It's 0.55mm of cam lift not 55 degrees - yours was retarded by 0.18mm. Be careful to adjust the rear pump belt timing adjuster THEN readjust the pump belt tensioner (front adjuster) if only minor adjustment is needed. If the pump belt was installed correctly, you have appropriately 4 engine degrees of adjustment either way. If the timing was wrong, you often need to go for a half mile road test to clear the residual fuel causing the smoke on start up. One or more glow plugs not working can also cause light smoke on cold starting without actually affecting starting itself. 😉

Excellent comment thank you so much, always nice to get an expert to explain properly, thank you.. also very helpful information, I’ll have to take it for a drive clear it out, new glow plugs, I think the smoke before was because it was 0.18mm retarded. You can also rotate the engine until you get the reading you want on the pump eg 0.55mm then lock the pump at that, loosen the cam bolt, rotate the engine back to exact TDC and retighten the cam bolt. Easier as it doesn’t require 4 hands trying to fight the spring tensioner in the pump and lock the pump at the same time. Also I find the only way to truly get the timing spot on is with VCDS as your setting the pump as the ECU sees it and that’s what matters. Great video as always!

Yeah I did think about doing that way, but for the video I decided to do it this way, maybe next time I do one I’ll do it the same way you do 👍 I don’t have vcds but if I can find someone with it I’ll hook it up and see what it’s reading, hopefully should be close enough for now. I found when tightening the cam bolt it can move slightly as its a pig to hold still so then fine adjustment made via pulleys

I found that you can adjust with the idler and not the tensioner, and I was able to hold the cam pulley without anything moving didn’t need to use the idler to adjust but I did look and see how much movement on the dti gauge from moving the idler I think about 0.15mm of movement either way(advance or retard)

I've got a 1999 carravelle 2.5tdi auf and it's started knocking on throttle ,smokes out back now with loss of power I'm praying it's pump timing or injectors, great vid 👍

I wanted my timing checked but was told by a garage to leave it alone as it runs OK. They had a 2.5 tdi van timed up to factory settings and it ran worse that it did before.

I also have a OBD2 port reader so I can plug it in, get the van upto temp and then it'll show the degree the pumps running at, I can then make slight adjustments. Most garages dont do this, its more of a specialist job

@@TwiggsT4 My van runs well but it seems to lack power, it will struggle to do 85mph on a flat road. I know when the belt was done it wasn't re timed, he just locked the pullys and swaped the belts. It starts and idles fine though. Where can I get a obd reader from? I have a Bluetooth obd dongle.

Yeah if he just locked the pulleys then the pump timing is going to be well out, sounds like yours could be out by as much as 30/40 degrees. I would say the pump timing definitely needs to be done, personally I prefer to use the dti gauge, every time I’ve used it and timed up the vans with dti I’ve never had to make any fine adjustments. But you can still check if yours needs to be advanced or retarded with the use of a obd. I got the streetwise from euros a few years ago, I then downloaded from the App Store Car Scanner. Took me a little while to figure out how to connect and use it but it was only cheap and has done the job. I have used it on different cars to clear codes and fault find

Hi twiggs just bought an acv 2.5tdi engine off Dan Hammond at stoke he been stripping t4s for 20years now.Dan drove the van home the body was rotten he said cambelt was done just before laid up it was 112000miles only.it was 2019 last mot on gov history.Dan was saying he adjusts timing slightly with vagcom .also the guy who did my cambelt told me that as well he uses laptop vagcom as well .so when you did that cambelt by side of road on that mint van was that just rough setup.?I’ve bought a engine crane new off Chester hobby store near me too.when got to warehouse to collect it was huge crane .it does fold up well the legs do.I’ve just started cleaning engine for now .will need need cambelt before fitting .I may never need this engine as mine still runs strong 312000 mile now.keep up great videos twiggs.steve

No I don’t use vagcom, I set the pump with dti gauge as you can’t set the 55mm pump lift with vagcom, you have to guess pump timing run it up to temperature them check vagcom then make adjustments. If done properly you don’t need vagcom. All the 2.5tdi cambelts I’ve done and set up have always been spot on timing, I have a code reader that when plugged in tells me the pump timing, and all the t4’s I’ve done are 100% set up perfect. The 2.5tdi engines are very straight forward engines to work on, cambelt is straight forward, Haynes manual explains it step by step. Also they are good engines if looked after, so hopefully you’ll never need to swap them over 🤞

I’m in Southampton and it’s over 4 hour drive from mine to yours, I charge £300 for labour, and customer supplies parts, I can supply but I use gates which is over £200 for the kit

Ive not long set my pump to 0.55 with a dti gauge and just changed my injectors and my van pulls really well mines is a lt35 2.5tdi

Hi can you help . I have a vw t4 2.5 tdi acv . I'm trying to locate the fuel pump locking bolt but mine doesn't seem to have one so don't know what to do.

hi twigs i was driving my t4 going great then all of a sudden it started spluttering then massive smoke black out the exhaust i havnt drove for a few months could it be injectors blocked or turbo blown please help

Hi. Very informative video thanks and just signed up to your channel👍 Just had the belts and pump done and my mechanic mentioned the cover missing on the pump side. Can’t seem to source it anywhere so I guess they’re like hens teeth now. Is this item critical in terms of protection or do you guys not bother replacing it. Cheers ant

Hello 👋 thanks for joining the community 👍 I would always recommend replacing that cover if it’s missing, it’s only held on by 2 bolts. I’m sure James at calicampers will have one in stock, no harm in giving him a call.

The cover for the pump, I should of asked which pump, water pump or diesel pump, diesel pump is from the top just below the coolant reservoir, the water pump isn’t as straight forward to get to

Hi Twigg’s, My T4 had a recon engine some years back, the mechanics that installed it, couldn’t get the timing quite right. So I drove a very lumpy engine to a VW specialist who adjusted the timing correctly. Now I’m fitting new belts, I’ve realized that the mechanic’s put their own mark on the diesel pump pulley. Which is not inline with the notch on the pulley or the case and my van has always smoked on start up. How do I attach my DTI, through the bolt hole on the pump ?

Hello, first of all ignore any previous markings from others as you don’t know what they marked it up too, also those marks can move due to tensioners. If the timing has been out for a while it may smoke on start up until it’s had a good run. similar, but the 2.4 has 1.0mm of lift instead on 0.55mm on the 2.5

hello. so i have problem with starting t4 2.5 tdi so i did new berings...and now it wont start,the cluster dosen light up. So engine sturts up but it dosent want to stay runnign without brakecleaner si can it be issue the ground wire somewhere or is it the disel pump wrong timing i set the timing right with camshaft and marks on pump and on block so thats good.Any clue and help maybe?

Yeah my old diesel pump video I say mm coz of pump lift, Chris explained to me on phone, with one of the long informative callls, but then doing wrens, everything said was degrees, coz your computer was saying degrees wrens van was 37 degrees and that just rewired my brain to say degrees instead of mm
