Thanks for the information, I think I'll go for a N55 for my next BMW as I want to get a M2 I can work on myself, I am not a drifter so I think it will be satisfactory. The S55 sounds overly complicated with more failure points, admittedly it would be cool to have more power but I like to be realistic.

@@alexandreromao8410 S55 don't get the oil starvation from drifting like the N55 does. You can change the sump to stop this problem. It's not like it's an immediate failure point but it can lead to bearing problems.

GREAT VIDEO! You have balls! The last time I tried to explain the differences between the S55 and N55 to owners of the N55 I literally got all kinds of profane comments stating I didnt know what I was talking about. People have this belief that you can buy the cheaper alternative and achieve better results than the more expensive model without doing extensive upgrades. Rule of thumb: engineers get paid larger salaries than we do to increase hp in todays cars reliably and the companies charge you for the extra engineering. There are a lot more differences than you explained in the engineering of the entire S55 F80. You are right it would take you an hour to explain them. Lol

Hi everybody, just a note- the N55 does not have a forged crankshaft in MOST applications. There are a couple exceptions including the M2, F26 M40i (yes, the X4 did NOT initially use a B58) which have truly forged steel cranks, along with the Alpina variants. The M235i, LCI M135 (and ActiveHybrid 3 if anyone gives a shit or owns one) are oddballs... They have cranks that are made from a stronger steel, rather than the iron in the other N55 variants. if you have a 135, 335, 435, 535, 640, X3, X4, X5, or X6 with an N55, you have a cast crank. This is a common misunderstanding, and I see how easily this info can be confused so I don't fault you for it. It's just worth knowing if you are trying to build these engines, it's what I do for a living. Thanks for reading!

BMW actually put a N55 in a M car which was the M2 and its predecessor the 1M had the N54 another M car without the S engine designation. Then you read the forums about people saying the 1M got a N54 for a reason and the 335is. But in stock form the N54 is more capable. The M2 became a true M car to me once they fitted it with a S55. For my ranking of these engines its S58>B58>S55>N54>N55 because reliable power means everything! Only setback is the S55 crankhub if you fixed that you can move it passed the B58.

I went from M235i to M4. I honestly don't see a big difference in performance at lower gears. The problem I have on my M4 is that the torque down low is so much that it overwhelms the traction. Once it's moving though it has more of a pull. I'm sure on a track or autobahn or something, the M4 would be much more noticeable in power. But practically, on the streets, from what I remember, my little M235i was still really quick. Love my M4. But I'd like a go in my old M235i again, back to back.

It's crazy! 3) From a maintenance DIY perspective, I just did my VCG on the N55, (very straight forward) and hope to hell I never have fuel delivery or cooling issues with my S55. Lastly, based on how beefed up and protected the S55 is, I'm going to run it hard now and not worry about. And the N55...our relaxing cruiser. Nice work.

You quoted the bore and stroke for the S55 as 89.6 x 80mm this gives 3,026cc. Something wrong there. :) N55 B & S 84 x 89.6 gives 2979cc ....correct.

Did you just said N55 share the same forged crank and rods just like S55?!
@4lifeifly
@4lifeifly 4 жыл бұрын
All N55s have forged rods, a few (maybe just one?) varients have a forged crank as well.
@kaiwenjiang3917
@kaiwenjiang3917 4 жыл бұрын
@@4lifeifly really most of n55 does not have forged crank lol they are cast, and even for the best n55 on m2 the piston are freaking same when you dismantled them.

The noobs complaining that an s55 will cost more to maintain, are the same dudes that drive around all day with a check engine light in there N54. If you're able to afford this car, you should be able to afford the maintenance.

@dwagner453

That’s because the S55’s crankshaft is forged and the n55’s is cast iron and same with the connecting rods
@RB-xv4si

Devin Wagner that’s not correct. The standard N55B30M0 has a cast crankshaft, which is actually 2.2 lbs lighter than the S55 version. However the forged steel crankshaft in the N5530B0 (M235i) is the one I was referring to in the original comment. That particular crank is 4 lbs heavier than the S55 crankshaft. This information is pulled right from the S55 technical training manual. Maybe I should have been more specific in my first comment.

s55 is a track/racing engine n55 is daily/street regular car engine. s55 can withstand more but is also more expensive in repairing/maintaining. Judging the fact that n55 cars are half the price of s55 I am happily owning my 640i with n55 XD
