As we enter our second winter running a Chinese diesel heater in our Four Wheel Camper truck camper we share our experience.
This video is not an installation or technical video. It's us sharing our first hand experiences in the move away from propane heating to diesel heating.
A decision we don't think we'll ever regret.
The conversion to diesel heating has us winter camping in absolute cozy comfort.
Join us as we travel the world overland, exploring the cultures and traditions of all the countries we visit.
In our Land Rover Defender camper which is our full time home we will take you rock climbing, hiking and exploring across all the continents on this planet.
If you enjoy our videos and if you would like to support our work, we have a PATREON account.

Since your on diesel no doubt the type of unit you have is the way to go. At that cost it's almost disposable. From a safety stand point, I went with Espar since I'm on petrol. It works so well! It was right at freezing a few days ago and warmed the whole van up to comfortable in 15 minutes. At 20 minutes it was time to roll down a window! Thanks for the condensation tip. I haven't seen that issue yet but I can just leave the roof vent and a window cracked if needed.

I'll be putting one in my camper, so it's wonderful to see this review. Here in North America, many semi-trucks and farm equipment that works in winter have these type of diesel heaters installed in their cabs and their bunks. Also, the spendy makes (Webasto, Espar) also have models that run on gasoline.

Gday Leigh, nice Short vid. As said already : for me, Eberspächer or Webasto all the way! Installed airheater first time in 1982 in my Bulli ! The last Webasto’s waterheater units we installed 2 and 3 years ago in machines in high altitude applications (4500+mtr.) to pre heat big Diesel engines pre start. Work flawless since, no complain... Good luck with the ccs. Cheers and safe travel

Many comment about the difference between the Chinese heater and the Eberspächer, well here’s my take on that. Quality and support is the difference, all the Chinese heaters are a copy of the Eberspächer with a few corners cut, they can’t be mounted under a vehical as the electrics are not sealed, soft ware is not capable of controlling the heater over all temp settings ie choked up if run on low heat too long. Some of the many Eberspächer I fitted over the last 35 years are still working, even some parts are still available, the heater on my VW camper is mounted underneath 21 years old, serviced it last year for the first time Eber says 10 yrs, in perfect condition, replaced the glow plug & burner gauze as a precaution, yes they are expansive and parts also, I know which I trust when out in deep winter.

Hi Leigh, we are running (an expensive German) diesel air heating system in our Unimog now since 14 years. The system is indeed great, eventhough warm water diesel heating systems might be even more comfortable. But they are much more complicated and heavier. The Chinese air heaters look veeeeery similar to the one we have installed. Heaving lived and worked for 13 years in China, I anticipate, that the quality might not be the best - but they will work for a decent time anyway. Best regards from Germany, Jürgen

Funny that I was recently researching these kinds of heaters for an upcoming build and then you post this video. I would like to add that at least one of the ‘well-known brands’ does offer a model that runs on unleaded. I could be wrong, but I do believe some of the Chinese copies have this option as well. With some research and planning, there wouldn’t be any need to continually buy two different fuels. As always, love the videos and look forward to the next one.

My only suggestion (and it's pretty minor) would be to tie the heater exhaust into your truck exhaust. That way there's only one place for exhaust to exit the vehicle and should help ensure carbon monoxide exits away from your living space. Just a thought

If you're looking to buy a Diesel heater, install it like this. Circulating bad/used air is not a good idea, and I dont understand why people do it. Imagine having the air intake to your house in your kitchen, and the exhaust everywhere else, it'd smell bad. Only difference here is that the bad/used air doesnt smell, it's just not healthy. Two people need about 14l/s (Liters per second) for healthy ventilation in a bedroom, a bit more in a camper. A dieselheater blows at about 45-55CFM(dont quote me on this) which is roughly 20-25l/s. The way Leigh and Stephanie installed it, ensures that they always gets the correct air circulation to stay healthy. A fan would be great to have in summer times to ensure enought fresh air exchange since the natural heat/cold draft doesn't work very good in summer time.

Could you not utilise a HVAC mixer valve like a car uses? Then you could have some air changes whilst having a bit better efficiency because you will reuse some of the heated air? If you had a vent in the floor or somewhere else then the pressurised air will exit the cabin passively. Obviously hot humid air will be at the top but the heater can be used to to mix it all together and ensure the humidity/moisture exits wherever you place your grille.
