The hybrid is definitely worth it, the economy, the tremendous amount of torque, but one of the bonuses that I love besides the generator is being able to idle for hours on end with the HVAC system running and only starting up every 15 to 20 minutes for about 32 seconds, essentially saving tons of gas if you want to take a nap in your vehicle, or wait at the drive-thru, or see a movie with the AC on, these benefits all put together make it a killer combination, not to mention not having the extra quarts of an oil filter change on a diesel or DEF fluid.

This! Best drivetrain ever! Towing hard every day? No. Get a HD diesel. Commuting and using for utility as a truck with occasional moderate towing? This is the ticket! So refreshing to not have those hard shifts driving uphills unladen like my 6.2 did. That drove me crazy! lol! My power boost is so smooth! Life the ride and the seats of the F150 compared to all my GM’s as well! No def! Idle all you want. Generator onboard. I am a powerboost superfan!

The benefit of hybrid is CITY driving! And the truck serving as a 30amp generator for a trailer or other. Long-distance economy isn't really the point and any "electric miles" require some load on the gas engine to recharge the battery (later).
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 3 жыл бұрын
Well I'd hope that much of the electric mileage could be recuperated by coasting to a stop or down hills. Though I wish Ford would have installed a method of charging the battery up while at home. A simple 110v 20-30amp circuit could still top up the battery in a few hours which I think would be beneficial for many.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 3 жыл бұрын
@Rick yes that’s why I essentially said I wish Ford made that model a plug-in and not a regular hybrid, and implied that electric miles would come from those times when the vehicle is able to regen.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 3 жыл бұрын
@Rick well plug in hybrids exist and show that they can be very beneficial for around town driving. The F-150 hybrid can operate on electricity alone (unlike a prior Civic Hybrid I once had), showing that having the ability to be charged via household outlet could be helpful even if only a little.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 3 жыл бұрын
@Rick my thought was to have the ability on all of the hybrids as standard. There are plugs in the bed to tap into the electrical power for many non-driving uses. Being it’s a portable power bank, makes sense to incorporate a way to charge it like one (heck most of the electrical infrastructure is already onboard). People ran their essentials off those outlets during the Texas ice storm, so if you can top it up when you have power to do so, makes sense in case of emergencies as well.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 3 жыл бұрын
@Rick what do you mean it cost them hundreds of millions? 400 vehicles at 50-65k a pop is like 25-30 million and gets Ford good publicity. Not sure what that has to do with the topic really either.

Steve. Great video. Yes, I would agree with you. Having a portable generator is a BIG plus especially when the power goes out or when I had to plus in my tools either working in the driveway or away from the house. When you consider what you have to do to lug around another 7.2 K generator, well it's a no brainer. This is just a great option for many....who can afford it.

Love my hybrid, had it about a yr and half , raised it 2.5 “ on front and 1” rear added 33/10.50s I average 10-12 towing my Polaris ranger although a majority of the time I’m running around 75 mph . And about 18 w/o towing. When my wife drives it she gets over 20 mpg . I did lose several mpg from the lift and tires . Before we had power on our land we ran our rv off of the truck ( smaller generator ) for about 3 days without a problem. There amazing trucks especially with the torque it’s hard to keep my foot out of it . Definitely will buy another one in the near future.

Still surprised how stark the difference is between unloaded driving and towing. Both the speeds run were very reasonable, so I was hoping to see something nearer to 20mpg towing with that relatively light trailer. My car hauler setup weighs about the same, and though likely a touch more aerodynamic, I still get 16-17mpg towing it with my Coyote going around 65-70mph.

Thanks for the video!!!! Hats off to Ford for providing us trucks with hybrid electric in a more advanced package then Chevy did years ago with the 6.0. I have the gm 3.0 diesel and would consider changing over when the tech can be bought at a lower price point and they integrate plug in for battery charging and tax credit. However if my primary use was highway and or towing I wouldn't consider this as competitive as my experience with EcoBoost engines are that they are incredibly powerful but not fuel efficient under loads. The 5.0 got much better Laden mpgs than the 3.5 under load. Need a hybrid in the F150 with HDPP!!!

So for the braking, if you have it in tow haul mode, it should keep the engine on and should use a combo of regen braking and engine breaking to slow down. All that happens is the regen braking stacks with the engine braking. There's no way that a 5500lb truck and a 4500lb trailer are being stopped or overheating and overcharging issues. Remember it can't regen past the battery's capacity. Personally I'd rather see a phev with a much bigger battery which would handle regen much better in terms of heat and capacity. As for fuel economy, it's really to boost city miles, highway mpg was never that much better with a hybrid. There's a reason most hybrids and ev's have better fuel economy in city than the highway.

