I started Ballet when i was 23, it was soooo complicated yet so fun, a funnier fact, i got a distinction on my first exam when i was less than a year in my classes. I was so proud of myself and so happy... Although, best moment of my life was getting my pointe shoes 6 months ago, i wanted them since i was a lil kid and now, i have them!!! i'm 25, taking class with 11 year olds and i for sure couldn't be happier :)

Do you dance just for fun or do you actually perform or something? I'm 22 and I've wanted to be a dancer since I was a child, but my parents would never let me take classes, and then once I became an adult I just couldn't afford it. Now I'm 22 and extremely depressed that I can't accomplish my dream of becoming a professional dancer.

Work on your ankles' strength as much as you can, listen to your teacher and be careful. Patience is also key, don't do anything crazy (I did and got a sprain soooo...) Good luck honey

It started just for fun, but this year I made my second exam with the Royal Academy of Dance, so, its getting serious, I don't think I have a chance to dance professionally (still have hope tho) but I hope I can give classes someday

You are so encouraging! Thank you for this video. I am an adult and I began formal ballet classes at age GULP! 41!! I've danced in 4 recitals and LOVE IT!!!!!!!! At recitals I tend to feel odd among all the beautiful young talented dancers; however,I remind myself to have fun and enjoy!!!! Love your videos!

This is the best address to adult beginners I have ever heard in my life. I havent taken ballet since adolesence but I so much want to go back with all my heart. This video has given me the courage. Kathryn addressed every single thing deep in my thoughts. I love this woman. She is absolutely a wonderful person. She talks to the heart and soul of a person. She is an unsnobby, and very, very kind soul. Very beautiful inside and out.

I'm 21 and started dancing ballet about a year ago. I absolutely love it! It's a great way to exercise my body and mind. I go to an adult beginners class and it's so encouraging and fun to meet people of all ages and body types. I'm currently working on my flexibility, because I've never been very flexible. I'm getting there, it's a slow process but I feel like I'm getting better every day. Dancing makes me feel beautiful and strong. I know I'll never be a professional, but for me ballet is a wonderful way to treat myself.

After watching Josephine on The Pointe Shop videos, I've fallen in love with ballet. My only experience was taking a free ballet class for 6 months when I was 9 years old and I wish my parents had kept me in the class. Turning 59 this year and going to start with beginner basics as part of a recovery process for injuries and this video was very helpful. Thank you!

Great video, Katie! I'm an adult begginer and I've been taking classes for 10 years now. I actually started a channel here at KZbin about adult ballet, but I can't invite you to watch because it's in Portuguese ;) lol More and more adults are looking for ballet classes and I thinks it's great! Not everything you do in life is meant to become a career, but people used to think that you could only take ballet classes if you had a real chance of becoming a professional. Thank God that's changing! Ballet is fun and everybody who loves it should do it!

Hi, here's a note from the other end of the spectrum of ballet life. I'm 69, a former dancer, and living with fibromyalgia. I'm just designing a very gentle program for myself, going back to basics -- just because I have always loved it, and I believe "exercise" is a dirty word... You've given me a good starter plan, and I hope to gather other seniors together this fall to share the fun and happiness of ballet. Thanks.

It's so crazy that you posted this video this week. I had just gone back to ballet on Saturday (Jan 10, 2015) - THIRTY YEARS after my last barre. I'd taken ballet for so many years but I let the frustrations take over and I walked away when I was 17. I actually was placed in the intermediate class and I could not be more happy. I can honestly say that my spirit feels free in a way that I had forgotten it could feel. Thanks for the tips - I'll make sure to keep them in mind.

