Retired CWO4 BOSN (as of 01OCT20) here, pick the rate you would enjoy the most. Just remember for every “cool” thing you see on a video there’s lots of uncool things you won’t see. If you want to be in charge and have a larger pool of different opportunities then BM, MK type rates are great. If you prefer more of a standard job the YN or SK, etc are for you. If you don’t ever want to get underway, please for the love of God, stay OUT of the CG!

So what do you do while you’re waiting? Say you go to Boot Camp, you put me on your sheet, get through Boot Camp, then you wait for years? Sorry for the novice question, I’m new to the Coast Guard.

If you don’t see yourself as being an OIC then don’t go BM. Have that honest conversation with yourself. BM is a command rate.

Yes! There’s roughly 160 people on the ME list at the moment. But it is currently closed to anyone looking to put their name on. The wait time is roughly 24 months! Hope this helps

They usually lead the small boat crews I think from what my dad who served who was a BM told me that you’re basically squad leader and boarding crew which is awesome to me, and you drive the small boats

BMs and MKs were getting LE done and being masters of it LONG before ME was a consideration. BM is the greatest rate. Small boat coxswain, SAR lead, LE lead, etc. MEs are a great rate and all, but NOT the only way to get to the operational LE realm. BM or MK are better not only because they're traditional in nature, but they are needed and virtually everywhere. Be ready to really WORK as a BM or MK! None of that 'passenger' stuff that some rates (like ME) do. BM and MK are the coast guardiest of coast guard rates.

Well, as a former CG Electronic Technician and MLE boarding officer, I would say that ET is by far the best rate. I absolutely loved my time in the USCG. It created incredible opportunities.

@@silenciummortum2193 I'm just retired BM for 20 years. Depends on what unit you go to (cutter, station, msst, msrt, taclet, hvy wx station, etc. You will definitely be a boat crewman and coxswain and boarding officer/Boarding team member. That's your bread and butter. The rest is collateral. Wepo, OOD, RSS, etc...well maybe not OOD, you will definitely end up qualifying as OOD as well. Jack of all traits. The one thing i don't regret about being a BM is there are so many options and places to pic compared to many other rates. I used to have guys out of boot that wanted to go ME for the law enforcement. I just gladly pointed in the small boat being lowered to conduct LE missions and asked if they see any ME's in that crew lol. It was all BM's and MK's. I've had a few really cool ME's that actually did sh*t. The rest just sat in the armory and did training on holiday routine when all we wanted to do was enjoy a day off. That's just my 2 cents from experience.

MEs, BMs, and MKs most likely. If you’re thinking about joining and want to go solely for LE (Law Enforcement) like drug and migrant interdiction. Go BM or MK period. Those are the best rates to do LE. Not ME. And ME list is closed and the projected wait times is 2+ years.
