On tree spacing: I know what I like but my last hang was suspended on a single tree rather than a pair. It was the lower limb of a leaning tree. The limb was plenty big and nearly parallel to the ground. I'll use that again next year. It had a unique springy-ness unlike a double tree hang. I prefer a little spring in my setup.

Its very true that you need to enjoy the tinkering. Anyone I've brought out that isn't a tinkerer goes back to tent life. Id say there are over 20 decisions to be made every time you setup a hammock. Plus those you make before you leave the house makes for an custom setup that unique every time you use it but also somehow makes it feel like home.

My biggest problem while getting my first hammock was the whole what size to get and what underquilt will fit. Almost laid down my search when I accedentaly stumbled upon a model with sewn on insulation at a really low price point and bought it right away. For me I learned the most by actualy using it. Also it gave me a really good idea on what characteristics I personaly want a hammock to have and what to look out for when buying the next one. Probably a Superior hammock to keep that integrated insulation, I like having this comfort. Thanks for your videos Shug, I always find them very relaxing and entertaining at the same time! I get by with a closed cell pad, bag, and wool blanket over the top, in to the low 40's next to water-which is not cold it's just as cold as it has been on my few weekends to hang. A few times it's been too warm, or too windy at the beach. Hey-blew my mind how cool a a summer hang gets if you wet your hammock, or get in with wet clothes. SO much evaporative cooling and heat being sucked away it's great when the weather is right. If I ever get to go more, I'll need an underquilt for the Fall woods. To emphasize what Shug said about insulation. Before the pandemic, we hangers here in Texas would have an annual Butt Bake where we went out to a specific spot and had a group hang at the end of July. 2018 I think it was, it was 104 F during the day. On Saturday it was 105. That night, a cold front blew through and the temps dropped to 69. I got cold in the hammock. Because my body temp was slightly higher than normal, and your blood thins out in high heat. All I would have needed was one of those silver windshield protectors to slip under me. Never take your insulation for granted. As Shug said, when you're in a hammock, you're got air flow all around you.

I have honestly looked at and considered hammocks before for camping for a few years, but never pulled the trigger for two main reasons. One, I am very uncertain I will be comfortable in a hammock. And second, the cost for the full setup adds up fast (hammock, suspension, bug net, top cover for cold weather, hammock sized tarp (my current tarps are a bit too big), and underquilt), and the total was coming close/exceeding 1000USD, which is a lot of money to risk on something not working, plus I already have all the ground camping gear I need, so why not just get another (smaller) Hilleberg tent instead that complements the bigger one I already have.
@shugemery4 күн бұрын
I get that. But you can get a whole set up on amazon for about $30....search Wise Owl Outfitters Hammock for Camping Hammocks Gear for The Outdoors Backpacking Survival or Travel - Portable Lightweight Parachute Nylon - Up to 500lbs Throw a pad in and you can see if it fits your style if you really want to. Hillebergs are really nice tents though for sure.

@@shugemery Ya, I have considered something like that in the past, though I would have to import that one (in Canada) or pay a fair bit extra to some third party who lists it. To use anywhere but in the city I would also need a bugnet (or use a ton of bugspray, as permethrin is banned for sale), or about 70-80USD in total. Being in Canada I have looked at ordering everything at once (in this case a dutchware symmetrical chameleon) as it is often cheaper and simpler when importing. Cheers!

First time in a hammock was the old nam fish net hammock on okinawa in 90 degree weather it was warm 24 hrs. Then in Missouri in 80 degree days it was cool. NowvI use avbridge hammock with an air mattress in 50 nights. It really isn't just being able to concentrate on one thing. It is knowing a lot of thing. LastvtimevI used a hammock 2 yrs ago rafting the john day river in or. There were only 2, yes 2, tree in the whole area of where we would Camp at night. So wasn't much choice in where to hang justvhow to hang. And 30 mph winds made ut interesting too.

Hey Shug! Happy New Year! As always, a great video with lots of food for thought. Even for us more experienced hangers. I’ve been saving my pennies and want to buy one of your paintings. I looked on your swag shop, but couldn’t see any. Are your painting still available, please?
@shugemery4 күн бұрын
Thankee for watching. Sorry...I have no painting in stock currently. Had a flurry of buyers at first and then it slowed dow so much I just let it sell out and will re-think the whole thing.

@ Thanks for responding. Best wishes for the new year, and looking forward to seeing more of your videos!

Could we hear a stroy about the beret on the lamp? Bet it has stories.
@shugemery4 күн бұрын
It is my old Boy Scout Explorers beret. I collected pins from all over the world in my show biz travels and they live on that beret. Sometimes Meg and I look at it and are surprised that we got to visit so many places.

You are always funny and entertaining to watch! Donyou think you could hang the hammock directly on the tarp ridgeline with prusiks(with adequate cordage) and control the sag on the spot? Narrowing them to sit like a chair or widening for sleeping. Do you think prusiks would hold?
@shugemery2 күн бұрын
Never tried. That would need to be some story Tarp Ridgeline though. I know I like to be able to adjust my tarp separately.

Hey Shug, as always another banger of a video. Last summer I got myself into a Superior Gear 30 degree, wonderful piece of equipment. Wondering if you have any tips on working around the feeling of always having your legs extended or stiff. Is that a ridge line thing? Or an angle thing? Hope this makes sense. I’m just a guy trying to hang my own hang!
@shugemery4 күн бұрын
Yes...experiment with the ridgeline. Try different lengths. Make sure you buttocks is centered in the hammock. And yes, try less angle. The SGs are sort of narrow hammocks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXerp4tra79-hNU

Thank you Shug, I always told friends and family that I would never get wrapped up in calf ridge. A lot I know!

The best advice I can give is tie your knots repeatedly in the off season when you are bored. Its a lot harder to tie up when its chilly and breezy and practice makes perfect.

I got distracted by your thing Nader the clown photo. I thought it was a HD logo, then a carousel, maybe a manger scene but it goes round & round.

That is a painting of my Ringling Clown face a lady did years ago. She passed away and someone found it and I needed up being able to buy it. And yes that is a circus tent light-up thing my wife got years ago. All the performers move and spotlights shine on them.

Hey Shug! Shrub here! Funny story: I was watching your video, and Mrs Shrub was listening but... lightly dozing.😴 Well, you were getting a little animated and Mrs Shrub woke a little bit and asked me "why is that guy saying he's The Hamburglar"? I said, "What guy? This isn't a McDonalds video." She said "But the guy in the video... he keeps saying he's a "Hamburglar". A little later it dawned on me...... Hammocker!! You're a hammocker🤣🤣🤣
@shugemeryКүн бұрын
Hey Shrub. I sideline as a hamburgler..... she is partially correct!!!!