If the professionals can dance until they're 40, and I'm 19, well geez, I have ages to catch up! I'm starting ballet this term, and I plan to be en pointe and ready for my intermediate exam (RAD) by Jan 2023. By then I'll still be only 21 years old. After that, it'll only take one to two more years of training and one advanced exam to let me get signed with a small company. When I get experience, I can move on and someday audition for a bigger company! If you're younger than 20, THERE IS STILL TIME to become professional! Even if you're a few years older than that, you still have a chance if you put the effort in. Start now, and you can _easily_ achieve your dream! Do NOT be discouraged! I'm another late-starter here with you! We can do this together!

It's so intimidating being in class with dancers who have been doing this their whole life, but I think im holding my own! There's even been teachers who dont believe that i just started ha. Im so excited to get on stage and perform! You bet ill be staying tuned to your incredible channel. I appreciate all the tips and advice. Thank you! -Timmy

What makes me sad, is that adults can't pursue a career in ballet, like the young ballerinas. We don't even get to perform, and the whole "too old" attitude is both discouraging and depressing. All this really is, is an incredibly expensive hobby! I was never given the opportunity to dance as a kid, because my parents felt like sports & instruments were pointless and too expensive... Which is why it's not fair to the adults who would like to do something more with ballet, than just have a "getting out of the house, once a week" activity!

You are absolutely right!!! I have been thinking the same. People tend to focus so much on age which is just a number and nothing more. You should check out a KZbin channel I think it's called ballerina by night. I wish adult could go further with their ballet skills dancing than just keep it as a "expensive hobby"

It is very sad, I went to a sumer ballet class when I was like 5 years old, because I loved ballet, but my mom wasn't happy about it, she didn't want me to continue because she thought she'd be putting a lot of pressure on me. Now at age 23 I don't even know if I will ever get to be en pointe or perform at a recital...

I really love that you addressed this and I love your videos. Many studios do require their adult students to wear a black leo and pink tights too btw! I did ballet for about 12 years, I was cast by disney to work in a show, so it was fun...after 10 years of no doing much dancing I began last year to practice ballet with Ms K Morgan...I lost most of the weight I gained in the last 10 years....I am preparing now for auditions ...for adult characters in Nutcracker, I am super excited!..eventually I hope to advance to the point ..but as she said...is just for fun and practice.

I have started ballet 6 months ago. I'm doing a class at home almost everyday, thanks to you Kathryn. I have took a few personnal lessons with a russian retired ballerina and she was extremly nice but not a good teacher at all. She didn't understand a beginner adult point of view and my body boundaries, even if I'm very flexible and quite good in dance in generall. As an adult, we can't be considered as normal students of 9 years old. Our body, despise the work you put in it, can't be as plastic as a child. Of course we can improve and become an advanced dancer. But we have to work with our "adult failures". So my advice is really to find a teacher who understands what it takes to Begin ballet at our age, someone who gives advices mesuring our body qualities. My teacher was from the russian school, and as she only New this one, she tried to teach me this way. But beware : the russian school is not adapted at all for all body types and especially not for adult beginners. They will try to "break" your body so it fits ballet. But for most people, it just creates serious damages for our body. So please, beware of the teacher you choose ! It Can changes all your point of view and future in the ballet life. I didn't find an another teacher that can responds correctly to what I'm looking for. But I didn't give up, and, meanwhile, keeps practicing by myself !

I had never even seen a single ballet performance of any kind but I knew I wanted to dance something but I had no clue what. Then one day I was bored out of my mind just sitting around and I decided to watch a clip of ballet. The Waltz of The Snowflakes by the Royal Ballet is what I stumbled upon and I absolutely fell in love and I’ve loved ballet ever since! It’s a little hard sometimes, especially when there are so many people better than you and you feel as though you’re not improving, but like Katie said, it’s about you and you have to remember that! If you wanna give ballet a try you totally should. Just go for it! It really doesn’t matter what other people think!

