Royal Enfield Taurus 325 cc 1980-2001 .The only diesel motorcycle to enter mass production, with a 325 cc 6.5 bhp Lombardini diesel engine, and 3.5 hp version, the gearbox was reinforced to withstand increased torque associated with a diesel engine. The Taurus came with heavy-duty luggage rack for vending jobs and economy up to 72 kmpl,but the top speed was limited to roughly 80 km/h by its lack of power.

Several Diesel Enfields versions exist,far more than 3.... Pretty easy to do because it had a split gearbox,unlike modern bikes. Would love one for a giggle😍

my friend's dad had a diesel motorcycle ,,, i remember its engine had a radiator or a turbocharger like machine . he used to commute daily to the airbase . that was second diesel motorcycle i ever saw.

??? you got a lot of diesel bikes on there..... with no indication to folk that show which ones were actually in production for any amount of time. They are the Two Royal Enfield models and the Track bike. You could clump the Enfield's into one, then the Track and sorta claim the HDT military diesel as being in production as a third one.

Anybody got an old pre unit Enfield sitting around? Harbor Freight used to sell a nifty little pull start diesel. I do a LOT of driving on gravel roads. I would put knobbies on it and drive it to work. You could run that thing on french fry oil.

The sound really depends upon what silencer you fit. Most diesels are fitted with straight through exhausts with no sound deadening material or baffles. A diesel with a decent silencer is no louder than a petrol. Only the combustion crack gives them away, & that's mostly evident only because of the open exhaust. As for speed, well yes, the rate of progress is 'modest', - a 400 cc diesel generates 8.5 bhp, or 8 at the back wheel. So 45 mph cruising & a top speed of 52 is about right. But you can easily achieve 180 mpg, which is really the point of doing it. An Enfield Bullet with a 412cc Fuji Robin diesel is in the Guinness book for setting an economy record by travelling around the entire coastal road of the UK. To comply, they had to achieve an average speed of 40 mph in 48 hours over 1900 miles, & averaged 199 mpg over that distance using a team of riders. That record has never been equalled. To attain an average mpg of 199, meant that they must have got well over 220 mpg for long periods.

To keep bike weight down, they make the diesel engine cases of aluminum, but aluminum diesel engines are noisy even without the exhaust... And, yes, need a turbo diesel to be appealing... N/A diesels get best MPG at 1,000 RPMs... Turbo diesels get best MPG at 2500 - 3500 RPMs... plus more HP...

After calculating ,the Royal Enfield gets about 130 MPG , but that easy to achieve w a single cylinder diesel engine that only revs to 3600 rpm. Anyone know what its top speed is ?

Nope, but 5.6 HP!! and about 180 - 200 kg of bike and add rider. I read that the petrol 350s got 18h.p.at crank and 12 at the wheel. Flat chat they could reach over 60 mph.

Yeah, they're not fast, they make a hideous noise, and diesel costs more than regular gas. Yet, in the event of a major collapse, if you're brewing your own fuel they may well be the bikes of the future.

Hardly a tractor engine! More generator / water pump or rotavator. 200 mpg is the reason. I sold my Hayabusa to get a diesel Enfield Bullet, & have never regretted it for a second. Had it 7 years now & would never part with it. Sure, these things are an acquired taste that wouldn't suit everyone, - but that applies to every other type of bike on the planet.

If you're gonna drive with constant braking and accelerating, then sure you will have braking problems; you're gonna wear out the pads faster than your petrol tank getting over. BTW, I've ridden over 100,000 kms and changed my pads only twice
