Diff'rent Strokes is an American sitcom that aired on NBC from November 3, 1978, to May 4, 1985, and on ABC from September 27, 1985, to March 7, 1986. The series stars Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges as Arnold and Willis Jackson, two African American boys from Harlem who are taken in by a rich white Park Avenue businessman and widower named Phillip Drummond (Conrad Bain) and his daughter Kimberly (Dana Plato), for whom their deceased mother previously worked. During the first season and first half of the second season, Charlotte Rae also starred as the Drummonds' housekeeper, Mrs. Garrett (who ultimately spun off into her own successful show, The Facts of Life).
The series made stars out of child actors Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, and Dana Plato and became known for the "very special episodes" in which serious issues such as racism, illegal drug use, and child sexual abuse were dramatically explored.
The lives of these stars were later plagued by legal troubles and drug addiction. In 1994, Coleman appeared in an episode of Married... with Children, playing a building code inspector whom Al Bundy called to report an illegal driveway. When Kelly recognizes him, he denies any connection to Arnold Jackson, but utters his catchphrase to Al, "What'chu talkin' about, Bundy?". Also, in 1996, Coleman and Bain reprised their roles for the series finale of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air entitled "I, Done Part 2". In their scene, they reference Willis by name before meeting Will Smith's character, leading to Coleman uttering a variation of his catchphrase, "What'chu talkin' about, Willis?".
Following the cancellation of Diff'rent Strokes, Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, and Dana Plato encountered difficulty in obtaining acting jobs. All three experienced various legal problems while Bridges and Plato also struggled with drug addictions, all of which were documented in the press. The press and fans of the series blamed the cast's personal problems and faltering careers on what was eventually dubbed the "curse of Diff'rent Strokes" by various tabloids.

Along with "The Cosby Show", we watched this all the time! Living in North West London in the early 1980's, I was already in a multicultural society, so none of this seemed strange and I think what appealed about bothy shows was the terrific comedy and humour in them. Regardless of how things have changed (For better or worse), these shows are still quite easy to watch.

One of the greatest television shows of all time. I loved it. Never missed an episode. You can tell that when the show moved from NBC to ABC and Charlotte Rae left the show, that the show was on its last legs. But, still a classic. We lost pretty much everyone who starred on the show. May they all rest in peace. Conrad Bain, Dana Plato, Gary Coleman, Charlotte Rae, and Dixie Carter.

The theme tune lyrics went completely over my head as a kid... as did the 'Good Times' theme tune. I loved this show, Gary Coleman was hilarious as Arnold, such a shame he passed away young. Tragedy followed Dana Plato too, life went really wrong for her and sadly led to an early death.(accidental OD or suicide depending on which report you read) & as far as I'm aware, following the passing of Charlotte Rae, Todd Bridges is now the only surviving regular cast member. Arnolds "What'chu talkin bout Willis?" catchphrase was a big fave of us 80's kids though.

Well, the sitcoms they do have don't have theme songs. I don't remember one since the 90's. And the only one I can remember that lasted into the 00's is Friends. I can sing most of the 80's sitcom themes plus The Live Boat's theme song. But this was my favorite sitcom from the late 70-80's. It is my first "love" of sitcoms, I was born in '75. The 90's-80's were so sad seeing all the kids just start losing in life in different ways. The most surprising things from it all is one, Conrad Bain out lived Gary and Dana & two, that Todd Bridges outlived them all considering his life 25 years ago or so when he was hooked on drugs and such. He will be 55 this year. Keep on keeping on Todd!

I wish we only had theme songs to worry about, the writing for family shows is ridiculously stupid. Everything has to have an agenda, the sitcom era is long gone, the last good sitcom was Friends.