My takeaways: 1. Find something comfortable to wear for class 2. Learn the basic terms 3. Don't feel bad for modifying moves, don't push it when it hurts too much 4. Focus on yourself, do your best and enjoy it 5. Find an encouraging teacher 6. Be realistic: start with basic barre - you don't start with triple fouettes 7. Be warm before class

In my old dance studio, I did 15 minutes of ballet as a warm up for other things such as hip-hop or lyrical. My old teacher said I was naturally talented and in September I started ballet class. I skipped to intermediate foundation since I had technique already in place before, I love it so much. I'm working on my flexibility and turnout at the moment. I'm nearly 13 now!

Hi Katie! I started taking ballet classes this past year in November 2022, and I enjoy it! I was having some serious doubts on whether or not I should even bother taking ballet classes. I’ve been wanting to take dance classes for fun for a bit, but I have to deal with nasty and discouraging thoughts that tell me that I’m too old, too overweight, and it’s too late. Like, what the heck? Well, I just decided to say “screw it” and took the classes anyways. Best choice I ever made in my entire life! I’m not looking to be a professional ballerina because that was never part of my career plans. I just want to do it as a pastime!

Thank you! I’d just like to share that I am 25 and started ballet in the pandemic! Although I’m the youngest person in my adult classes, I can’t bend or squat a lot due to a health condition. (It takes me 15 minutes just to put on shoes before standing up again.) That being said, I’ve come to LOVE ballet. I just hold onto the bar and move my lower body. I can’t do grand plies or turns, and I still get nervous when we let go of the bar, but it’s SO nice learning with other adults with different abilities. I found a way to feel elegant and strong and totally make ballet my own. Ballet looks different on every body and it is super fun to learn that!

Thank you so much for your encouraging words! I am an adult who took ballet as a child through my teen years. I dreamed of becoming a professional. I quit ballet after a teacher ridiculed me for not being good enough. I was hurt and bitter for years. I thought, if I can't be a professional, I don't want any part of ballet lessons. It's taken me about 25 years to be ready to let go of perfectionism and the dreams of "what could have been" and just find my love of ballet again. I just signed up for an adult ballet class and am excited and a little anxious about it. It helped to hear your words and let go of trying to be who I was when I was 15 years old. Thank you!!! Your videos are inspiring and helpful! I wish you all the best on your road to healing from your hypothyroidism and back to the stage!

I'm a 16 year old beginner who just had their first class yesterday, and I loved it. I know that I messed up and messed up a lot of it but I had fun. The moves I did (which are the very basics) I think I did decent enough, But I had an especially hard day today I did a lot of things that backfired (I was super awkward) and I was being really hard on myself and especially because it's a new thing I started feeling incredibly uncomfortable and insecure about the dancing I did. Thank you for this video because even though I'm not an adult you've kinda reminded me that those kids born way after me they've been dancing longer and I literally started yesterday and to not get so hung up on how it's supposed to look like if I have proper posture and try my best I will improve eventually.

Thank you so much for doing this video (and all your ballet videos). I have been doing adult ballet for less than a year. My teacher is lovely, but I have still sometimes got sad about how I look or the fact that my body won't do what it used to do. One thing that helped me so much - and it happened by chance, really - is that on a weekend in London with my daughter I went into Freeds and bought a leotard and ballet shoes. Having my kit fitted in such a glamorous shop made me feel like a real ballerina. I felt happier in class afterwards.

Hi, Kathryn. I'm 17 years old, and I really want to get into ballet and learn how to dance at a very advanced level (and hopefully get on pointe), but not as a career or anything (I'm attending college for a career in engineering, actually). I'm already in moderately good shape. In high school, I did Crossfit training and Cross Country running. I've also already started doing barre workouts and trying to improve my flexibility. The problem I have, though, is that I can't afford to go to classes more than once or twice a week, but I read online that you have to take 3 or 4 classes a week in order to become very good. What do you suggest I do?

***** Well you are definitely on the right track. Good for you for making a true effort and working hard. The more classes you can do on your own at home, the better you will be. Even if is just a barre in your living room, you will improve so so much. Try and also do more repetitions of combinations. That builds strength because you are doing twice as much work. Let me know how you are doing!

