Ever since I was 8 years old I have always had constipation and was always eating weird medications to get rid of the pain in my stomach. No doctors could figure it out what the problem was, and now 15 years later I still have constipation. Until two weeks ago when I watched your video about diet for dancers and decided to cut down on gluten, suger and salt. Within two days the problem with my stomach hade just stopped and now 12 days later I still haven´t taken any medication. It turnsout that I´m gluten intolerance, so if you hadn´t made this video I would still be eating gluten and be in constant constipation. You literally change my life. So I just want to say Thank You for everything Kathryn!

Although it's great that this works, I would recommend you go to a doctor and get your levels vitamins, blood cbc, ect checked, as well as an endoscopy and blood work done to confirm if you actually have Celiac's Disease. If you do, you actually have to be more avoidant of accidental exposures. Gluten is present in MANY supplements and medications, putting yourself at risk for nutritional deficiencies as a result of accidental exposures to gluten is a serious health risk. Gluten intolerance is not widely accepted as a medical diagnosis by most of the medical community and can largely be overapplied as a form of dietary pseudo-science aided by the placebo effect.

I'm a three meal a day person too. also hypo thyroid. I noticed that what works for me is (& I have a hard time doing this because I have a family that I have to cook dinner for,) I reverse the meal sizes. Most people eat a small breakfast, a small lunch, and a big dinner. But try flipping it, and eat a large breakfast, smaller lunch, and really small dinner, like a bowl of cereal, salad, or something, and then maybe a yogurt as a snack at night. That's what works for me. I still get to eat my big meal, so I don't feel like I'm starving myself, but when I go to bed, i don't get so bloated and full.

As long as you can make it work for you, that's great! It's not always best since eating vegan and getting the nutrition a dancer needs can be time consuming, and/or expensive and people can't always afford that, or some people can feel bloated all the time from all the nuts, seeds and legumes you need in such a diet, but if you can do it I think it's great you get to do your passion while being friendly with animals and the environment.

Love this video and your channel so much!!! Just a little something for the future diet videos...a lot of dancers (as you know) have eating issues and so I think you should really push the "food is fuel." I think by going into more detail and explaining that eating and fueling your body is more healthy than not eating will help you reach more people. Also explaining that it is not very healthy for young dancers to focus on losing weight most of the time, and that is more something for the older people but that everyone can and should still eat healthy:)

I was always the chubby kid until I was twelve then I started Pointe and danced ballet 6 hours a week along with 7 hours of other dance classes and now I'm 14 and am a little skinny even though I eat like almost 3,000 calories a day and am still skinny so well I went from chubby to skinny in 2 years and I didn't even try to so well I'd don't know?
@b00gieb4by27 жыл бұрын
Kate lives to dance -Ballet (especially pointe) is a very vigorous exercise, so even of you do eat a lot of food, you're most likely burning more calories than you eat (until you eat again of course). At least that's what my doctor told me when I danced. And two years to lose weight is a long period of time so most likely not only did you burn calories, but you also probably toned and built muscles; this is especially in your leg & abdominal region:) Also like my doctor told me then too, repeated exercise helps you build up your metabolism so that's most likely another factor to your weight.

A good diet for a dancer (especially ballet) would be, vegetables, chow Mein, rice (white or fried), no chicken, no pork, no beef, no fish, chocolate milk, milkshakes, tea (hot or iced), no coffee, no smoking and defiantly no alcohol. Chocolate milk including chocolate milkshakes would be good for your bones, but only in moderation. White milk would never help! Rice milk or soy milk are better alternatives.

I just want to say to Monamielarose that I really hope you won't hold yourself back from dancing until you look a certain way. If you love movement, go find a class and enjoy it! I was in the same position as you not too long ago, and dancing is actually the biggest part of what has been getting me back in shape. A most important thing for me was accepting and embracing that a) I am not an 18 year old dancing for 28 hours a week nor is that a possibility and b) enjoying what I can do now and giving myself credit for the "wins" that I accomplish in this new context (e.g. appreciating getting a double pirouette down on flat instead of being mad it wasn't a triple on pointe). Anyway, good luck!! PS - this blog has been a favorite of mind for perspective and humor on this, I recommend starting from the beginning: adultbeginner.wordpress.com/

Thank you, this is nice of you. But you know it's not only about the look, what I feel doesn't satisfy myself either. I'm not obese at all or anything, but when you feel you could lift your legs higher and sweat a less, it's a bit painful. I stopped only 6 or 7 months ago, (and danced since the age of 4 (I'm 19)), and because I have to reduce my lessons from 6 to 1 per week (thank you, University), I don't want this privileged moment to be spoiled... Well, well, well, anyway thank you and I hope you know what I meant ^^ (I that my English is understandable... ;) )

So first of all I think some pounds/kilos more than usual is not a problem and a motivation to stop dancing! Dancing is for everyone no matter what. Don't stop expressing your self! Anyways dancing will help you get in shape and have a better technique! Second of all every dancer started like us - just a student who managed to be a professional! So you can also do things professionals do.It's not illegal not to be a professional!

