Hi. Great info! However, I would like to add a bit about how to "wash" dirty plants. There are two problems with the technique used here. It can work to some degree if you are in a hurry, but there are two important points that it will not take care of. 1. Washing you plant with normal water like this, will not disintegrate and clean grease that might have built up. Many dusty plants have a grease layer, because that is what makes the dust stick in the first place. If you have a bath tub, fill it half full with luke warn water and then add some dishwasher. Tip you plant up-side-down and swish it through the soapy water. This will disintegrate the grease. Then clean the plant with your shower as shown in the video. All the soap should come right off and none of it will be left behind. And best of all: the grease is gone for good! 2. using normal tap water on your plant's leaves, will over time build up a mineral and calcium layer. A single wash will not be a problem, but if you make a habit of it, it will also clog up the leaf pores, this time with minerals from the water. Most plant really do like a thorough shower once in a while, it is like a real rainfall for them and they instantly freshens up. But you should use de-mineralised water for this. Make it by boiling a large pot of water and leave it to cool. Then strain it and you will end up with de-mineralised water! Put it in a humidifier and spray you plants with this. They will love it! And no minerals will deposit anywhere.

@@user-tw4yo7xk9n No, soap doesn't do annything to your plant. Spidermite spray calls for unscented dish soap and rubbing alcohol. If you use too much alcohol it can burn your leaves though. You have to test it on one leaf first as to not kill the whole plant of something went wrong.

Thanks! I needed to prune a neglected £20 one I picked up for £1 at my local supermarket. Shame the way they pack clusters of seedlings together. It took me ages to realise that's why my supermarket herbs in pots weren't thriving.

Supermarket herbs are the worst for it, they put so many in a pot that they often just die after a few weeks because they are all fighting for space.

My Parlour Palm has not been doing well so I've been watering it more frequently. I also removed the yellow/brown leaves. Fingers crossed. One question: Since I've cut off so many near the stems (not cutting off the terminal bud though) I have a lot of dried up brown bits near the bottom of the stems. Is it ok to cut of pull off those old bottom brown parts? Thanks.

If it isn't staying upright it is usually because it doesn't have enough light, or the roots are loose and the compost need topping up. You can tie it to a small stick or bamboo cane to help support it until the new growth under higher light levels comes through.

Once a month is probably not enough, you will need to check the compost every few days and water when the top layer of compost has dried out. In summer my plant is watered almost daily in hot weather and in winter only every week or two. The pale leaf could be due to lack of water if your only watering once a month.

Hi there, I have possibly overpruned mine after it got sunburned. It's growing oddly now, how do I describe this? From above it's growing outwards at 12 and 6 but not at 3 and 9? I have dry white tips on some leaves too. Where I pruned it back to the bottom of the leaf stalk that cut part is now brown and doesn't seem to want to begin a new leaf shoot. I would love to revive this plant! Any and all tips welcome!

Yes if its a faded pale green its either too much light or too little. The brown tips are due to dry air. Try moving it to a location where it still receives day light but doesn't have any direct sunshine on it. Also try spraying it with water regularly and also feed the plant if you haven't already as a lack of feed can also cause pale leaves.

Parlour palms do not have the ability to shake their leaves, it's either vibrations from vehicles, people walking nearby, an animal or your breath.

I showered my palm and now it’s looking very flat 😰 I used the softer shower setting but still seemed to flatten the leaves/stems. Will they strength and perk up on their own accord or will I need to support them back to full strength? Or is this the beginning of the end? 😓 I also have another that seems to have been cold shock damaged and is also suffering from being very flat but he is a much smaller and thinner plant.

They should perk up after a few days, they usually suffer more if they are grown in low light conditions as the leaves tend to be longer and weaker than when they are grown in higher light levels. As long as your cold shock plant didn't go below freezing it should recover, although as this plant grows slowly you may have to wait several weeks until new leaves start to appear.

No, unfortunately none of these types of palms will propagate from cuttings. All the specimens you find in nurseries are grown from seed which is a difficult endeavor in and of itself, but you could probably divide the clump of plants to get a new pot of them going. Do be careful if dividing however, because the roots are fragile and don't tolerate being messed with too much

Yes, just wash it under a shower to clean off any dust and dirt. Just make sure the water pressure is not too high as weeping figs have a bad habit of bleeding very easily when damaged.

Brown tips are usually due to low humidity, too much salt in the soil or the soil has been allowed to dry out. Keep it misted in dry weather or move to a more humid location, also make sure the soil never fully dries out. The salt issue is less likely and is normally only found on plants that have been fed a lot or have been in the same pot for several years.

No, I would give them a break from feeding as they don't have enough light and warmth in winter to grow much. I normally stop feeding my house plants in October and start again in March when the sun gets stronger.

It can be a little tricky to separate them, it depends how long they have been growing together and how much their roots warp around each other. If you separate them, slowly tease the outer plants away from the group trying to keep as much root as possible. You may need to keep the separated plants misted for a few weeks until they grow more roots as they will likely loose several roots when you try to pull them apart. If the roots are not too wrapped up together you can wash away all the compost and see if the root ball will then fall apart and let you separate them all. The roots are fairly fragile and snap easily so which ever method you try make sure you do it very slowly and carefully.

No. Cutting any stem on a palm kills it. Palms only grow from the heart of the palm (the growing tip). I was a bit shocked at the over pruning in this video. I have parlor palms and I just cut off the old leaves when they turn brown. Also remember that each stem is a separate plant. Nurseries sell these bundled together but count each stem as from a separate seed. Most come in bundles of 15-30 plants.

Try to remove as much of the scale with swabbing alcohol as you can. You can cut back hard as long as you leave at least one fully developed leaf on each stem, however do not cut back the stems as they may struggle to regrow.

I'm not sure if it can be propagated from cuttings, I've certainly never seen it done before. If it still has some stems in the pot then there is a chance that they may start to sprout and produce some new young plants. Keep the plant in a warm bright location and keep an eye out for any new growth, but be careful not to over water it. The plant won't need much water until it regrows its leaves again.

I normally feed it about every two weeks in summer and not at all over winter. I use a balanced feed which is a little bit higher in Nitrogen. The higher nitrogen levels encourage it to produce larger leaves. I would still feed your plant, worm castings are very good for improving the soil, but do not have many nutrients.