I'm 26 and want to get into ballet as my new exercise/hobby to stay healthy, fit, and strong. I always had respect for ballet dancers since my father told me the strength it takes for them to dance and jump with incredible accuracy. And I always loved dancing to stay fit and also have fun. But, it was only recently that I fell into this absolute fascination with ballet. I just love it now and want to pursue it as a solid part of my personal life. I don't want to make this a career, but I am serious about wanting to make it a "serious hobby" if you will. I want to do this. I'm older, but I'm serious about making a new part of my life.

I'm currently 18 and I danced ballet/tap combo class til I was 10. I didn't like my studio so I ended up quitting. I started ballet again 2 years ago. I've improved so much just by focusing and listening to what the teacher says. This video is great advice!

I unfortunately quit ballet due to a very condescending teacher I had. I had other teachers in the school that would give constructive criticism and give off good energy, but that one teacher ruined my experience. I hated it so much I would be so scared to go to class because of her. I love ballet and decided to go back at 19 and I’m so happy I did.

Thank you so much . For this . I’ve been taking Adult Beginner Ballet classes for a few weeks . And I’ve been practicing at home for 6 months . I love my Teacher . I take my classes at the National Ballet of Canada . It’s. Not a big class , yet so our teacher is so encouraging and fun . I’m learning the different terminology. I’m doing my homework . So I can feel a bit more confident when I’m at class . Today I messed up in a couple of combinations, I know how do them usually but I just zoned out , which isn’t good . I was tired that’s all . Can’t wait till next weeks class . This time last year I didn’t know what anTendu or a Pile or a Port de Bras was .. now I know . I have a bit of arthritis in my knee so I take care before class and stretch , and after . I would like to get some Leather Ballet shoes . I have 1 pair of Canvas . What do you like Kathryn ? Leather ? It’s a marble floor I dance on . Anyways thank you for this . 🌸

Thank you for this video. I started at around age 4 and gave up at 13 (one of my biggest regrets) when my first teacher left to teach overseas and I had a condescending teacher who kept reminding me about my bad feet. I am trying to start ballet again at the age of 36 and I can't even complete a double pirouette or do a split. I feel like I'm so behind. Your video really helps. Do my best!

I thought I was doing well starting at 48 (4 years ago), but 63 that's fantastic! I only wish I'd started much earlier. Like you, I absolutely love it, and look forward to every class. Earlier this year, I took part in the show that the whole dance school was involved in. I was SO nervous for the first two performances, but finally my nerves settled, and I really enjoyed the other performances.

You are so right about the teacher being right for you, I trained as a dancer for years but in my final years at dance school I had an awful teacher who just seemed to hate me and obviously because I was at school I couldn't just change teachers, so I dropped out at 17, it was possibly my biggest regret because I miss it so much and would have loved a career in it!

Like many others here I got discouraged to continue dancing because of a condescending teacher. I took 1 year of ballet at age 14, was able to do splits and then stopped. I was transfered soon after I started from a mixed teens/adults class where we were allowed to wear whatever to a teen class where I soon showed up in a gray leotard. She flipped. I did not know that we had to wear all black ones. No one told me back then and there she was yelling at me for what I was thinking to show up in a different colored leotard. She also never mentioned anything about doing exercises back home to strengthen muscles. Nor did she pay attention to my leg/knee - feet alignment doing plies which resulted in me having knee pain after a while. I wish I had a different teacher back then, I would have stuck around way longer. I did however get an A+ at high school years later in life for holding a one time ballet lecture. We had to choose a subject and then each one would teach the rest of class about the subject. So there I was able to teach others basics of ballet for one class. But anyway soon after I stopped taking classes we could not have afforded it anyway any longer due to life changing circumstance. Now 24 yrs later I am wondering if I should go for adult ballet classes again or rather do Jazz. Do you think taking ballet classes would be better first as a good prep for Jazz? Or is it possible to get really good at Jazz dance without ballet classes? Thank you!!!

