Thanks for the information, I think I'll go for a N55 for my next BMW as I want to get a M2 I can work on myself, I am not a drifter so I think it will be satisfactory. The S55 sounds overly complicated with more failure points, admittedly it would be cool to have more power but I like to be realistic.

what does being a drifter or not have to do with the engines tho

GREAT VIDEO! You have balls! The last time I tried to explain the differences between the S55 and N55 to owners of the N55 I literally got all kinds of profane comments stating I didnt know what I was talking about. People have this belief that you can buy the cheaper alternative and achieve better results than the more expensive model without doing extensive upgrades. Rule of thumb: engineers get paid larger salaries than we do to increase hp in todays cars reliably and the companies charge you for the extra engineering. There are a lot more differences than you explained in the engineering of the entire S55 F80. You are right it would take you an hour to explain them. Lol

Hi everybody, just a note- the N55 does not have a forged crankshaft in MOST applications. There are a couple exceptions including the M2, F26 M40i (yes, the X4 did NOT initially use a B58) which have truly forged steel cranks, along with the Alpina variants. The M235i, LCI M135 (and ActiveHybrid 3 if anyone gives a shit or owns one) are oddballs... They have cranks that are made from a stronger steel, rather than the iron in the other N55 variants. if you have a 135, 335, 435, 535, 640, X3, X4, X5, or X6 with an N55, you have a cast crank. This is a common misunderstanding, and I see how easily this info can be confused so I don't fault you for it. It's just worth knowing if you are trying to build these engines, it's what I do for a living. Thanks for reading!

BMW actually put a N55 in a M car which was the M2 and its predecessor the 1M had the N54 another M car without the S engine designation. Then you read the forums about people saying the 1M got a N54 for a reason and the 335is. But in stock form the N54 is more capable. The M2 became a true M car to me once they fitted it with a S55. For my ranking of these engines its S58>B58>S55>N54>N55 because reliable power means everything! Only setback is the S55 crankhub if you fixed that you can move it passed the B58.

I went from M235i to M4. I honestly don't see a big difference in performance at lower gears. The problem I have on my M4 is that the torque down low is so much that it overwhelms the traction. Once it's moving though it has more of a pull. I'm sure on a track or autobahn or something, the M4 would be much more noticeable in power. But practically, on the streets, from what I remember, my little M235i was still really quick. Love my M4. But I'd like a go in my old M235i again, back to back.
