I live in Manchester England, and there’s only a handful of palms that can be grown with success, because they must be frost hardly. The thought of being able to plant a young Coconut into the ground and watch it grow into a beautiful full grown Coconut palm tree, I would just love to be able to do this......Do people in the tropics do this, and if you did plant a Coconut Palm in your yard or should I say garden, how close to your house, I ask this question because of the possibility of falling Coconuts being a danger to people and property.

Even before a coconut palm grows tall, it'll form a very large crown. This of itself will not make it wise to plant too close to any building, because the individual fronds can be 6 feet long, or more. And yes, of course, when it's taller you have the significant problem of not only falling coconuts (which includes the smaller, immature ones), but the dead fronds as well. Even the dried flower clusters are pretty big and you wouldn't want to be hit by one of them either. In cultivated areas, coconut palms have to be trimmed regularly to prevent this danger. In Hawaii, you mostly will see coconut palms grown in places where they are trimmed, and people rarely plant them in home gardens because this is an expensive task. You do also see coconuts growing more "wild" where they aren't trimmed, in rural areas.
