I grew up in the 90's and loved this track from Enigma. It wasn't until today that I found out who that man's voice belongs to. Beautiful. *EDIT:* I love how Difang and his wife's (Igay) voice compliment each other. I lack the musical vocabulary/terminology to explain it well but it's such a unique sound.

Thank you for acknowledging Igay’s part, her complex and challenging solo and harmonies are a huge part if what gave the original recording its magic, even if she is backgrounded here. Bad enough to go unacknowledged by Enigma /. EMI originally when they have generously recorded for a research project. But to even have her part completely ignored and obscured by the people who uploaded this, who knew the story is unforgiveable.

It was the record label that did it. Enigma argued with them to have them credited, but the label overturned it and these two were lost. I had no idea they existed and I clearly missed out, I only found out about them when I was researching where my Puerto Rican ancestors originated from, and the Amis and the Taino are distant cousins. ❤

These are the Amis aboriginals whose ancestors have lived in Taiwan (Formosa) for thousands of years before the Chinese and European migration to Taiwan. They are Austronesian which is a culture distinct from Chinese. It's very important to preserve the aboriginal cultures as many have become extinct over the last 400 years.

Difang Duana (1921--2002) and Igay Duana (1922--2002), Chinese names Kuo Ying-nan and Kuo Hsiu-chu, were an Amis husband-and-wife folk music duet from Taiwan who specialized in traditional Amis chants. They are internationally known for their performance of a traditional Amis Palang song, "Weeding and Paddyfield Song No. 1", "Elders' Drinking Song", and "Jubilant Drinking Song", which was plagiarized by the French government and EMI, later used by Enigma for their hit single Return to Innocence.

+ Johnson Valiant It's strange how minority groups are looked down upon and have to fight for their rights to preserve their own culture. It seems to be the same all over the world. In my country, Norway, the minority the Samis aka Laps have had to fight this same fight. When a "primitive" culture meets a more technically advanced culture - it's usually "the primitive" that has to give way. I'm happy to say that in the northern parts of Scandinavia this trend of opression in the last decades have changed. Much thanks to the minority themselves that has become more open and including and better to express their different cultures. I believe the minorities themself can do much to help themselves by beeing more willing to explain and present their culture. It's easier to be negative to something that you know little about and don't understand.

@@tomrogerlilleby2890 , very true, even in Europe, not just eastern Europe (as in Russia, denying and pretending to absorb Ukraine), but also northern, western and southern Europe (like Spain to this day colonizing Catalonia and trying its best to destroy it in every possible way). Western culture is always and everywhere a colonial and thieving culture. They have not only exploited the underground and aboveground resources of all societies in the world, but also stolen their traditions, songs, values, science, in other words everything. And they continue to do so. Enigma is just one of thousands of examples. Western civilization is a virus for other traditional societies in the world. Just as they destroyed the Native American tribes, only enough struggle has saved them from doing the same to all other nations in the world. Every society must protect its own values and keep the new generations alert against the Western threat. We Turks have a proverb that goes like this: "Water sleeps, but the enemy does not sleep."

I heard about this over a decade ago, but I most recently am finding out my mom's "mysterious," family history. She married into my dad's Taiwanese Hokkien family, so I am very aware of my dad's side. I knew that my mom's dad came onto the mainland as part of the KMT, but as a kid I never really knew too much about my mom's bio mom side. Long story short - as she's gotten older, she took us to Hualien and we watched the Ami's perform pre-pandemic. And most recently she had share the tragic story of how her father demanded to marry a girl from Hualien side, but because he valued having a boy, he sent her to live with a caring couple who also fled from Jianxi province to live in Taiwan. One of my aunties confirmed that my mom's bio mom is Indigenous. Born and raised in the US - East Asians are seen as a monolith, and growing up in the US I remember listening to this song, and it hits differently knowing that I am part Taiwanese aboriginal and mixed feelings of joy and sadness that although I was not raised with Amis traditions - because of Enigma's shady sampling - I was able to benefit and hear my people's songs.

Ha! You see the soul wakes up to the sounds of heaven unlike the flesh only responds to lusts, feelings etc.., that’s why the spirit of man is the watcher of his soul

Lived in Taiwan for over 15-years. My son was born there. Blessed are we to hear such rare music. Di Fang and his wife, rare jewels.

Cara que lindo isso, a base original do Return To Innocence, tão natural...parece uma oração ou um mantra, muito bonito, é de fechar os olhos e viajar nos pensamentos.

Honestly, the chant combined with the drums and synth reminds me so much of Susumu Hirasawa's work

Damn Ive been looking for this song for quite some time. I am in 7th grade and I heard this when I was in kindergarten. That was until I realized that I was listening to return to the innocence the whole entire time. Glad that I am able to hear both songs now

It's really a shame that Enigma didn't credit them for the vocal sample they used. Return to Innocence is basically a rip of this song.

After the court case the singer, difang, was compensated out of court and given a writers credit.

They thought it wasn't copyrighted.
@BuzzaB777 жыл бұрын
anyone inside music (industry or otherwise) knows that all music younger than 75 years is copyrighted, the cd he sampled it from was a 1989 recording they knew full well, they just tried to get away with it.
@VitalMusic2177 жыл бұрын
So if you hear a tribal song you think it`s copyrighted? I wouldn´t.
@BuzzaB777 жыл бұрын
not the written song, the recording. there are 2 types of music copyright. recorded and written(published) . the fact that a recording was made means that someone owns the copyright for that recording.
