Follow us on Instagram! / donegaloverlanding Genuine Planar 2kW diesel heater installed in a B&W International Outdoor Case Type 6800.
You can apply this install to any time of diesel heater though from any brand or power output. The principle is the same.
We wanted to install it in a case because we can move it from our Land Rover to our boat when we are using it. They also sell Marine specific models which you can find on their website in the links below. The heaters are very useful as they can be used anywhere. It will be very useful to warm up the garage come winter time. Many people use these heaters on their narrow boats, in camper vans, anywhere they need safe and efficient heating.
After witnessing so many problems and potentially lethal failures, we decided against purchasing a cheap Chinese diesel heater and instead opted for a Planar 2D-12 2kW heater. Its fully CE certified and comes with a full warranty.
With many cases to choose from, we decided to use the Type 6800 from B& W International as it is extremely durable and should last a lifetime.
You can buy the heater from Planar at the website linked below. They are fantastic to deal with and shipping time took about 7 days. They also stock the full range of accessories and have excellent backup should the need arise. Do not buy from planarheaters in the UK.

The case we got from B&W International in Germany. They have many different cases all of which can be found at the link below.

We are delighted with the heater and its performance in the case. We will be demonstrating it at our upcoming events so feel free to ask any questions.

I have to say, I'm so impressed with the professionalism that you installed the heater into the case. Amazing job, really well done. Also for your tip at the end, that's the second time that I have heard it, so it's obviously very important to keep the heater running sweet.

Thanks Rew. The advice about running them on full power is direct from the technical department at Planar in Russia. I told them I was going to make an install video and I asked them if there was any message or information that I could share with people watching the video that would help them. They said that the vast majority of problems people face are due to not turning them up after use, or not using them for months at a time during warmer months. They were excited that I was going to put this message in because they know it will reduce the amount of calls they will get. Perhaps it should be clearer in the instructions that you need to do this step.

Good video, I like how you thought it out. I took a chance with one of the Chinese units. Just like yours, easy to assemble and has worked flawlessly for 2 Canadian winters. I also take it as a tent heater in the fall. No complaints whatsoever. Every week or so I turn it up to max to keep the burn chamber clean.

Planer heaters are assembled in Russia, check inside the case near exhaust on casting... made in China as are the electrics and silencer....how do I know...I've serviced loads and they are all chinese. The box you are using... made in China. Most of the systems in your land rover.....made in China. I think it's how you look after the gear is what makes things last. You are very precise on you build and it's done very well hence it will last a long time. Good build.

Personally I would buy some insulating foil tape for that tank and perhaps some heatwrap for the muffler. Just peace of mind, plus by having the muffler wrapped you ensure better exhaust flow and keep internal temperatures that much lower, which helps slow plastic degradation on things like wires and your case. It's the little safety things afterall.

@@welcometoreality3450 Another Wild idea: let the Cold air intakte go through a compartment sourrounding the muffler and tailpipe inside the box. That Will remove All heat as even with wrapping, the exhaust still reaches 200F. This Also saves a small amount of fuel.

Thanks, I had actually considered this but then decided I would rather have fresh air coming in. Despite this, it is truly incredible how efficient these heaters are. I use green diesel here in Ireland, its the same as red diesel in the UK, its designed for "off road" or agricultural/marine use. Its around 80cents per litre. Its sold in almost every filling station at the pumps in Ireland. The looks I get as I have my Land Rover parked next to it, people assume I'm brazenly filling the Land Rover with it! :D

Yes, the diesel heaters really are efficient. Sometimes I do use mine with a fresh air intake too and this is handy for creating a positive pressure in the roof tent, which keeps the midges out.

Good job, gentlemen, very interesting solution. I've seen folks install an on-demand water heater in outdoor cases, but never a diesel air heater. Nicely done, mates! I'm getting the US version of the heater you're using, the Espar, to install in my diesel van for cool weather and winter camping. It's used widely here in cargo vans, expediter vehicles, and big trucks. Thanks for posting this at OLB, too!

