It should be mentioned that everyone, without exception, speaks with an accent. And everyone speaks their native tongue in some particular dialect.

I’ve always thought that the difference between accent and dialect was : If you can understand it, it’s an accent. If not, it’s a dialect. But perhaps I was wrong.

That's an interesting perspective!

There are actually some accents of English that you can’t understand, even native ones! It’s not because of the vocabulary and grammar being used, but because it f the pronunciation.

So let me ask this. I am Persian, but I grew up in the USA. When I speak Farsi, I do so with an American accent and other Persians who grew up in Iran can tell, but we still understand each other. Once I tried speaking Farsi with someone from Tajikistan, but I couldn't understand him at all despite us speaking the same language with a few different word variations. Is this an accent vs dialect situation?

I'm still a bit confused.. in the case of English, we say American an British accent despite of the fact that the difference between the two is more than just pronunciation ( grammar, vocabulary...) Why don't we say American and British dialect?
@AzeLinguistics3 жыл бұрын
You can say that too. However, when you say 'accent' rather than 'dialect', you're emphasizing the phonological aspects.

Because most people are not well versed in linguistics. In my experience most people use the word "accent" when they are talking about a dialect.

i am not ok with the definition in this video, for me, accent is something related to foreigners and not native speakers, as for example, speaking english with a russian accent.

Isn't that why 'accent' is sometimes qualified with 'foreign' and referred to as 'foreign accent'?
