im thinking about it, honestly. i want to do something where i can hone my skills. i have a background in science and data, and i want to do something more fulfilling. and honestly, i dont really see myself sitting in an office job. but the coast guard, it seems like something up my alley, honestly. helping people, that sounds very fulfilling work for me. but like, idk if it is too late. im 28. almost 29. and like, ive worked a couple of jobs in office setting. and i really dont see myself doing office work indefinitely. but doing something like the coast guard, it sounds like my calling. but like, idk if my family would be on board bc like i dont want them to feel like everything i did with school was a waste. bc i have two bachelors and a masters, and so like, i guess i want to know, is there career advancement if you already started your career journey? like, for me, someone with a science and data background, would there be a way for me to grow and advance in the coast guard if i join?

ET’s work on updated equipment as well as major weapons systems. I feel like making the judgement off the base definition does not capture the breadth of what any rate does but more so engineering jobs. As and ET I have done weapons, nav, comms, IT, GM, BM. ITs tend to be sheltered and your review of IT was significantly longer than any review of any other rate.

Dunno if stretching out from three weeks to four weeks will help at all. At the end of the day the purpose of the DEPOT program was to bring real world skills, LEO, Firefighters, prior serivce, etc. to quickly be trained and added to the reserve command and supplement active duty. If you keep stretching it out you might find yourself with diminishing numbers in recruting and creeping up on the eight week program. Many other branches have agumented boot camps for prior service etc. with the same goals in mind. Just some food for thought. My DEPOT experience was fair and I was prior service. Overall the concept of the DEPOT program is sound. Good video!

Coast guard is not the best service. I did 8 years in the coast guard and i experienced the WORST TOXIC LEADERSHIPS ever inmagined. As a Coast Guard veteran you'll get absolutely no support whats so ever. Now im basically homeless live off unemployment for years. My friends joined marines, army, and navy for 6 years and their branch helped them transition into civilian life with secured jobs while coast guard toss me out like trash. I reach out to coast guard several times for support and they literally blocked me or ignored me. Im a extremely nice guy and hardworking and yet i get no support from Coast Guard. Join any other service but coast guard. Coast Guard has absolutely no comradery.

The shortage is real. Auxiliary are sole presence at closed Coast Guard stations. They might as well convert Auxiliary back to the reserves. Instead, getting free labor from civilians to run stations.

Son is due to finish boot camp here soon as a non-rate with hopes to land a BM A-School. He has yet to call home and let us know his first duty station. Regardless of where (cutter, small boat station, ice breaker) he has a car and can't fathom the idea of not bringing it with him to his first duty station. Any issues here? Thank you.