Thanks Road. There are Eberspacher, Webasto and a plethora of Chinese copies on the market. The Chinese ones are like a lottery so there was no chance I was going to risk it. The Planar was less expensive than the Eberspacher and Webasto and just as high quality, so it was a no brainer. These kinds of heaters would be found in trucks, emergency service vehicles and campers all over the place.

Yes, the Eberspacher (Espar) are the most popular and dependable here in the states and widely favored over the Webasto. I hadn't heard of the Planar 'til now, but it looks identical to the Espar units in shape, installation, and muffler, etc. Good luck with yours, and keep the great vids coming!

I put a cheap chinese heater in my electric tuk tuk and it has been working good so far, I drove it last night to the store and back home in -1 Celcius with a little snow on the ground. For what I paid for it I say it was very good deal for what I use it for anyway. Interesting with the outside housing/casing but it will make it easier for someone to steal it or mess with it though compared if it is locked inside my Tuk tuk.

I have been looking for something like these heaters . for my offgrid house. It's not a tiny house but still kinda small. And I do not use much heat . I'm guessing two would run me out of the place. I can use wood for the really cold times! I guess 15amps at 12 volts will be enough. Wouldnt it be cool if they generated their own power! That would be awesome! Something like a model turbine engine and a small generator. Use the heat from the turbine.. Great video..

With all that cheap junk the concern is having no clue what you're going to get. One might work perfectly for 10 years and the next may die on day 5, you just have no idea about those Chinese knockoffs. That doesn't just go for diesel heaters either btw, it goes for pretty much everything. If anything breaks that can also cause a real issue since Chinese "companies" don't tend to be big on customer support or replacing stuff. You likely can't get it fixed locally either as no one really has a clue about what it is or who made it. I'd personally never trust cheap Chinese stuff when it comes to things like a diesel heater since it can potentially cause massive amounts of damage so it just isn't worth it to me. If it was a cheap Chinese action camera or whatever the potential damage caused would be minimal so that might be worth it. Are those Chinese ones even approved? In case your entire van burns down is it covered by the insurance?

Gnawer Shreth, your statement is filled with baseless fear, conjecture and hyperbole. Any competent mechanic with critical thinking skills can install or repair of these Chinese knockoffs. They come from the same Chinese factories that manufacture the European and Russian designed one’s. Don’t fool yourself, they’re all made in China, final assembly ‘might’ be done in Europe somewhere to claim “European built” status but everything is cast or produced in Asia.

You can have it 3m long no problem at all. You will lose a bit of heat through the pipe of course, but these heaters are so hot it wont matter. @DonegalOverlanding
@DonegalOverlanding 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Christopher. We spoke with the Planar technical support team about being able to put the fuel tank in there with the muffler inside the case. They said it would be no problem at all. The reason for putting it inside is simple, its easy to move it around and store it with everything protected inside the case. With the fuel tank on the outside it is highly likely to be damaged. Not everyone goes off-road, but we do all the time and it can be very rough. The side of the fuel tank is only very slightly warm to touch after hours on full heat, so there is absolutely no chance that it would melt or cause any problems.

No doubt that some exceptional products are made in China. To confirm what we already said in previous replies, we have no issue with Chinese products in general. I watched your video with interest, as I'm thinking about getting a Chinese heater for my RV. I have a Dometic TEC30D onboard generator, made in Germany, sporting a range of genuine safety accreditation marks. I could've bought a decent secondhand motorhome for what it cost me. The core product is an excellent piece of technology, very well engineered. But the ancillaries are the cheapest, nastiest bunch of components you could hope never to see on anything you'd pay for! I've spent a year replacing exhaust and fuel components as they failed in turn. At one point it even asphyxiated itself on it's own exhaust leak and needed a new air filter to give it the kiss of life. Fortunately I have an American RV and installed it in a basement locker opposite the original twin cylinder beast and there were no low ventilation intakes anywhere near it, as I'd imagine that could've easily been fatal.

