One of the things i love about aspyn is how real she is! she’ll talk about eating half a bag of doritos or a candys she’s been loving. i just think it’s really refreshing seeing her unpack groceries with doritos and kraft mac and cheese whilst also incorporating healthy foods

I actually prefer the positive reviews like this. I think Abbey gives a lot of great info on nutrition and I feel they seem a lot more educational vs kind of hard to watch. I don't have any issues with food (except being a foodie :D ) so it's just a preference, I guess.

I like getting both. Hearing Abbey react to problematic stuff is really helpful when my own brain says stupid stuff to me, because there's a little Abbey on my shoulder going "Girl, you deserve food."

I hear what you mean! I enjoy the positive but I think the feedback on problematic food behaviors/thoughts is so needed because it's super normalized. There's stuff I've heard my whole life and thought it was "healthy" only to be challenged by Abbey in the best way. I cant imagine how valuable it can be for those who have ED and hear such a different voice and train of thought that gently corrects the distortions.

When I was about midway through my pregnancy I had to switch MFM doctors. I was like 230lbs so she wanted to speak with me about my diet and stuff. I explained to her that before I got pregnant I was losing weight and had just lost 20lbs, then I got pregnant and stopped going so hard with the calorie deficit and working out. At this point in my pregnancy I had only gained back a max of 10 pounds, barely. I don’t even think she listened to me. She just saw my weight and pulled out the BMI chart 🙄. Then we talked about my diet. I told her I eat quick oats, she said I needed steel cut oats. I told her I eat vanilla Greek yogurt, she said I NEEDED to switch to plain unsweetened low fat Greek yogurt. I said I really love dark green salads with some balsamic honey dressing, she said I should ONLY be having lemon and olive oil, and this went on and on… I left feeling like she was saying everything except YOURE TOO FAT TO HAVE A HEALTHY PREGNANCY so go home and gnaw on a head of broccoli.. I didn’t go back to her. I had a healthy pregnancy. Just needed to tell someone about that.

It's so interesting to watch these "what I eat in a day" videos when pregnant and on another continent. For example here in Finland seeds are not recommended at all due to possibly high heavy metal levels and protein powder is totally safe, as all foods are tested and have to be approved if they are sold. There are other differences too in the recommendations for foods for under one year olds, and it all is really interesting! Plus raw egg is also totally safe in Finland too (salmonella is closely monitored)

That's so interesting! I've noticed so many differences too! In the UK raw egg used to be a no no but it's now on the totally safe list as long as they are stamped with the red lion symbol eggs (which are eggs produced to certain safe standards; most supermarkets eggs are). Also I've noticed in the US as long as cheese is pasteurised its considered OK but in the UK mould ripened cheeses like Brie and Camembert are off limits unless cooked until piping hot!

This is not a "toot my own horn" moment, but I have never fed my kids something different from what the adults in my family were eating. My kids grew up eating Thai food, Chinese, Indian, Mexican, spicy, vegetables, WHATEVER I was cooking. I didn't make a big deal about it. I just put it in front of them the same way I would pizza or hot dogs. I didn't praise them for eating the vegetables. I didn't reward them for cleaning their plates. It was probably more laziness on my part than actual knowledge on making intuitive eaters. I had friends who would say their kids only ate french fries and chicken nugget, and I just didn't want that to be my reality. So did my kids sometimes barely pick at the food? Yep. But do they all now (as teenagers) eat a vast variety of foods? Absolutely. I agree that making ALL foods neutral is important, I just never thought of it in that way while I was doing it. Haha

I've always personally felt when observing the parents around me, when parents say things like "she just won't eat anything but this, I don't know why" it's 1000% because they allowed the behavior one too many times and never taught their kids to eat well. I feel like we are seeing a huge shift in the rhetoric about raising kids and I hope the rhetoric around feeling children changes as well.

Honestly, I think it's a kind of trendy thing. I don't actually get it. Unless you are do hellavu workouts, you don't really need it either in most cases. Peanut or other nut butter, yogurt, white beans, cow or soy milk are all things that can go in smoothies.

