the burner running today and with the nozzle guide vane in place to centralise the spray nozzle and the 3D printed cover it all worked as planned. I did consider the other style of burner with a branch for the blower but it's a bit of a mission to cut out the opening for the blower pipe to weld at an acute angle. When I was teaching Graphics we would draw the developments of those branches so they could be cut and formed. If the metal starts out flat it's not too hard but cutting the correct shaped opening in heavy wall pipe means plasma cutting at some intricate angles. Regards, Mark

I did not expect that huge flame when you were testing the atomizer, but it does look like it will work well. The question is, do you know how much fuel will it use? Also, it is good to see the Hossfeld bender back on the bench and being used. I don't use my one much, but it is really handy when you need a nice bend in some tubing. I'm looking forward to Part 3.

Thanks Jon. The nozzle is rated at 2.5 gallons per hour but that is dependent on the pressure of the fuel pump. I doubt that it will use anywhere near that much in my setup. I think the fuel pump is at maximum capacity now but it seems to provide enough fuel to match the capacity of the blower. I sent a viewer to your channel just yesterday. He was looking for a video series on building the Hossfeld clone and I didn't make any videos on that build. My bender doesn't get a lot of use either but for certain jobs it is a real winner. I do want to make up a set of dies for bending light gauge steel square tube though. Regards, Mark

I'm surprise that little pump worked a similar setup is used in heating burners and the fuel pump for heating type burners is usually set around 120 psi

I know! it surprised me too. I guess the spray pattern is "scalable". It won't deliver the same amount of fuel that it is capable of but it is producing sufficient atomisation to burn in a smaller volume. Regards, Mark

Hi Mark, great work. consider having the oil line straight in the blower tube sticking out the end and the air delivery tube merging in a y junction. the air takes the bent path rather than the oil tube. In his way he oil tube can be pulled straight in or out from the leading edge as you wished

I have seen that approach and it is how Perry Merrit made his burner. He had used car exhaust pipe which is thin enough to cut easily. The tube stock I am using has a 5mm wall thickness so it was going to be a mission to cut the opening to make the branch. If I had a tube notcher it would have been a piece of cake but sadly I don't own one. As it has turned out the fuel line assembly has turned out to be fairly easy. I have already run the burner inside the furnace and so far it is looking like a success. I'll put some pictures on my Instagram account. Regards, Mark

If the vanes cause too much restriction around the nozzle I would just put three legs on it. But I bet stainless sheet will work just fine.

I made up a stainless steel guide vane today. It is 0.8mm thick and the vanes are twisted to about 60 degrees. I lit the burner on the bench and it seems to still have sufficient air flow. I'll be able to do some more tests tomorrow. Regards, Mark

Hi Preso, excellent video and series so far. The fuel pump works fine stationary but when there's forced air coming through and you get the 'venturi effect' I think thats when the pump will have trouble supplying enough flow rate. I did light up the burner today but it was just running on the bench. The flame is stable but there is a lot of smoke. I think that once it is operating inside the hot furnace I will get better combustion. It would be nice to have some extra capacity in the fuel pump but that's something that will be easy to upgrade. Surely you only need three points of contact to hold the nozzle in the centre and they only need be round pins which would not restrict airflow.
