Crank hub definitely a hustle....I have 125,000 plus miles and haven't had any crank hub issues....fuel pump and injectors did go out at 110k....have been on a stage 2 tune and 100octane tune for yrs
@topfueljunkie100 Жыл бұрын
How much did the pump and injectors cost you? I know they got quite pricy (like $3k) for a set for the N54 so I wondered how bad it is for the S55. Thanks

Regarding the different "versions" of the S55, they all use the same long block and accessories. Other than the use of water injection in the M4 GTS, the difference between them is the tune.

Spinning of the crank hub comes from mashing the throttle in high gear (5,6,7) and having the kick down feature activate, jumping you to a lower gear (2,3,4). Just avoid this and you’ll be fine (terrible for the car anyways).
@TheSundaeDrive2 жыл бұрын
Well done video. As a performance shop that does a ton of bmw work, we normally recommend building the engine if you plan to go past 700ish whp/torque to be on the safe side. It normally takes e85 or meth in combination with a hybrid turbo to get there. Also, while spun crank hubs are less common on unmodified cars, the more power you push the more risk you take. If you are staying stock, probably can keep the stock crank hub.

Now my question is do I need to change my OEM intercooler to a CSF or any aftermarket dual pass charge air cooler? and I dont track this car but just drive it daily and drive it spiritedly and fast. I think that there wasn’t a 360hp version of the S55. The early M2 used the N55 engine and not the S55. It’s when the M2 competition came along with S55 that they started to produce 410 hp. I’m pretty sure about the engines that were used in M2 and M2 competition, but not sure about the power outputs. Maybe they are slightly less or more.

@@cwx8 this is correct. All S55 motors have that ridiculous 3 piece design held together by friction plates and a crank bolt. "other things" includes leaking top mount intercooler into your cylinders. And by that I mean it can literally seize your engine. I came this close to selling the car 2 months after I bought it because it would always stutter at high speeds and then eventually got to the point where I couldn't drive it at all. I took it to BMW for them to do their stupid fucking multipoint inspection. They told me "all good." Clearly it wasn't. They said, "change cylinders 3 & 6 plugs and coils for $1500." Told them to shove it and give me back my car. The plugs were brand new. Long story short, I wasn't convinced it had anything to do electronically. I then did a ton of research to find out the top mount intercooler will leak directly into your cylinders and cause serious damage. When I finally almost wore myself out, I worked up the nerve to buy a brand new intercooler online and install it as a "hail mary." I even told my family if this doesn't work, i'm done with the car. As I was installing it, there was about 16oz of coolant standing in my J-pipe right below the throttle body. I drained every single drop, cleaned it, shop vac'd it, ran engine cleaner through it (twice) and got all the residual coolant out. Now, it runs like a dream. My point is, if you have a stock S55, KEEP YOUR EYE ON THAT STUPID INTERCOOLER RESERVOIR!! If it gets low, top it off and see how long it takes to drain. If it drains DO NOT HESITATE to buy a brand new metal one!! Those stock intercoolers are GARBAGE! They will destroy your motor!

Completely wrong it’s not pre 2016 models it’s all S55 models I know of three post 2018 models that have spun crank hubs, it’s not blown out of proportion quite a lot of units that are running increased power have spun and as that’s most S55 units now then the amount will only increase. I’m speaking from real world experience of this engine over thousands of miles running stock power, stage1,2 and now stage 3 plus at 700bhp with Meth and running 4.9-5.1 second 100-200 times. Intakes do nothing for the S55 in fact most reduce power, even at stage3 stock air boxes with K&N or MMR filters are best.