I actually had a really hard time finding toddler multivitamin gummies that included iron - because kids CAN easily get enough in their diet so they don't want you to overdose them with iron while that young. But mines allergic to dairy, soy, egg whites and peanut butter. So our pediatrician told us it was really important to find one with iron to make up for what he wasn't able to eat. And I was shocked how hard it was to find. (We went with the squiggles brand. He loves them)

Yah! A new Abbey video! I love your level-headed approach to food. :) It's interesting to hear a reference to raspberry leaf tea! I drink it to get relief from menstrual cramps. I can't take Ibuprefen/Alieve/Asprin (makes my colon ulcers bleed), and hormonal birth control makes me intensely nauseated. After I drink the tea, the reduction in severe cramps is small, but I have few options. The tea is super cheap, and I take it with honey. :-D

Love your content, Abbey. Could you do a vid on diet and endometriosis? 1/10 ppl with a uterus have this progressive, incurable and sometimes debilitating condition. It takes years to diagnose (longer if you’re POC) and is often misdiagnosed as crohn’s, IBS, or other GI conditions because of its impact on digestive health. Diet is often one of the few tools endo sufferers have to improve their quality of life, but there’s so much info out there it can be confusing and hard to maintain. It’d be great to see some content on this, as it would help approx 10% of your uterus-having audience 💛

I like the ideal of putting greens on the platter without forcing them to eat it. Back in the 60's when I was a kid, our babysitter made us eat every bite and you did not leave the table until you did. . I didn't like squash, sauerkraut, and Chop Suey, an canned food - chestnuts made me throw up in. my plate. Even today, I have to force myself to eat veggies - I put them in a smoothie and down the hatch. Meat based diet or keto or paleo - mostly protein works for me - some veggies and fruit a small amount. Food allergies dictate what I eat. Again, I love your philosophy on teaching kids to try things without forcing them and I hope the young mother's children do not get eating disorders like I have had to deal with - Moderation doesn't work for me but I think the little will be able to do moderation - desserts. I like that ideal the placing a small cookie on the platter without making a big deal that it is dessert and that you don't have to eat your veggies before you get dessert. Love this.

I just found out about the whole gummy vitamin thing. lol. I am currently pregnant and my doctor told me she didn't advise it. She is allowing me to finish for the first trimester (it has ben rough) and then after that I am switching! Aspyn is actually the reason I am going to do baby led weaning! I have been so impressed. I also worked at a job where we fed the babies normal food (unless parents signs up for baby food) and I was always impressed. So good for their development of their throat muscles and of course fine motor skills. The only thing I am unsure of is when to introduce meat since they never introduced it to Cove.

Having done a deep dive on heavy metals in plant protein powders, the science doesn't support there being a risk of exposure more than just eating vegetables in their whole form. Could you provide your reference material for this? I'm hoping it's not anything from the Clean Label Project, who do not provide data for their study, won't disclose who they are funded by, offer certification services for a fee, and have been heavily scrutinized by the NSF.

Wish I had found a video like this earlier! I'm currently in my third trimester, and have had protein powder on a fairly regular basis throughout my pregnancy - I didn't even consider that could be an issue, but will definitely be cutting it now. Have been taking a fish oil supplement intermittently (when I haven't been too nauseous), but would have made that a higher priority too, had I known just how beneficial it is! I feel like I've done so much reading on what to eat and not to eat in pregnancy, yet there is always more information out there.

Hi-occupational therapist here! Definitely suggest gradual exposure: play with toys with different textures or things like a dry pasta or rice bin. If they won’t touch it, they won’t put it in their mouth! When it comes to eventually working with food, put the food on the plate first, let them touch it and play with it when they’re ready, and continue gradually exposing them while not making it a big deal. Consider seeing an occupational or speech therapist if you’re looking for more help with feeding and sensory concerns!

Fun story: I'm fun Trinidad where sea moss is quite popular flavour option in a milk-based beverage we call punch. It's somewhere in between a smoothie and a milkshake in terms of nutrition/sweetness. I love it myself. However, it's absolutely not at all a fancy ingredient. I googled sea moss just because one day and absolutely died at 1) how expensive it is and 2) how it's become one of these "health foods" in wellness spaces

Hi Abbey, what is your opinion on working out and eating along with your cycle. I see a lot of stuff online about eating certain types of foods (easily digestable, fiber rich etc) or choosing your workouts (vigorous or relaxed) based on which phase of your cycle you’re in. It really speaks to me but idk if it’s heathy.
