Hey everyone! I very much hope you enjoy this closer look at my fifth Thomas episode.
I made sure to include ALL the different takes I filmed of the crashes, near misses, and explosions. I hope this video gives a good sense of how I achieved the practical effects and shots in the episode and how many attempts they took to get right.
If you have any questions about a certain shot, set, filming technique, or special effect, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment here (if comments are open), on the unlisted copy of this video, or on my community page! I’d love to answer them!
Stay tuned for the Director’s Commentary in a few weeks! Cheers!

Hey folks! I hope you enjoy this in-depth look at the making of this episode! Just to remind everyone to always be careful with sparklers - they burned both the tracks and Diesel's undercarriage, so be careful where you use them. Always have a wet cloth ready and/or parental supervision. Thank you all again SO, SO much for the amazing response to this episode. Stay tuned for the Director’s Commentary in the coming weeks! I would've used a locomotive that didn't have the motor in it so you could use it as a stunt model like with leokimevideo when he was doing the first episode of mad bomber so that one could have a burnt undercarrige while using the sparklers .
@SootyWill
@SootyWill Жыл бұрын
@@thomassoniccarsfan1220 I agree, a stunt double would definitely have been a less risky plan haha. Thankfully though Diesel wasn't badly burnt. I covered his chassis with numerous layers of tape each take to protect him. But yeah, would not recommend my way of doing it lol

Seeing all these bloopers and different takes of how these scenes were filmed and made reminds me of those S5 rush tapes. Those sparklers sound like they can be very technical and hard to keep track of when doing a shot.

Haha thanks! Yeah those sparklers were... definitely an experience lol. They're pretty unpredictable. The burst of flame at 1:40 that I used in the final episode was NOT meant to happen... but it looked super cool so I used it anyway lol Thanks for watching! @SootyWill
@SootyWill Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Glad to hear that making these Behind The Scenes videos are still worth it. I think the only stunt model I've ever used was the truck in Ep 3, for everything else I just have the one. I did my best to protect Diesel from the sparklers, and he came out (mostly) unscathed! (the tracks not so much lol). For the tankers, I unscrewed them into pieces and lightly put them back together for each explosion, so they're still usable too!

Here's some things in this video you should never try at home with model trains. 👆 The fire effects were absolutely beautiful! At least nothing actually caught fire. 13:59: Suprisicadabra.... 🎩😈 Maybe 1 thing you can do with Diesel's paper faces next time he appears is that you can put a blob of stickytack in front of his nose and lips. But not his eyes and eyebrows theyll just get their paint scratched.

I actually use a children's humidifier! I've connected a plastic tube to the nozzle so the water vapor is pumped out in the right direction. I posted a tweet showing how it works a while ago. If you see the giant Thomas and gray tube in the video, like at 8:22, that's what it is! twitter.com/SootyWill/status/1550593318538645512 I've seen lots of used humidifiers at thrift stores, though I'm sure you could find a new one online for cheap as well. They do have to be cleaned regularly and can make nearby areas moist, but it's a lot cleaner and safer to breath, and you don't have to buy fluid!
