If you have a college degree before going into any branch then by all means go the officer route if the opportunity presents itself. I went directly to OTS with a degree in finance (investments, banking etc) they made me a POL officer and I loved it! Simple equation was I took care of my troops and they took care of me. I did their taxes, got them on separate rations, kept them off CQ duty and got them hats that said POL not Supply Sqdn. One hand washed the other! Had great NCOs everywhere I went except one and he had enough 'juice' at TAC Hq to bail out before I had to write an APR. Was in from '63 to '84. In this time frame I never had a man (no women in POL, had to be 5'9" and 160 pounds) with a four year degree.

Long story short if you join the coastguard looking for law enforcement (BM)-“Boatswains mate” is the road to go if you want to be in charge of a unit and be the boss maritime enforcement is the road to go

I was pleased with myself for writing a good score on the ASVAB (this was early 1987). My CG recruiter let me know that the test was tailored for people who had a solid 8th grade education. At that time I had a couple of years of college under my belt. I went on to become an FT in the Coast Guard. It wasn't too many years later that I discovered that I made an extremely bad career move. The Coast Guard hated FTs and only tolerated us due to receiving NAVORD (Navy Ordnance) money. I cannot think of a worse job in the CG than being a MK92 FCS technician on a '270 ('Famous' Class) cutter.

I’ve got one question: why do they say Coast Guard is #1? Someone just told me the army is the chain of command. So I’m wondering what’s meant by the people saying “coast guard is #1”

It’s great to see chief lakose again. I shipped in with India-204 but fell out of company just before indoc weekend, after getting squared away at medical I formed back up with the company as they went to go to their squad at but was told to hang back because I’d be splitting off to rhe. My seabag’s straps had other plans however and came undone and dropped off me and I had to take a moment to resecure it but fell behind 30 yards or so from the formation. Upon chief seeing me he had a strong word with one of the other cc’s there about how they managed to let someone slip out without noticing it, but then came back and made sure everything was alright and when I tried to explain to him my strap busted on me in broken and heavy breathing recruit speak, he just told me not to worry about it…. It felt so human for a moment after a long weekend of stress and fuckups. He was the same guy who was chastising me being an idiot and asking if I could go look for my lock combs paper after I lost it or something, it’s been long enough I’ve forgotten lol. I really liked him, cc’s often times are people I found myself looking up to despite the job of having to be a hardass. Senior Chief Libstaff was another one I looked up to, as well as Petty Officer Demond especially. Demond made RHE into such a great program given the circumstances and I kinda regret not sandbagging an extra week in RHE to join him in Mike-204 in hindsight, but oh well. It’s because of my experience with some amazing cc’s that despite my first go around being rough and ultimately 8 weeks of being tossed around in the system a bit, I’ve been told by the chief at my recruiting office to wait a year to the day before coming back to reenlist, so I plan on doing exactly that.

Served on two 270’s in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Don’t eat breakfast the morning of your first patrol. Most likely you’re going to be in the head up chucking it shortly after getting underway!🤮

The running joke when I was in ‘90-‘94 was if you can’t make rate then boatswain mate. I left as a QM2 before the rate was absorbed into OS/BM. Back then BM was a deck force rating whereas QM was the bridge/nav job.