Thank you Katie about this video! I started ballet about 4 years ago at the age of 23, and lately I've been strugling with the feeling of giving up. I'm taking advanced ballet classes with young, "real" ballet students, and I always feel that I suck, I'm only humiliating myself because I can't do everything right or even close to right. Actually, this morning I felt I don't wanna go to the class, cuz today we are going to pointe, and we just came back from Christmas holiday, so my body is still in holiday mode. I even thought that I'm going to quit ballet classes. But then I watched this your video, heard what you told about dancing for myself, for my own fun, and suddenly I wanted to go to the class. I'm definitely not going to be a good ballerina - not even close! But I've done so much work, not only at the classes but been training for myself, too. And even though I'm a adult dancer, I've been able to participate in shows - actually I was in Nutcracker! - and that's what I've always wanted to do: dance ballet, have pointe shoes and perform in ballet shows. So basically I'm living my dream... but I don't feel like that because I'm too strict to myself, I expect too much from myself. I should do this because I love ballet, I love music, and I'm very musical person. So thank you Kathryn for this video! You changed the way I felt (at least today) about ballet: it's not going to be my profession, so why should I stress about it so much? Just doing it because I love it. Thank you! You're the best!!

I am totally interested in taking your adult class! Thursday or Friday's are better for me as I have classes Mon- Wed. It's my 5th year back since dancing when I was young. I actually only took ballet for 2 years as a teenager and I do sometimes get frustrated with my turnout and technique, and dealing with injuries that a younger person could bounce back so easily. I love it, love it, love it! I've learned so much and am lucky to have such amazing supportive teachers, and I'm always looking to learn more from others, which is why I'm so happy I found your channel. Thanks for giving everyone your knowledge and experience, we are truly greatful. Kat

After retiring from a professional ballet career, 30 years dancing, 30 years retired...I went back to ballet class and LOVE it. It was like going home again. I wish I hadn't stayed away so long, but...Kathryn you are so right when you say not to be frustrated when you know what something is supposed to look like or they way it should feel. It has taken me 2 years to get back to a pretty good barre technique, even though my extensions are not what they used to be. Center work...well still trying to get that back under control. I have to remind myself of my age, and why I'm back in class. It's not because I'm planning on auditioning. Right? I will say that if you can take multiple classes per week, it helps tremendously! Kathryn, how about designing some comfortable, pretty dance wear for us older gals.

Sure do wish your videos would have been around back when I was studying ballet, about 35 years ago! I worked so hard to fight my flat feet, heavy legs and difficulty learning things like fouete turns!! My teachers often told me that I had a good understanding of technique, but it was quite obvious that I would never become a professional ballerina. I remember the night that I decided to quit ballet, how I wept, and watched "The Red Shoes" movie on TV. I'm 57 years old now, and have recently started swing dancing as a fun way to lose weight and to enjoy dancing!! I can honestly say that the ballet training had helped a lot with my swing dancing. I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't forget to enjoy yourself as a dancer! Merry Christmas everyone!!

This video is very motivating!! The last time I took a dance class was about 10 years ago (currently 22 years old) and it is a little challenging trying to get back into the ballet routine mentally and physically. The girls in the class I'm in are in high school or younger who have been dancing for a while/year after year and they go to a dance type high school. So I always feel left behind/the weakest link when we do exercises at the barre and across the room. Sometimes I get frustrated because I can't do the steps or moves like the other ladies. The comment about adults getting frustrated when they can't do a move correctly because they know how it's supposed to look is so accurate with me. I'm definitely going to try and get that thought process out of my head and just try my best or else I won't be able to enjoy the class. Luckily the teachers are very kind and understanding and let me go at my own learning pace. I'm so glad that you made a video for adults who are returning to ballet or starting ballet for the first time. This definitely helps boost my confidence and motivates me. Thank you so much!!

