Working on the Motor, Pulleys and Guard for Our HEAVY DUTY Tool Post Grinder! | Part 3

Get ready for another exciting instalment of our DIY tool post grinder build! In this episode, we dive into the motor mounting process, using our milling machine to drill and tap the base for a secure fit. We also machine up a custom spacer to ensure a snug mount on the lathe's top slide. Then watch as we craft the pulley system, complete with precision reaming and broaching of keyways, setting the stage for efficient power transmission. To ensure safety, we also fabricate a protective guard from sheet metal and securely bolt it in place. With the motor mounted and the pulley system complete, our tool post grinder is taking shape. In the next episode we'll tackle the VFD connection and conduct our first test run. Stay tuned to see this project come to life!

This is the most HD Toolpost grinder I’ve ever seen made by a machinist. Kurtis is so good at pretty much everything. He makes quite a few of his own tools and they’ve always turned out great. As a home machinist dabbler I always learn something new. The posters here are very respectful. This is something I miss very much. One of my vehicles has Sirius and I only listen to the Classic Radio channel. It has many of the classics from the 40’s and 50’s. I miss the way they were so respectful, mature, so self assured and so optimistic for the future. Listening to those old programs is like therapy to me. There is something in their voices that is as clearly different as a Deep South drawl. It is an accent that we no longer have. I know I’m getting old and I guess I’m sounding old too.

I needed to make a toolpost grinder when I was younger and was working for John Martz Luger Carbine maker. I used a Precise high speed air powered and fluid cooled grinding head which worked exceedingly well. I was manufacturing sling swivels for John Martz' Luger Carbines and needed to grind the wood screw thread so, I could use them in the hard English Walnut forends and rear stocks. I must say that I was able to grind very accurate and highly polished wood threads into the sling swivels. I also had to make the mechanical device to grind a curved section at the tip and grind a slight taper on the shaft. I then finished them in a fine satin rust blue and occasionally I see these on the Internet. I think that I get better results grinding when the grinder is spinning up around 60,000 rpm and I use Silicon Carbide wheels.

Love your work! Old tooler tip, ALWAYS ring your grinding wheel before mounting. Tap the wheel, listen for ring, means it's in one piece and won't explode on startup.

I ran a cylinder surface grinder. A person has to take very light passes because if you went too hard the cup would overheat ang explode. Lots of fun. Had a foreman who thought things were going too slowly and decided to push it. I told him what was going to happen but he was a freshly graduated Chemical Engineer and was smarter than everyone else.

Just because I am dumb, I never understood how a broach worked. Did not realize that they are tapered and do not fully cut the keyway until it goes all the way thru and you put the spacer in. Keep up the good work you guys, another awesome video.

I really like how you made the guard for the belts, very simple yet effective way to make the curved parts. 100% will steal the design in the future. Also how ridiculous does that 300-400A MIG gun look welding 1.5mm sheet steel lol

Looks awesome. A couple of comments. I think the pulley ratio should be okay. Assuming an approximate 1450rpm no load speed, through a 1:3 pulley ratio, gives you a pretty solid 4000rpm once the pulley load is accounted for. That's well above most bench and surface grinders. With a decent vfd you should be able to easily get that upto 12,000rpm which is into angle grinder territory. Secondly, v-belts should be fine. Timing belts are really only necessary when you need absolute translation from input to output, but for this application it doesn't really matter if a belt slips, and in fact that might even be preferable under some circumstances. I've no doubt if you open the mill, lathe, or any other machine tool, that v-belts are used to transfer power from the motor to the spindle, so it's not like we're in unfamiliar territory. If anything, I'd maybe switch to three slightly smaller belts instead of the two thicker ones, but that's about it. Just my 2p