Hi Bob, thanks for the kind words. We are not sure of the amp draw as we never measured it. Our vehicle is in tue garage being turned into an overland camper so we do not have access to test it. The specs will be online though for it. It doesnt use much when running, it uses a bit more at startup whennits using the glowplugs. So we stopped using the automatic thermostatically controlled mode where it tirned on and off to regulate temperature, and just have it running the entire time on whatever power setting matched the conditions. That way it uses very little power.

If I were to copy your project but use the cheap Chinese 5 kw heater, do you reckon I would be in much danger if it went wrong since it’s an isolated box outside the vehicle? Some of the cheap Chinese ones that you decided to pass on for the risks cost only about 100 bucks. I do not think that you should not go for a Chinese heater if its the limit of your budget. It was only a personal choice to go for better quality, the main reason being that throughout our lives pretty much anywhere we went cheap meant we had to buy a quality version later. Having a Chinese $100 heater that works is vastly better than having no heater because a Planar/Eberspacher/Webasto is too expensive and you don't have one. So Id say give it a go and see how you get on. If you do, post back and let us know how you get on. This video has the most amount of thumbs down of all our videos, and thats mostly because people who bought the Chinese heaters did not like our criticism of them. That's fair enough, everyone has an opinion. If it works for you, that is all that matters.

It would have been better to cut off the exhaust exit fitting so the pipe was a straight on connection and also install lower it. Pushing the exhaust up hill is a very bad idea. The pipe and muffler will fill up with condensate. Other than being knowledgeable enough to understand that there is nothing wrong with 99% of the Chinese heaters, this was a good video. First thing to note, do not be rude. Your snide remark at the end was not necessary. Second thing to note, if you are going to criticise something, get your facts accurate. The exhaust is not being pushed up hill, it is in fact going down hill. We are fully aware of condensate and as the exhaust is going down, and also because the length is very small, there is no condensate. As mentioned multiple times, this was built having consulted with Planar and we discussed condensate with them and they said it would not happen with this design, and they are correct, because its been used for over 20 months without any.

These heaters are so efficient and the diesel so cheap (About 80c for green/red agricultural diesel) that I am not bothered about heating fresh cold air every time. With a tent/camper setup you DO NOT want re-circulated air, that is the primary cause of excessive condensation and people need to stop telling people to re-circulate air in their heating setups unless you want to be toweling down your tent/camper every morning. Yes you end up with warmer air for less cost but you also end up with excessive condensation/mould growth...you want fresh air being circulated in.

The cold air intake that will be heated to provide hot air, is actually slightly downwards, though there is absolutely no reason why it could not horizontal. The unit sucks in the cold air, it would not make any difference what way the pipe was, especially when its only about 15cm long.

If you are asking about the combustion air intake, then yes, downwards is the ideal option, but we wanted to have the filter in place, so we put it up high. The most important part of doing it this way, is to ensure there is not a sharp bend in the pipe, which we have avoided easily, and that you drill a small hole at the lowest part of the pipe of about 3mm in diameter.

There is another vent that we didn't put in when we made the video. Its exactly the same as the one you see covering the cold air intake. The hole saw we used in the video was one of those cheap and nasty things and it was difficult to use without making a mess of the case as it kept flexing. So later once we got ourselves a solid hole saw of the correct diameter, we made another hole and fitted the additional vent. If I'm not mistaken, you've fit the fuel tank and the heater within those 11.6 inches in your build. How much space is there between your fuel tank and the heater? The case I'm thinking of using is only 9.2 inches deep and I wonder if that's enough space?
@DonegalOverlanding
@DonegalOverlanding 6 жыл бұрын
The heater is about 15mm clear from the back of the case. The fuel tank is intentionally in position so that it comes up flush with the closed lid. Two reasons for that, one is so that there is as much space between the tank and the heater, the second is so that it sticks out when the case is open meaning its very easy to fill the fuel tank up. The space between the tank and the heater is exactly 40mm. I just put shoes on, found the measuring tape and then went out through the rain into the garage to measure that for you, so hit us up with a sub if you have not already! :D

Haha... many thanks. My case will be too tight to position things the way you did, but I think I've figured it out. I'm probably going to rotate my case 90º and then have the heater at the top and, since my case is so long, I'll probably be able to use the 13 L fuel tank at the bottom. The interior dimensions of the used Pelican 1670 case I picked up are 28.10 x 16.49" x 9.19". I figure that the heater needs about 15" space to account for the minimum spacing required in front and behind it, so the 16.5' width of the case should be good.

