An easy QC check to be sure the oven baked conversion is complete is to put a couple cups of the processed soda in a hot pot. If any Baking Soda remains, a little steam and tiny geysers of CO2 will be seen. When hot powder over 250 degrees F shows no escaping gas it is fully converted. An infrared thermometer is your friend. To see the difference put baking soda in a hot pot and gently stir. The little eruptions of CO2 will be obvious as you gently stir. Be sure to wear a dust mask.

I used to clean houses professionally and I LOVE washing soda. I use it to clean in a bucket of dish soap and it removes grime like magic. Makes your job so much easier. I have also used it to make laundry detergent. Instead of grating the soap with a cheese grater, just cube it and add it to your blender with some of the powder. It will blend into the powder wonderfully. Oh I see she uses the blender as well. What if you blend it with the baking soda instead and then mix in the washing soda. Could also wear a mask while doing this. We all have masks now...

Question: can washing soda be used as a compromise between baking soda and lye when making pretzels? I love making soft pretzels and parboil them in water with baking soda for about a minute. A lot of recipes use a lye dip, which has a ph of 14. Could washing soda be used as a kind of middle ground? This is before baking and just to give the pretzel that dark exterior and unique taste.

Arm and Hammer seem to have fallen victim to the Supply Chain Issues. That is why most can not find the "Washing Soda". Everywhere here is out locally. Yes, I can get the same 3 Lbs of "Baking Soda" for less than three dollars. Yet, the Box of Washing Soda vs DIY cost is less for me. However, I am going to have to do the DIY on the grid, soon I can do it on the wood stove, I hope. I use ZOTE Flakes, Borax, Baking Soda, and Washing Soda, and some scent crystals for my detergent. I have had to look at using some other things as alternatives till the supply chain issues settle down. I have found using a 5 gallon bucket with a lid - tight lid. Doing a Tumbler effect, and mixing it all, and doing it all outside, and letting it settle for hours before opening and wearing a mask when handling is best. I am going to start putting my final product - detergent - in Quart glass jars, so it will not become a solid block. I mean you use only 2 tablespoons per load, and may even use moisture removal and oxygen absorbers too. For longer term storage. Who knew that Toilet Paper, and Laundry Detergent would be the in such short supply. Always think ahead. Plan ahead. I keep a washboard, and zote bars, and wash pails too.
