I drove truck in the late 70s early 80s. I was in a truck stop in Florida waiting for a load. I was parked next to some crazy movers (bedbuggers in trucking lingo). Moving trailers are huge inside, with vertical metal strips every couple of feet to secure load straps. These guys had all the doors open, side doors, and stung straps side to side and wrapped moving blankets around to form a hammock. The 3 or 4 blankets locked each other together. Hanging out (literally) all day and telling stories was a blast. I think a hammock made of Dutch’s Cloud 71 would be a great “mocking” hammock for warm weather. 🙏 Thanks and cheers!

Mocking is how I got into hammock camping. I’d take a cheap hammock car camping with me and while in my campsite, I’d lounge in my hammock and read, or nap. I’d sit in it sideways and use it like a chair. I’d hang it in my backyard and do the same. Then I got my kids their own cheap ones and we’d all mock in the backyard. Then I came to KZbin to try to figure out how to make ir more comfortable. And found Shug. And now I hammock camp.

Back in my 20s I had a nylon "net" style gathered end hammock - cheap light compact thing that took up next to no room in my pack - that I'd take up with me while camping for relaxing in during the day and I'd sleep in my tent at night. It wasn't the most comfortable thing to lie in with the thin nylon cords, or I might've been tempted to try sleeping in it at night (and probably would've had an uncomfortable cold night - because I knew nothing about how to set up a hammock for sleeping - that would've put me off hammock camping for life). Now I hammock camp but I was given a large Mayan-style hammock - quite heavy and bulky to carry - which is ideal for lounging around - or "mocking" - on a sunny afternoon.

Happy new year shug! I'm sure you've answered this 500 times but I couldn't see it in the 4.3 seconds looking lol. Why do you prefer to hang your head end lower then your feet ?? Thank you sir and great job on the bass playing, sounds Dandy.
@shugemery13 сағат бұрын
It is just a preferred way to hang. Puts me in my sweet spot and I don't have worry about my feet sliding out the end. Warbonnet hammocks always recommend feet high and it is in their instructions. Thanks on the bass stuff. I truly enjoy playing it. Brings me joy and always learning stuff. Foot High info: Blackbird, Blackbird XLC, Traveler hammock Setup: The following describes a detailed setup method that should result in maximum comfort (vs. simply hanging between 2 trees and getting inside, which works also.) Find 2 trees that are ideally 13-17′ apart. Hang the hammock so that “once occupied” the foot end is about 16″ higher than the head end, and by “end” I mean the end of the fabric, not the attachment point on the tree itself. Since the foot end needs to be significantly higher, the easiest way to achieve this is often to just position the hammock much closer to the foot tree AND attach the webbing to the foot tree at head height or above. Having the head end farther away from it’s tree means it will sink more when you get in and that is usually what you want. The BB/XLC/Traveler is designed to be laid in “off-center” so that your head is very close to the head end of the hammock while your feet are alot farther away from the foot end. This allows the fabric under your legs to spread out properly when laying on the diagonal. To do this you’ll want to lay so that your eyes are aprox. even with the farthest side tieout (BB or XLC) so that one tieout is even with your eyes and the other is chest level. Once you are laying in this correct spot you will then determine if you want the head/foot end higher or lower. Most people will want it setup so that when your eyes are even with the tieout that you are basically level/horizontal f

Shug, I'm curious about the Superior Gear Hammock you have there. Have you reviewed them? I've learned a ton from you and you've made a great impact on my camping in recent years. Thank you.

Not a proper review as such but have used it on many trips and there are shots of it all through there on those videos. But I will be. Thought just showing me using it would be good for my regular viewers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3KbZ5eJaMmnm5Isi=e9xB4N26tG0PP0c0 Timeline in description box below this video. Here is a Playlist with trips where I use in, even down to -31º.

Thanks for the video Shug as always! Love that superior gear hammock. Been eyeballing it for a couple years now. Hard to beat my amazing Warbonnet Blackbird XLT. Hey, what are the socks you mentioned a few years back that you wear in the winter time? I bought some and LOVE them but can’t recall what they are called. Was it possum fur? Mole fur? Why am I thinking it’s possum fur? Let me know if you see this comment.

Shug. I understand when people wake up at dawn in Greece. People are some are really angry. Beause :Dawn is tough on Greece. At least it is a clean joke.

That made me laugh out loud. Funny as I have been writing my memoir and Greece is a big part of it.

Great video Shug! I have a question for you and I don’t remember hearing the answer in your cook kit videos. How do you measure water for your meals in your imusa pot? Does it have measurement markers or do you eyeball it?

I have a few marks scratched on the inside but I mainly just wing it.
