Reminds me of the time when I was 15 years old, I helped take down a old silo with sledgehammers, a cable and a tractor. We knocked out a bunch of ground level cinder blocks and then walked to the tractor to pull it down. Before we got to the tractor the silo collapsed. We were very lucky! The floppy eared goats stole the show! 😅 For quite some time I was wondering who was hollering as he tried to pull down the silo and the cable snapped, then the bird's eye view revealed the 5 goats of the apocalypse watching the action, being jumpy every time something made a noise and then hoofed it as the cable snapped with a bang - was hilarious! -Another thing, though. That beautiful loader should get a roll bar or cage. I would get so itchy operating that on a slope knowing there is little chance to get away from it if it tilts. 😞- Nevermind, saw the video where he built one 😅

You just need to know how to read a structure: What is holding it together? In this case, he could have cut a few metal bands at the bottom and push or pull it over. Those bands are holding the stones together. Cut them loose and the walls will crumble. Just like in part one, where he could have nudged the floor and let the sheared basement collapse. That way he would have had a safe demolishment site, right at the beginning.

The weight of the top of the tower keeps the blocks at the bottom of the tower in compression, and that makes them hard as hell to knock out. Unless you are going to blow the bottom out (overkill for a little silo like this) or use a pneumatic chisel, then starting at the top is the best idea.

The steel straps around the silo hold everything together. You have to destroy them first.
@donaldlindgren68173 жыл бұрын
The bands hold the blocks in compression and concrete is very strong in compression. A wooden pole is no match for concrete. Cutting a few bands on the bottom would have facilitated pulling it over. However you got it done so it is hard to argue with success. Also, I can't help thinking that about 20 years from now when someone decides put up a building there, that the guy digging the foundation is in for a nasty surprise.
@ohiofarmer59183 жыл бұрын
Haven't watched the thing enough to know what worked, but my vote would have been to cut the banding maybe five bands up. Cut it in the middle and chain it to the dozer and maybe rip out the bolts and concrete to start the process Then get a long I beam and push it from the inside out with the dozer

If this is like the UK silos I know, (probably not) the steel bands are to contain the walls if the grain inside gets explosive. The key is to cut the lower bands then pull from behind, at a safe distance, on a band higher up. The blocks will cave in allowing the silo to topple as the supporting blocks are pulled in and removed.