The 13 L fuel tank is about 18.5" high and with the required clearances on top and bottom, the heater will take about 8" at the top of the case. So, I should have plenty of room to spare.

Do these heaters create condensation like propane heaters? We have a condensation problem and we want dry heat
@DonegalOverlanding

Hi Matt, hopefully I can help explain this. They do not create condensation the same way propane heaters do as this just blows hot dry air into the tent. However, if you have a single skin tent, like we have on our roof tent, then the temperature difference between the canvas on the inside and the outside will be huge and that will cause condensation from your breath. Tomorrow Im about to install an anti-condensation mat which hopefully will solve the problem. I'm creating a video review of that so if you sub to the channel you can see that too.

It truly is a game changer. We hads tried many solutions, electric blankets, hot water bottles, high rated sleeping bags, but none of it compares to going to bed and the whole tent is hot. Just make sure you leave the doors open a bit to allow moisture to escape. Because of the massively increased temperature differential between the inside of the canvas against the outside, it makes condensation a real problem if you dont allow good airflow.

Of course a Peltier device could be used to get energy from the exhaust. But not much energy could be extracted because of the poor efficiency of Peltier devices. Better to extract any heat from the exhaust further from the heater and use the heat for water or even use another heat exchanger to heat air.

Not a Rolex. On a Rolex Daytona the subdials at 3 and 9 are slightly above the center of the dial. If you draw a line from 3 to 9 on his watch, the line would go directly through the center of the subdials. But it's still a nice-looking watch.

Yes, but not nearly to the same standards. European brands get approved, they need to live up to certain standards, they need to be tested, they come with a warranty that the company *has* to live up to etc. Chinese junk off Ebay is at times no better than if your friend had made it at home in his garage out of the cheapest parts he could find. You have no way of knowing if it's even safe or tested. The problem is the lack of testing, safety, consistency and reliability with the cheap Chinese stuff. You have no idea what you're getting. You could be one of the success stories where it works fine for 10 years, or you could be one of those stories where it stopped working after a single camping trip. Even when a European company gets their stuff produced in China, it still has to go through the same testing, meet the same standards etc. I wouldn't get a cheap Chinese diesel heater, water boiler or any potentially dangerous product, I wouldn't mind getting a cheap Chinese action camera, microphone or whatever though as them potentially failing wouldn't be a safety concern.

MrPlasma01 it comes with the silencer. I had to buy that external filter you can see on top of the box. The shop in the link sold me all the parts. Im not s7re what the price was but I think around 20-25 or thereabouts.

I don´t like the fuel tank inside the box because it´s a fire hazard if something does wrong...also use a CO warning device in the tent in case it sucks in the exhaust... these things spill out a huge amount of CO
@DonegalOverlanding
@DonegalOverlanding 5 жыл бұрын
I feel you are wrong on that. I spoke with the technical department at Planar regarding each element of this design. The fuel is diesel, its not explosive in the same way as petrol. I do have a CO alarm in the tent. Wouldnt take a chance with that.
@bobl78
@bobl78 5 жыл бұрын
that is true but let´s asume a fire starts within the heater for whatever reason due to a malfunction, it´s not so good to have 5 liters of diesel on top of it.. of course it will not explode in a big fireball but 5 liters of diesel will burn at some stage
@DonegalOverlanding
@DonegalOverlanding 5 жыл бұрын
@@bobl78 yeah I suppose that is true. I am not sure that it is very likely that a fire would start in the heater though. Of course anything is possible, but its extremely unlikely. The advantages of having the tank in there, nice and safe from damage is more important to me than the tiny chance a fire breaks out. You have to take into account this is used in a modified 4x4, everything inside gets bumped about a lot and having the tank mounted externally would expose it to damage.