Indeed, finding out what works is the key. I tried low carb high protein and had good results, nice muscle definition and low body fat. I was fit and lean, but I was constantly tired and craving for crabs and sugars. I'm now eating whatever I want (not healthy) and eve though my weight did not change, I lost some muscle and gain more body fat. It's hard to find that balance....
@alyssabeyer32328 жыл бұрын
Women can`t bulk up like men, or even female body builders, because men have a higher level of testosterone and body builders have a very secific way of living and exercise routine. So lifting heavy won`t bulk you up, in fact it could possibly help your dancing because you work more of your muscle. Just be sure to alternate your days and stretch properly so that your body heals fully. (I`m a personal trainer and dance/fitness instructor, so I think I know what I`m talking about. Usually. ^_~)
@arrowchild7 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is a year old, but just wanted to toss a bit of info in for dancers who might be reading and considering weight training. Just like everything else, whether or not your body will tolerate weight lifting without bulking up depends on individual body type. I have a mesomorph body type, which means I bulk up extremely easily. For the average person who participates heavily in dance or fitness classes for health reasons, the amount of muscle someone like me gains by lifting weights is perfectly acceptable/desirable. But pre-professional and professional dancers are working in a very specialized field and have to achieve a certain aesthetic along with a healthy, high functioning body. For some dancers, particularly those who have issues with strength, heavy weight training might be perfect! But for others, like me, it just doesn't work. When I was a dance major in college, after years of training with weights, I finally figured out the right thing for my body type included no heavy lifting and a lot of pilates/resistance band exercises. I'm still more muscular than the average dancer, but I look a lot more lean now that I don't have the bulk weight lifting gave me.
@madelinelebet39156 жыл бұрын
arrowchild omg I gain muscle and weight so easy it's just ridiculous. Your comment actually helps now I know I should at least check out this. Everyone says dancers can lift weight and they won't gain muscle but that is so so so false for me in particular.

Three meals a day is an advice many doctors give now, because in this way, the organs can digest all the food and also relax and then hunger appears again and shows us that the body is ready for the next meal. Meat, dairy products and eggs might be responsible for some diseases of our time (heart problems, cancer, weight gain, see Dr Neal Barnard's clips on KZbin).

Hi Katy! Thanks so much for doing this video as I got tons of cool tips, like usual! This might sound weird, but I like hearing that you are a 3 meal a day eater as well. All I keep hearing is the importance of eating 5 times a day, but honestly finding time to do that is difficult when you are busy. Not to mention, my appetite isn't big enough to eat 5 times a day. I am chastised a lot because I don't do this, but I agree, do what works for you! Also can't agree enough about salt intake, not just for losing weight fast, but in general. The salt content usually turns me away from soups that are packaged/canned, so I try to avoid soup unless I made it myself using low salt stock/bouillon.

Processed, sweet and creamy ones, like ranch or mustard-honey, are usually loaded with sugar and/or unhealthy fats (most cheap, plant-based oils are not very good for you, and are the ones most often used on mass production), which can pretty much ruin the effort of eating salad on the first place. You might wanna either avoid them and stick to simple stuff like lime, some salt, balsamic vinegar and olive oil; make your own with little sugar and using healthy oils like avocado, coconut or olive; or to really search for brands that stick to healthy ingredients. Whatever the case, you do want to get some fat going on, maybe olive oil, avocados, nuts, olives, etc. because vitamins can essentially be split into the ones that are water soluble and the ones that are fat soluble, there's always water on salads (lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, celery, etc. are mostly water) but there's not always fat and you could be missing nutrients.

This is so true. We have to figure out what works for us. I had food intolerance test done, and I discovered that I was lactose intolerant, and that my body really, REALLY dislikes sugars. Hey, I am a chocolate junkie, it was the worst discovery ever! However, I modified my diet, and I feel much, much more energized and those gnarly extra pounds simply melted away :D Oh, yes... And i am nuts for nuts :D

Good for you for getting the test! And I understand about the sugar. Not fun!

When I was a dancer I got introuble for having potato chips and sharing it. One girl got introuble for wanting to go to Trader Joe's and buy chips. She was not aloud to go and buy anything.

