jennifur sun it was actually based off an experience my mom and dad had in their way back to Tennessee from California. My Mom told Jim about the experience and it gave him the idea for this song.

This happens far too often unfortunately. Almost 8 years ago a goofy woman drove out in front me in a mini-van and I was in a loaded coal truck. I was only 50-60 yards away when she jumped out in the road. I was getting ready to slam her van and saw two kids probably from 8-10 in age in the back. I took the woods. Totaled the truck, slung coal every where and ended up having to be cut out of the cab. For my efforts I ended up with a severe concussion, broken left collar bone, broken right wrist,4 cracked ribs and over 50 stitches in several cuts to my face and head. What a day.

+Donald TittleJr Never cut off a truck. Ever. When I see that I see red. They can't stop on a dime and I am so sorry to hear you were injured. Let a truck in... as soon as he can he will be back out of your way! Further if you are stuck in bad weather follow a trucker they know the road like the back of their hand. Kudos to you for your choice of path.

Kathy Fisher I appreciate the kind words. I guess it all goes back to they way I was raised. I was brought up to believe that to give your life to save another/others is what you're supposed to do. I've never known any other way of thinking. I credit my parents (even though they divorced when I was 6 both still remained fully involved my life) but also my maternal grandmother (1910-1991) who told me of my family ancestry. Irish,Scots-Irish,Cherokee and Welsh. To her and her generation as with her parents and their parents generations honor above all else was their way of thinking. My granny always said,"God hates a coward". She didn't say that to instill fear but to show me that standing up for what's right, defending those who can't defend themselves and telling the truth no matter what is the only way to live. Period. I've always tried to remember that. Take care. God bless.

God Bless you too. I have driven across Canada 5 times from Van to Ont and I truly appreciated the truckers on a number of occasions including where to have dinner - you know the best stops! :) (Once through the US also and if I got confused I asked a trucker). :)

I dedicate this song to all those Prius drivers out there. They may be cute and innovative on city streets but get those damn things off the open interstate and they are a disaster. They do not have the power to keep up with 75 mph Wyoming I-80 traffic. Though they are getting better. Still dumb to take a hybrid on a cross country trip though. Buy a nice turbo-diesel if you want to be efficient. We truckers run them for a reason.

@@jennifursun3303 Understandable. Some people are just grumpy jerks who want things their own way. But I have to say that Richard is right. In a truck you will have a dozen people a day, at least, swinging out ahead of you on the interstate going unsafely below the speed limit. You don't notice it too much in a car. But in a less maneuverable truck and the required split-second observation/reasoning/decision/action being a life or death thing, you get a bit peeved. It is legitimately infuriating. I could understand if they were pulling a boat or a camp trailer or something but they aren't. It is just normal cars that have no business being that slow as they merge onto (it is typically merging on, not off) Eisenhower's great interstate superslab. It is, quite frankly, being negligent in a way that could get someone killed. Most likely the truck driver because that's the unspoken part of the job. To yank the wheel off the road and take one for the team if trouble strikes. Sorry for the rant. I just want people to be more mindful. A bit of stepping back and reflection on what they could do better in the future (for all parties) wouldn't hurt either. Anyways, stay safe out there and don't be afraid to mash the skinny pedal when called for. Treat the freeway onramp like a pass on 1/4 mile track in a dragster. Open it up and merge with authority. It is not only the safest way to do it but it's also fun!

Lloyd Green did play steel on this album, and some of the dobro licks in the turn-around remind me of Lloyd's machine-gun fast right hand technique. I believe it is him on this song.

+jennifur sun It seems that I was wrong and it wasn't Lloyd Green on dobro on this session. Here is all the info of the session musicians that I was able to find: Jim McReynolds - tenor vocal/guitar Jesse McReynolds - lead vocal/mandolin Bobby Thompson - 5str dobro Lloyd Green - steel Roy Huskey - bass Buddy Harman - drums Larry Butler - piano Recorded: May/1967, Columbia Recording Studio, Nashville

When this song was recorded the hottest compact available was a Corvair Monza and the industry standard were those old-style truck brakes with the blue button that didn't really do anything and a wigwag (the "kiss your ass goodbye" flag"). Roads were pretty scary way back when.

just saw something that i want to ask truckers about. it was a semi-tanker style truck that went by my sis-in-love and myself up here in the Bay Area. he had spokes of metal sticking out of the hub of the front tires, they looked like the ones they use in Ben Hur on the chariots to stab the horses and trip up the wheels i can't figure out how in Gods name they could be legal to use. Please let me know about this

This is not the hit version. It had a steel guitar where this version has a dobro. This is more than likely from the 1979 session where they recorded it for CHM records at Sound Stage Studio Nashville. In this session no one was playing a steel but Lloyd Green was playing dobro.
