Different Dendrobium Orchids, different care requirements

One of the species of Orchids that is ever surprising for me is the Dendrobium. Just when you think you found a pattern, things change again :) Here are a few of my Dendrobiums and their different care requirements.
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
Deciduous Dendrobium species are usually those who benefit from a winter rest, a distinct change in care that especially refers to watering and temperature. Now one might conclude that deciduous orchids will all take this rest, but as it turns out this is not the case. One of the deciduous species I have is the victoria reginae, which loses leaves, but doesn't take a winter rest and prefers even watering all year round.
The Dendrobium parishii, even if deciduous, require different watering regimes in winter, in the rest period. So being deciduous is not a determining factor when it comes to this aspect of their care.
When we reffer to hybrids things can get even trickier, particularly when we have a hybrid between a rest taking orchid and a continuous grower. We can even encounter individuals of the same variety that will act different and require slightly different care.
Thus it is a good idea to research about our orchids and even learn what others have experienced with this orchid, this way we can at least have an idea of what to expect. Other than that, it's trial and error :)

Hi Danny! I have a recommendation, I would appreciate if you can put pictures in a corner of the video the flower of the plant you are talking about. Is to visualize what plants you are talking about. The people that don't know the plants by name would really like it. Keep up the good videos, take care! 😁

Thank you for doing this video! I had the same question, as some of my Dends are still putting out new growths. I was told to keep watering anyhow, even if they are supposed to be resting. I have a Vic. reginae and it's really pretty when it blooms- if it's in brighter light, the bluer it gets! I'm still learning about that one too... Good luck with yours! :)

Hi, indeed when new growth is involved the orchid spends energy into it and it should be offered water. It might be out of season now that is all :)

Hi Dani, I watched your Dendrobium video and I found it very helpful. I just bought my first Dendrobium and I'm a little worried because I've never owned one before. I'll be watching all your Dendrobium videos, because I don't want to kill this one. I haven't killed an orchid for a long time and I don't want to start now. By the way, what was the orchid app you were talking about? I don't see the video for that. Thanks for the great videos!

Hello Miss Orchid Girl. I have a dendrobium victoria reginae (Queen Victoria orchid) that is in sad shape. The roots rotted, and I am not sure how to encourage it to grow more roots. It shot out a few new keikis out of the sides (around 6 or 7), and they all shriveled up. What do you think I should do? Any info you can provide would certainly be appreciated :)

I recently bought my first Orchid. It is labeled Dendrobium Orquidea! It was in a pot without drain holes! It was saturated in water! I immediately drained all the excess water out! That being said, it looks healthy! It has 4 stalks but had had all of its bloom stalks cut off. Should I repot? Should I use the same mosses it is currently in? What type of medium do I need? First orchid momma!!!

Heya! Thank you for your video! I have young dendrobium but I can't find any information about its care whatsoever. It's called the dendrobium banglane sunset and even though I water it every 8 days or so, every time I do, it loses a leaf :S (it turns yellow and falls off) I keep it ventilated and check that there's no residual water, etc etc but it's as if the orchid simply doesn't want water. I checked your videos and I think it's some kind of den-phal so no winter rest. I don't know what to do :S Could you help me, please? Should I send you a picture of the orchid? Thank you for reading!

I've got an dendrobium orchid and I can't identify what kind it is. since this is the winter, it doesn't take a winter rest and yet it starts to give new growths. What I am really concerned about is that most of the new growths are healthy with roots but they are maroon color or red and brown color. I water a little bit every morning since it dries out fast. Now these orchids I got are two to three inches. The leaves do snap like a Phal but one of them has a flower growing on the opposite side of the leaf. Maybe this might be a hybrid between a nobile and a phal but I'm not sure. I'm hoping to wait for the spring when the new growths finish growing and see how it actually and fully grow. but over all I am still confused about these.

Dendrobium victoria is a tropical high land dendrobium found in the Philippines. "THERE BLOOMING SEASON IS ON THE DRY SEASON" which is March - May here also known as Dry Rest. They grew new growths on June ( Wet Season ) and I Dry rest them on December ( start of the Cool/Chilly Season ,watering them once a week with a bloom fertilizer ) as they start to shed there leaves . Tip that i`m gonna leave you is that never water too much your Tropical Dendrobiums like the victoria , anosmum , aphyllum , and sanderae when there is a small bump it`s going to be a keiki rather than a flower after you rested it

@MissOrchidGirl 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, it means I give them almost no water at all :) depends on the orchid, some can stay unwatered for a month, some will shrivel a bit too much so I will run just a bit of water through the pot to maintain the canes in good shape :) yes the kingianum should do well in bark, it is a litophyte orchid in its natural habitat.

I took a risk a bought an Ansellia Africana (Leopard Orchid) earlier this month. Research tells me that I can grow it much the same way as a dendrobium. But: I MUST OBSERVE IT'S DORMANCY PERIOD! When does this so-called dormancy period begin. By looking at my orchid, I see tall, narrow, plump canes. Leaves are starting to yellow. It is in a very open media in a clay pot. Apart from the initial planting, I have only been spray watering the top surface.....something tells me he wants to stay dry during winter. Your thoughts?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 7 жыл бұрын
Oh that's a pretty orchid :D well is it growing anything? roots, new canes? or are the new canes mature already? rests come when vegetative growth is done and canes are mature, but there's one little problem. You repotted it, so I am not sure if it liked it, depends on its stage on the moment. Orchids with very specific growth patterns can be a bit fussy with when you repot them, like catasetums and deciduous dendrobiums,. They usually take a repot best when the new vegetative season starts. No panic, but is it still growing anything actively now?

I'm so sad because I ruined my Akatsuki Komet King :( I found it this summer and was so happy, but it was planted in soil and after I repotted it in bark the roots slowly died off. I had hope because it started producing lots of keikis and all of them grew roots. After a while it became hard to water the plant because the roots of the keikis were very long, growing high up on the canes, so I had to spray them... and it was late autumn when they started growing, yeah. Then of course the two canes started rotting at the base because the medium was too moist all the time, and I had to separate the keikis (8 of them, on 2 canes). They were around 10 cm long and all had much longer roots, so I thought it was OK to pot them. Sadly, every day one or two keiki started rotting and now I have none :'( I kept the two cut off canes, but they're pretty shriveled up. I don't think I'll get a new keiki out of them... Stupid winter, my two other Dendrobiums are also off season, it's hard to maintain them in these conditions (dry air because of the heating, then sudden cold when I open the window and never enough light...). I also have two Dendrobium phalaenopsis, one started 5 spikes, now I see one bud has dried, two spikes stopped growing and one has a dry top - I bet it's because I leave the window open at night (otherwise I can't sleep). The other den.phal. is new, bought it in Ikea - it was huge, had thick canes and 3 spikes, the biggest already in bloom - of course I had major bud blast when I brought it home and had to repot it because it was - again - planted in soil... Damn winter conditions... And why the heck do they sell orchids in soil?? Now I'm afraid the orchid won't do so good, the roots will probably die because of the medium change... :'(

Besides Miss Orchid Girl, also check with Maria Young of MY Orchid Adventures...not sure where you're from but she's helped me a lot in re-hydrating when I thought orchids were a goner! Don't understand the soil thing, they're not the terrestrials right? Problems could be from the soil, takes time for the orchid to react so probably not your care, they were already in trouble with the soil I think.

Quick question: I repotted her 2months back, and noticed after the repotting, some of her outer roots browned while inner roots remain moist, green and healthy (there's new root growth too).And the pseudobulbs have stopped shrivelling in 2 weeks after I watered her sufficiently daily.
