I’ve got a 1981 IH 584 fwa(4wd) and it has a similar, if not the same fuel tank sandwiched between the fenders. They are NOTORIOUS for not only leaking where they bolt-in but rusting inside and just crudding(is that a word?) up the fuel system. It might be worth it for you to pull the tank and having it hot tanked and coated my your local radiator/tank shop. I had mine done because it had swiss cheese ends, but with not having to ever worry about it rusting out & leaking again, I also NEVER have to worry about having rust/sediment clog things up! Mine doesn’t have a lift pump on it though, just gravity fed through the filters/separator to the injection pump. Btw, it cost me $375 to have my tank done and that came with a lifetime warranty.

I bought an old 784 about 12yrs ago and previous owner has a piece of pipe inside the tank up a couple of inches from the bottom so its not sucking in dirt from the bottom. Good idea but i got stranded first year when it ran out of diesel even though there was quite a bit in the bottom of the tank. Now that i know I just never let it get below half way empy.

Quick correction for anybody wondering, the fuel inlet on this injection pump, seems to be a CAV DPA Pump ( i changed one on my MF50R Perkins engine (A4.212) is on the back of the pump. The return line is the line on the side of the injection pump Matt pointed out as the inlet. Just a quick heads up, great video as always. -HP

I’m 73 and have done a lot of what your doing and it’s good to see the young folks figuring stuff out for themselves. Oh and there is no such thing as doing it wrong if when your done it works for you. EXPERTS, Ha! They couldn’t find their ass if it wasn’t so big from sitting on the couch all day.

Having used these tractors most of my life the crud comes from the tank. We drained and cleaned the tank. Installed a cut off valve and an additional filter before the lift pump. The filters you replaced are after the lift pump and would not prevent this from happening again.

Junk in diesel fuel systems can be rust / water / or even anaerobic microbes which make a sludge in the tank. If the filters keep getting clogged, suggest cleaning the entire system. Once it’s clean, they make antibacterial additives for the fuel, which is helpful especially on equipment that is used infrequently….

Hi Matt,you have some kind of magic in you to start that inter without bleeding the injection pump,it looks like a CAV DPA which is made under licence from Roosamaster. The rubber hose from the second filter to the rear top of the injection pump should be the inlet and the one on outside centre is the return. These pumps also sometimes trap air in the inlet to the transfer pump,and no amount of bleeding will clear it,so crack the inlet connection also. Lessons learned in 70 yrs of frustration,dirt,dust and diesel! in Australia 👍✅🚜

Great work! I'd be afraid of that pump diaphragm cracking and leaking fuel into the crankcase, but most of this stuff is tough. I'm big on taking mech pumps out and fitting electric pumps to get rid of needing to crank the motor to get pressure and there is no risk of the mech pump blowing fuel into the motor. I restore cars and they can sit for a time so it's nice to have the option to have full pressure and full bowls before grinding the starter for a long time. I have just put electric pumps inline to boost the mech pump too. Depends on diesel or gas, but I'm sure there's a way to rate pressure and flow of your mech pump to see if an electric pump may be an option. I very much enjoy your work on these great machines!

Hi Matt, I‘m a regular follower of your channel, I findet very interesting what you do and also your solutions to some of the technical issues. Here in this video I found the way you closed the primary fuel feed line from the tank to the pump fairly ingenious. Also I love the honesty of your videos , you focus on the solution of the problems and do not built up a big story around your own person, your team etc as others do, (like f.I. ###### Sparks). I would only wish you took a little more care of your own health, especially wear gloves when you work on oil or fuel, it is not good for your skin when you get in contact with such substances. Gloves like doctors wear, made from nitrile are cheap, don‘t influence the tactile feeling when handling nuts and bolts and give you at lest a basic protection.so take care, I‘m looking forward for your next video. Btw I‘m from Germany…

It is great fun tuning into your channel - I always learn new things when watching. However in your description of the fuel system, I think the way that it goes is as follows: The line coming out of the second fuel filter and into the right side of the injector pump is really the feeding line. The line coming out of the side of the injector pump is the return line. At least that is how it was described to me. I have a Ford 340B with a similar looking injector pump.

Good work Luke. Another thing to look for which can cause issues is, on some of the CAV pumps there is yet another gauze filter under the union where the inlet fuel pipe goes into the injector pump. Once you have removed the inlet supply pipe, unscrew the next part as well and on the inside of that you might find a brass gauze filter too. I have seen these on lots of Perkins engines with CAV pumps and if the filters are not changed regularly, they can block up too which causes problems starting due to poor fuel delivery. Love your videos 👍

My ex had a MB Sprinter CDI... over time it got harder and harder to start while warm, and I figured that it was the low pressure fuel pump as the symptoms fit with my C class that was fixed with a new pump. Changed the pump, no difference. It was so bad, that I added a new fuel line with outboard style squeege bulb just to get it running. Then one day I figured, hey, maybe it’s the filter... took out the hose connection towards the HP pump and pressed the bulb...barely a trickle coming out. Went to get a new filter, installed it and squeezed again - diesel shot up 2 meters in the air. Fixed. And I felt sooooooo dumb!

I bet that tractor was made in England, or at least the engine. I'm not 100% sure what injection pump that is, but it looks like some version of a CAV/Lucas. I believe the line you call a return is actually the supply and the other line coming from the timing window is the bleed line, but that's an odd setup. There is a vane pump inside the injection pump, but it feeds pistons that actually create the high pressure for the injectors. I've seen this same kind of issues a lot of times. All the crap settles to the bottom of the tank and ends up in the lift pump. A lot of tractors have the first fuel filter before the lift pump just for that reason.
@DieselCreek
@DieselCreek 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I was thinking it should have a filter before the lift pump for sure but doesn’t. Also I believe you are right out being made in England, seems to me I found a tag on it somewhere that said that.

If that little screen in the lift pump would have been cleaned occasionally it prob would have never had an issue but I didn’t know it was in there and who knows if anyone’s ever pulled it out since new, I’ll blow it out every time I change oil now

The trash in the lift pump was before your filters. Put a tank shut off valve at the tank and a in line brass mesh filter in a clear housing ( like glass) that you can see when it collects crap. I did that to my M.F. 210. Have never had any more issues. I liked the inner tube and quarter trick on that banjo fitting 👍

Hey, it's great to see some 454 videos! I bought a neglected one and am in the process of doing a functional restoration. I've been having similar fuel issues on mine. None of the filters had been changed for decades as far as I could tell. When I took of the primary fuel filter, it was full of grit. Looked like someone had emptied a cup of coffee grounds on it. Couldn't even see the baffle holes where fuel should flow into the filter. Makes me wonder about the condition of the fuel tank. I learned some things from your video and confirmed some suspicions. Thanks for posting some great 454 content!

Seeing this tractor running brings back some good memories from my childhood. My family bought a 1971 IH 444 new. My first driving experiences were sitting on my Dad's lap and steering it. Then I graduated to operating it on my own. Nice to see that you have a couple of Red Tractors there on your farm. What's the story on the other Red Tractor that we get a glimpse of from time to time ?