@@Beniamin6665 that's why I would prefer a phev truck. Phev vehicles have about 5-7 times the battery capacity, which means it not only can give you more regen, but also longer sustained battery power since it could technically drive like 20 miles on its own in ev only. So you have a 5 mile mountain to tow up? A phev will hold charge up the whole mountain, then provide more regen coming back down.

if you want better reliability, get the V8, heck even the ecoboost. Diesels with modern emissions systems are worse than any hybrids. The hybrid stuff has 20,000 more miles warranty than diesel stuff, so there's that? Also, the battery pack for the F150 is $3,000, the particulate filter in your diesel costs $2,000. Battery technology is advancing fast, and prices are also dropping pretty noticeably, but your diesel filter won't drop in price, I can only see the rare materials in it getting more expensive as time goes on. Do a delete on your diesel, then you got a winning truck.

Yes,however this motor can only recover energy going down a hill assuming it has somewhere to store it. Since this Ford F-150 only has a very small 1.5 kW•h battery it cannot recover much in the way of energy before the batter is full and the motor can no longer act like a drag. It really needs a bigger battery to be able to do it down large grades. You could change about 200m in elevation on full Regen with a dead battery and have a full battery at the bottom. This number shrinks greatly when the truck is towing.

This is a great "bridge" for this gap of a push from Petro to electric powered vehicles. This technology should be on the forefront of mainstream media not the "plug-in" vehicles. The infurstructure is not in place for all electric vehicles. This is the best option and we need more of this kind of technology on all makes and models. People also need to be edjucated on what vehicle is best for their lifestyle. If you commute on a freeway for 2hrs total a day for work you should be aware that the hybrid might not get the best mpg. If you commute a half hour on back roads in between towns, the hybrid my benefit you more. The catch 22 for a highway commute maybe that you have a high likelyhood of stop and go traffic. The hybrid would help in low speed and stop and go. This vehicle here is not only bridging the gap from gas to electric but for someone who needs a truck on a weekend for towing and hauling. Yes it can do it for the little towing and hauling a weekend worrior does. I have to say though Ford is not going to let you pick how much Regen you can do on the sheer fact that someone would ask this truck do something it is not designed for and potentially do thousands of dollars of damage to the traction motor. Plus if you are aware that the brake pedal is a "simulator" and the computer is judging how to stop you may feel better that all the engineers at Ford have hit it on the head, cuz they always do. If you don't use the hydraulic braking system enough your pads and rotors go to hell in a hand basket quicker than shit. Fusion hybrid the hydraulic brake was just there to hold the vehicle at a stop and emergency braking obviously

With the move towards longer term financing, dealers and manufacturers see it as a reason to raise their prices as well, as it can be financed over a longer term to give the customer lower payments. Seeing as dealers will now finance out to 7 years, I can't wait till they allow 9 or 10; then $65K trucks will seem dirt cheap. This is what lobbyists lobby for, "their piece of the pie" and what politicians are agreeing to..

In the days of high fuel prices I did some simple math. The cost per mile hybrid is 11.7 cents per mile, the diesel is 12.2 cents per mile, normal gas engine is 12.5 cents per mile. as much as I want it there is no diesel advantage anymore. This is assuming my local current pump prices $3.57 for gas and $4.57 for diesel. not to mention the added cost of def, more expensive oil changes, fuel filters etc. so 500 more in fuel cost over 100,000 miles for the diesel? no thanks.

@JuanMartinez-gu8sh
@JuanMartinez-gu8sh 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t require super. I’ve tested both and you do get a marginal increase in mpg so not worth the extra cost in my opinion. A modest increase in HP also but again, you won’t feel it seat of the pants. Maybe in some back to back 0-60 runs or drag races but that’s not the objective of this vehicle. I almost always drive in Eco mode and as gently as I can but I won’t say I hypermile. My way to work is 75% highway and lots of stop and go for the rest. I’ll run 75-85mph almost all the time on the highway but pretty much speed limits on the city streets (35-50) and my documented average is 22.8mpg at this time. Mid summer I was over 23 but winter fuel blend has lowered the efficiency some. FYI, I also calibrated my AFE Bias to get my trip computer to within .2mpg actual at every fill up. I think this is an important point many reviewers miss when testing mpg on various vehicles. Most are off by a significant margin. Usually the factory sends them out of the factory with a default setting, not taking axle ratio, tire size, etc. into account. It’s possible to do this on the F-150. I can explain if desired.

My bet is that this is already part of EV tractor/trailer design. It would be a waste of potential regen and even low level propulsion from the trailer wheels otherwise. By propulsion, I would think it could be used for traction control on slippery/steep/loose surfaces.
