As I'm not a mechanic I did'nt understand any of that, but, YOU know what you're talking about and I appreciate the video and the final resolution. Love the sound of a well sorted diesel engine it's almost like a cat purring, a very soothing sound. So! a man knows what he's talking about and doing. Good job Sir.😁👍

Cheers for another informative and interesting walk through, why do we get the feeling that every "use that free brand new bolt, and don't forget to put that cover back on" comes from the voice of experience having seen something burst into flames 😅

I've just watched a man do the timing belt on a VW while speaking and explaining it perfectly in Swahili. Its not something I could do or would ever do but totally and utterly fascinating. A true master of his craft at work is a joy to see. Keep it up Al. My Sunday viewing is now complete. Bring on whatever is next. Do we get to see Fudgie's birthday party and did he havea cake, balloons and funny hats. 🤷🏼♂️😂

Have a very similar engine in my C4 A6. It’s a tough old thing. 360k now. I’ve done the belts a few times now and it’s a bit of a mission. Not mentioned explicitly is that the crank bolt is TIGHT. 200Nm + 270 degrees. There is a special tool that engages with the crank damper to hold the crank still which makes things a bit easier. The pump timing is also a pain, though mine appears to have a different tensioner arrangement and there is some fine adjustment available on the pump mount bolts. Interesting video

Good timing (no pun intended) with you putting up another Lt video as I'm just about to take my engine out to send off for a recon then put it back in myself. The more jobs I can learn to do on my own Lt the better! Cheers for making such detailed, in depth and knowledgeable videos!

Alright al n fudge hope your good. Love this channel it's just two guys doing their job and enjoying it plain and simple. Al you should put a disclaimer at the start of your videos because there are some Muppets out there who will try things your way and because they're incompetent idiots and mess it up they will try and hold you liable. Just a simple note at the start keeps you safe from the idiots. This and any videos on this channel are information only if you decide to follow anything you see in these videos you do so at your own risk and i accept no liability for damage to you or your vehicle.

in the 80s and 90s cambelt intervals were around 30 thousand miles, some cheaper makes (Dacia/Renault) still are, mostly today they can be as high as 130 thousand miles, if you skimp on the price of a new water pump you are asking for trouble, its not worth the risk. glad you pushed that one home Al.

@@johnmclaughlin1946 If I’m not mistaken the be guys used to buy the Volvo 850 diesel’s & V70 diesel’s to put the engine’s t4’s etc because the Volvo version of that engine was putting out more power than the VW version my 850tdi was 140bhp as standard. great explanation of a belt change my favourite memory of the old 5 pot petrol was the absolutely incredible torque setting on the crank on them where you had to lock the pully on the front engine mount ( got a look at the genuine tool used the outer to a golf front wheel bearing welded a big flat plate with a slight kink and cut a key way out of the bearing it slid in the front pully a treat but god they were mental tight ) happy days looking forward to the next episode have a good sunday

Al, really helpful video, hope people find it useful! The only thing I'd say, is as regards adjusting the pump timing, instead of tightening and loosening the pulley centre bolt to adjust the timing, the guide pulley is offset and can be moved with an allen key, which when used in conjunction with the tensioner, can move the pump timing back and forth a couple of degrees, it's a lot more accurate than fannying about with the cam pulley!

My first car (not that I have a driving licence!!) 20 years ago was a Citroen BX (TGD Meteor Estate) with the non-turbo 1.9L XUD engine, I got the car for free cos the timing belt was snapped, and if I'd had the money to fix it, the thing would have come back to life (and I'd have had fun with the hydraulics, cos Citroen!) as those were non-interference engines, meaning a snapped timing belt isn't the end of the engine... :)