While I know that you are not a nutritionist and there was a disclaimer, but starting off with Nutritionists (as in RDN) absolutely know what they are talking about or at least have a better idea. For example, carb free anything, is actually pretty darn dangerous. Losing weight is energy in energy out period unless you have a thyroid condition. This is not a subjective magical think, it is actually science.

Hi Katy: This video is great! can you pls share some tips for losing fat around your waist and lower ab? And also, what do you think of dried banana chips? Are they healthy snacks or no?
@kathryn_morgan10 жыл бұрын
kexin Huang Yes! I will do a video on losing ab fat. And as far as banana chips go- they are ok in moderation. They just have a LOT of sugar and calories. Real bananas are better! :)

Im an "eat 1-4 meals a day, depends on if I have/want food" kind of person... Also, I can't afford healthy food, only junk food with the occasional halfway heathy food... but im 111 pounds (Im 15, and 5'3 ) and I can count my ribs... I need some healthier food... apples sound good rn... but I have TMJ (long story short...my Jaw's off) so I can't hardely chew so I can't eat apples...

I stopped going to my endocrinologist and haven't been taking my medicine anymore and I've been doing the 5 meal a day thing and I have lost some weight. But now I'm back in ballet after a year I'm suddenly conscious again about what i eat and i'm thinking of going back to 3 meals a day. But because I'm 16 a lot of my friends have been throwing a lot of birthday dinners and I've noticed I'm putting on some weight again. I can barely keep track of the calories I eat. And I can't really understand because I've noticed my thighs HAVE gotten smaller yet I'm putting on some weight. Perhaps in the stomach area?

Maybe it's muscle? Muscle is heavier than fat so that could be it
@anika50944 жыл бұрын
About weight lifting, if you lift SUPER heavy and only do one or two reps, you'll gain strength without gaining muscle.

Well like she said, Diet is a big part of losing/gaining weight. But im sure if you googles it, some exercises would come up. But i've found that smiling works your face out honestly lol. Like if you just go from a straight face to a smile over and over again, after a while it helps.

I’m thirteen, should i still eat only 1500 calories? Or should i eat more because i’m growing? Also, is it bad to not have a thigh gap as a dancer? I’m not sure what i should be aiming to look like or what i should eat/how much for my age
@Rosieposie9557 жыл бұрын
Lily Jenkins you can try, but don't focus on it too much and if you're hungry a lot, eat more. A thigh gap has to do with how your hips are formed, not necessarily with skinny or fat. Everybody is different and beautiful:) same for dancers, there's no right or wrong. In ballet you usually can't even see if someone has a thigh gap or not because they squeeze their legs together (look up pictures of dancer standing in first position). Hope this helped

Just to correct you if I may, it isn't no carb but in fact low carb since almost everything you eat contains carbs. You are merely removing starchy and sugary foods from your diet or limiting it. Which is like you said limiting sugar and gluten. It has in fact worked for many many people, dancers or not. Some people can function on low carbs. Others can function on a high carb diet. Just my two cents. Great video though. :)

Do u have to eat vegtables ???

Yes! Vegetables have lots of fibre and calcium in them, vegetables are probably the most important food groups.

I don't many foods or much variety. I just don't want to try foods that I'm 99.99999999999% sure that I won't like. I don't eat meat or seafood. I eat only some fruits, not many types of fruits currently. And I'm not a big vegetable person, I'm more of a fruit person. I do eat many grains. Bread, granola, oatmeal, and rice. And I love yogurt, milk, water, and only some juices. I don't eat enough variety of food to make an actual meal. So I eat about 5 or 6 small "meals" throughout the day and drink lots of water because I move around a lot. They're more like snacks, but of a bigger quantity. So I eat 2 waffles, some low-fat vanilla yogurt, and maybe a clementine or a bit of granola, and that's my breakfast. And that fills me up for about two-three hours. If I'm feeling a bit peckish, I might eat a granola bar or some unsalted crackers with some water or juice. Overall, I think I'm okay, maybe my taste buds will change and I'll actually like more foods in the future. I'm 14, almost 15, I've got my whole life ahead of me to try food.

I feel your pain; I am super underweight and for the past three years have had dietitians etc trying to help me gain weight. A lot of people will say you're lucky and they wish they were you, but actually being underweight is not fun, and if you're definitely eating that much and not gaining weight, you should see a doctor, to make sure there isn't a medical reason why you're unable to put weight on.

I think people often say 'gluten' but mean 'wheat'. I know people who can't handle wheat, it makes them ill, but are fine with oats. Or it's the mixture of wheat flour and sugar that affects them badly.
