Detroit engines never die, they just hibernate. I can't tell you how many times I've seen that play out. Ten, twenty , or even longer years, clean things up, un-stick everything, give it fuel and power and away you go! Nice find, and can't wait to watch it crawl to the road.

Old CATs were the same way. Dozer had been sitting in a field for over 35 years. Swapped out the pony motor, cranked over, and fired like it was shutdown yesterday. Try doing that in 15 years with any of this computer controlled junk.

They're not the most powerful nor fuel efficient but 2 stroke Detroits are one of the most durable engines ever made. When they do need rebuild it's an easy job to throw in new sleaves. Got 4 of them on the farm, 3 in equpment and 1 in a 1968 Pete. 2 years ago saved an old 1957 Eluclid crawler with a 6-71 Detroit burried in the woods for 40+ years just like this dragline your saving. Just like you I freed up the rack and she fired up in a couple minutes. Can't wait to see you finally drive this old girl out of her grave! Love this one Matt!

I was an Oiler/Driver on a Bantam Dragline back in 1975. The house was mounted on pontoons ... the damn thing crawled through the FP&L, Turkey Point Power Plant, Cooling Canal System located in the Tidal Zone of Southern Biscayne Bay.. We would be taken out to work and picked up by airboat. Mechanics and Fueling, the same way. A lot of the equipment we used in and around this area, came out of Southern Louisiana. Rollagon and Pouchet are two of the Equipment manufacturers I remember.

I don't know if you have heard of this before but original coka cola works great for freeing up stuck parts, I watched an old mechanic, well I did the lift and carry, put small funnels over some stuck head studs, filled them with coke, we came back the next day and they just unscrewed. Those old 2 stroke GM diesel engines were one of the classic diesel engine designs in all of history. I used to work on them and still have a couple in my garage and some parts for others. My youngest son is fascinated with them. The cleverest thing of all that GM did was to design an entire system of engines of varying cylinder arrangements, that all share common parts. The 71 series were the best known early ones. They made them all the way from 2 cyl to 12 cyl. Any cylinder liner and piston from any of those engines could be used in any other 71 series engine with no issues. A 4 cyl head would fit on one side of an 8V-71, a 6 cylinder head would fit one bank of a 12V-71 and so on. This was critically important to the US military in WWII as they were used in everything, especially boats. Common parts saved an awful lot of grief in getting parts to where they were needed. These engines were all first cousins to the 567 series of 2 stroke diesels that were used in Electromotive Diesel Railroad Locomotives. They are just bigger, but similar design principles. After the war they did the same with the 53 Series. My next door neighbor has a 2-53 power unit, mounted on its own skid frame with radiator and fuel tank. He uses it to power his small sawmill. We have a couple of 3-53's and lots of parts, 2 6V-53's in old trucks, one running, and one not but could be. They can sit for years without freezing up as they don't allow air to get inside the engine very well. The are dead reliable. I live in Maine and tons of 3-53's were used in skidders in the woods. Still a lot of em around. My son loves working on them. They are old fashioned but a very simple and easy engine to work with. I used to install more than a few new ones in commercial fishing boats early in my career. The environmental issues put them out of fashion, sadly. They were tough and built to work. This modern machinery is not built to do that for too long as they will need you to buy a new machine in a few years. These old guys will run forever if you take care of them! Dont ever start one up that's been sitting until you make sure the injectors are not stuck. You can have a runaway real quick. Don't ask how i know that. I saw a man's heavy winter coat thrown into the airbox of a 6-71 in the shop one day that suddenly had a mind of it's own. The only way we could stop it quick.

Was jealous when I saw the starter. I used to run an old crane, I think it was a Northwest. Had a hand crank to start the pony motor. Then wait 5 minutes, pull the clutch, push on other lever to start the big motor. Should be a boom dog for the boom hoist. That way when you free up the clutch, the boom doesn’t come crashing down. Instead of holding a phone while trying to record, put a dashcam on the window.

Yep that is a 353 series. You confirmed it for me when it cranked and ran. The 53 series has distinct sound that is different from the 71 or 92 series Detroits. The sound difference is primarily due to the design of the blower with straight lobes. The 71 and 92 series had twisted lobes in the blower and ran a “bit” quieter. Great video, thanks for sharing!

It's awesome of someone like you that is not there that you knowing the sound of that motor that you recognize the year and model, that's a passionate for what you know and love 👌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

@@shaneolivier1650 You give me too much credit for knowing the year. The 53, 71, and 92 series of Detroit Diesel engines referred to the displacement in cubic inches per cylinder and not the year like it sounds. I spent 10 years of my life listening to and working on these engines. I think that sound memories are like memories of smells. One whiff or one sound instantly brings old memories into sharp focus. At this point in my life, anything that helps with memory is a plus.

I knew it would run. DD53’s are amazing. You can’t hurt them. I always loved how they prime the fuel so easily when you change the fuel filters and how high they will rev! I had one run away and it will scary you silly how loud and fast they can rev. You can’t close that air flap fast enough! I also had one run backwards which is fun to see exhaust smoke out the air filter, but the best one was when one threw a rod out both sides of the block and the guys were still running it! It had no oil in it, and the block looked like a window, and you had to floor it to make it move and yet the still ran it for about 45 min like that before I showed up. Tell me that isn’t one amazing engine.

I love to hear an old diesel come back to life. When Matt hears the first growls of raw power & sees black smoke as the engine clears its throat, screaming, "damn it, let's getter done!" Matt lights up like a young fellow after his first kiss! 👍😎

6:16 Bobcat is actually running their own engine designs now for a lot of applications. The current one has a very interesting piston design that reduces emissions to the point of not needing the SCR systems on the larger tier 4 stuff. We run a fleet of Doosan loaders and excavators, Honestly aside from a few weird issues that also plagued a few other brands they have been really well designed and built. Way easier to service than the bobcat and hitachi(john deere) stuff of the same size.
