I've heard from a few different southerners who said their accents fell out of favor or were even considered something of an embarrassment when they were growing up in the 90s/early 2000s so they avoided speaking in the thick local accent. But now people are seeing the inherent worth in their people and culture and are happy to lean into the accent much more. One woman talking about it was from West Virginia and her family had fairly thick accents but she didn't.
