A little piece of history: I live in Michigan. When I was about 11 my uncle was providing sand for the construction upgrade of parts of the main thoroughfare from Lansing to Grayling. US 27 was undergoing the new "limited access" highway upgrading. My uncle had a 100 acre farm within about 1/2 mile of the projected new road so he assembled bull dozers and earth movers and started to excavate sand from his property. I believe it was the sand that they used to mix the concrete. After the new "Expressway" was completed past his farm he put rubber tires on one of his D-8's so he could pull a gondola from an earth mover up the new concrete road loaded with the clean sand to the next staging area. As the staging area got further away he changed the gear ratios inside that D-8 so it could travel faster. I was staying at the farm for a week during the summer of about 1961 or 1962 and went with my Aunt when she took my Uncle out to the area where he was excavating the sand. When we got there we were all surprised by one of the dozers parked in a small lake of very clear and clean standing water. Over night the place where he was removing sand had filled up with water. I came back later that day and swam in 2 1/2 feet of water. It was warm and clean and just beautiful. Just as clear as a swimming pool but with a sandy bottom. For the next 50 some years my Dad's entire family came out to that little lake for our yearly 4th of July family gettogether. Covid 19 was the end of the reunions. The lake is still there to this day. ben/ michigan

I just happen upon you video . In my early years my Father owned a strip mining company back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I spent many of day's riding on the the D8 with him. He would start the pony engine let it warm up then my job was to engage the leaver to start the main motor . If you was sitting in the operators seat the area to the right he had a wooden wire spool that was what I sat on . I miss my dad and your video brought back so many memories, Thank you !

A comment on your starting procedure. When the main engine fires off, immediately put it to idle and allow it to idle for at least 30 seconds preferably 1 minute before you rev it up to allow oil pressure to build and stabilize. You have a great friend in Sam! Take care of that guy and thanks for referring me to his channel. I really like his and yours. Love those old machines.

To make a loop on cable, cut the cable for a clean cut, split the cable down 50/50 halving it down to twice the required loop size, make the loop by crossing the halved ends and rewinding the halves back on them selves creating the loop. I have never used cable clamps on the looped ends but have taped the “Y” joint to prevent puncture wounds when handling the cable. Hop this helps.

We ran Cat D8Hs back in the 1970s. This was on a rock fill job, and no, the one with the rope blade didn't do well grading out rock, we had to use the hydraulic blade ones for that. There are/were several different shapes of blade for these machines, and I don't think the one you have is ideal for really digging into the ground. I must search out my Caterpillar Handbook and see what it says about blade shapes. Turbos of that vintage weren't as robust as they are now. I seem to recall that we were supposed to let the engine idle for several minutes at start up, to make sure the oil was circulating through the turbo before getting into hard work. Also I think the recommendation before shutting down was to idle for 5 minutes before closing down, to let the turbo cool down gradually. If you haven't done it already, I'd recommend flushing out the turbo oil supply line, you wouldn't want to be pumping sludgy stuff into that nice recon turbo would you? Nice to see a D8H back in work, must be nearly 50 years since I sat on one. Oh yes, please tighten the tracks!

When we do change outs, We get a cable tape from electricians that's used on large diameter cables like 4/0 or bigger. It's made by scotch, it's 2in wide, it's a little thicker than normal Electrical tape and better glue i think. It works great. I mean It's made for copper cables. Why not use them on steel ones? lol. Wow! you had the turbo rebuilt and were so proud of it, then in your last shot your hauling the old girl down the road without any cover on the exhaust, spinning that new/rebuilt turbo with no oil going to bearings. One of the first things I learned as a young buck mechanic working on Cat tractors, is when you hall a machine with a turbocharger was to close up the exhaust stack. Here's hoping you don't lose another bearing.

Matt, thanks for sharing the TLC going into this old gal and how you fix her aching bones. The recovery operation brought back so many memories from when I ran the Recovery Section for 123rd Support Bn. 1st Armored Division from 1987-1989. We didn’t have the luxury of coming back the next day to get the equipment so we worked through the night. I had some of the hardest working, dedicated, professional recovery crew members I ever worked with in 23 years of service. Plus we had all the gear we could need including two fully equipped M88A1’s Tracked Recovery Vehicles. I believe that with a 3:1 purchase that Komatsu would’ve easily pulled Big Boy up the hill.

Hi Matt if my comment about saddling a dead horse gave you flack I do apologise. It's clear now I couldn't see how you'd done that as it was behind your hand. Your skill and ability is incredible and considering your age almost unbelievable, I can only assume you had someone great around you that encouraged your practical side. I would never intend to offend anyone, I thought I could return a little knowledge as I have gained so much from watching your videos but I guess not on this occasion, hopefully I can be useful one day. Keep being you and doing your thing, It's working great for you.

The hole in the end of the cable transit tube was probably for a mouse line that was left in situ for pulling the cable through after changing operations from winching to blade lifting.

It's funny, Matt, in the last video when you were pushing that brush pile at first I thought to myself that D8 really should not be struggling that much to push that pile. I realize it's a hefty pile of brush, but man.. that thing should be a beast with pushing power that is what it's made to do. I hope it's something easy for you to take care of, 3 minutes in and ready for a fun filled 40 more! Thanks man for all the hard work you share with us! edit: that is a pretty darn bright headlamp!!

Amazing how improving the performance of such a small part can have such a massive effect on overall performance in such a huge piece of plant. Makes you realise how important it is having access to the correct operating/repair manual! Landscaping that area of soil outside the shop was easy work for the beast and will get even easier when you sort out the blade angle. I'm looking forward to seeing you at work at the steam show!

Gotta get yourself a big ole snatch block for your Komatsu in case you get that D8 stuck again ! Less strain on the Komatsu and a slower pull with more power ! Glad to see the old girl back in action...now to get that blade fixed up !

Seeing that cable snap brought back memories of visiting the Long Beach Navy Shipyard shop in the 1980s that dealt with rigging wire rope, chain, and cable for my destroyer. It was amazing to see these experts weave wire rope, replace shots of anchor chain or help Deck Division maintain ships boat davits, etc. PS - Wow, you’re right in that real life drama is much better then TV made up drama!

I learned splicing wire rope from 6mm to 30mm back in the 80s when I had a timber harvesting business. Funnily enough, remembering how to do it recently saved a friend having to find someone to splice the cable on an inclined plane lift he's working on.