Dear Kathrin, thank you so much for this video!! Something I really need... My mum always told me I started dancing before walking... and I loved dancing above everything since I remember! I started ballet at 6, had three years and then moved to Africa. When we got back to Italy I was a teenager with such low self esteem that I never was able to go back dancing since 21 when I started salsa (still too low self esteem to not even look for an adult ballet class..!) Now I’m almost 44... I felt like “now or never” and also a school nearby opened an adult class so I just couldn't miss it!! Had just few months and then stopped for covid. Now I’m training on my own, and just few days ago I found your videos: just adore them!! I need to do yoga for my ernias every day, but apart from that, could you suggest me a week schedule? Again, thank you so much!!!!! I’m really loving training with you!!!❤️🙏🏻❤️

I'm studying to become a professional orchestra conductor. When I led my first weekly orchestra four years ago, I ended up with collapsed arches because I had bad technique and wasn't used to standing for so long. I started adult ballet classes a few months ago, and I have noticed that my feet are getting stronger. I think I'll keep going because it's helping my podium technique, I can workout while learning scores, and I might end up conducting ballet someday. My question is, would pointe be realistic in a few years, and would it be helpful for my feet? Or is it healthier to stick with non-pointe, since conducting is more of a flat-footed stance? I'm already 25.

I went back to ballet at 30 years old and got my first point shoes at 33. Not gonna lie, those shoes are really painful when you are an adult, and I didn't really do that much with them because I was finishing my dissertation for my PhD program. But I have Really fond memories of taking the pointe classes with nine year olds 😀! I just bought a ballet bar to use in my house. It's been many years and the muscle memory is there but the flexibility has to really be worked on again. But I hadn't realized how much I miss it. And as mentioned in this video, you're paying good money to attend the ballet class if you do it in person, and you deserve the same feedback as the young kids who might be professionals. I had the most success with a teacher who was in her 40s and was still on pointe. If you find that you're relegated to the corners of the studio and the teacher doesn't bother to correct anything you do, and even tries to discourage you from your dream of point shoes, find another studio.

Hi Katie! I'm Emily and I'm thirteen years old. I've just started ballet 2 years ago after 9 years of not doing it ( just doing contemporary) and as you could imagine, contemporary has become a part of me and I am having a really hard time not with the technique so much, but with getting used to the positions and the precision, unlike the freeness of contemporary, in which everyone has their own style. Naturally, girls my age who have been doing this for their whole lives, are significantly better and gradually getting their first pair of pointe shoes. I am secretly jealous of them, although I don't show it, because my teacher practically told me that I am never going to be good and always lack from other students, not even a question about pointe shoes. And I know I shouldn't be having any expectations, but yet I'm feeling my teacher thinks I'm a total joke and i'll never achieve a good level. Also my teacher is very strict about when dancers are ready to go on pointe( about toe strength and general strength and flexibility) and gives no cosideration to the dancer's age, like other dancer's teachers I have experienced and read about. The bummer is that I work so much harder than any other dancer ( I dance ballet 5 times a week) and my teacher doesn't even consider me. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I‘m 26 now. I recently started with ballet and I love it! Of course I know that ever being a professional is not an option but I love it for doing it as my hobby. The only thing that scares me is that I am not skinny yet. I do weigh more than a typical 6 oder 4 and that is not really the standart for ballet right? But I am on it to lose the weight, not just for ballet but for me.

Thank you for the wonderful tips! I'm just starting dancing/ballet. I always thought it was beautiful, and I wanted to get a good work out and better my posture. I'm starting beginning ballet at my college, yet the way the class is handled, there is a mix with advanced and beginner. I feel like they go way too fast and I can't find myself to pay attention to my teacher (and cause she goes so fast herself). I will look into your classes as well! Thanks again. :)
