My grandfather was German soldiers on my fathers side, although he didn’t where a helmet he was a Tiger tank commander and later got captured by the Americans sent to a prison camp in late 1944 to Nevada which is where I live now ironically he enjoyed being a tank commander so much that in the Korean War he joined the US army where he was a tank commander of a Pershing tank. Great information! Those are the coolest helmets of WW2. Thanks for explaining when the changes took place and what years they occurred. M 35's were nice for military parades, however not so much for combat situations. I recalled the Russian snipers said that the national shield made great targets to sight in on. I think it might be the same situation for the leather boots they wore which were not ideal for combat situations.

Furthermore the Finnish army had thousands of "original" German helmets, mainly m-40 type, which were bought from Germany 1943-44. After the so- called Continuation War these helmets were refurbished and often an extra pair of rivets were added to these helmets for the new liner system. I should think, most m-55 helmets have the same feature. Yours Tuomas (Samout)

The first M35 was a apple green color then in 1937 they changed the color to a field grau or a dark olive green color . Around the same time they switched from aluminum spit pins to steel spit pins . In 1940 they started switching to the M40 and was still doing double decal until the Wermeche said no more double decal except for the military police. Get a chance try to get the book made by Brian Ice helmets of the German military 1935 to 1945 ,its on Amazon and is very informative.

The airvent on the M35 IS important. It is a separate peace (like a rivit)as opposed to th M40 and 42, where it is part of the helmet. It is the most distinguising feature between the M35 and M40/42. Pardon my French...

I have an m40 finn helmet which is still confusing me. I had some of the spray paint removed exposing two more layers of paint, one being some dark green, the other being a very grass green color. The rivets are that of a german liner but the liner itself is a finn one. Most people say I own a special sort of helmet with a strange and color.
@worldwarguy4595 жыл бұрын
Recorder Playing Weeb not sure about the paint. It all depends on where you go it from, previous owners could of painted over it, change split pins, or the Finnish army could of just had them painted many times. Personally I don’t think it’s a special helmet, but just that many people who owned it before changed it to what they wanted.
@hanstragarsky13402 жыл бұрын
What is always overlooked of the Finn helmets is that there were some that came from German use, so what your most likely seeing with the dark green is German paint, same with the split pins.

there was also a limited edition helmet used by some special Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine land units named "type 43" or "m-43" mostly black or km-blue colored, looked like a bit smaller, tighter but more robust model "m-42". Pretty rare to find but of higher quality steel so most preserved pieces are in good condition and amongst the more expensive german helmets of WW-II.

World War Guy I see a lot of them on ebay in various conditions. But collectors warn about buying one on ebay.because of the frauds out there taking post war helmets and aging them to pass as "found on a battlefield" or "authentic" helmets. I saw a really nice M42 last night in very good condition, with all rivets in place, for $450.00. That seems a bit suspicious.
@worldwarguy4596 жыл бұрын
It's always a gamble buying off the internet. I was lucky to get mine at a run-down antique shop that was a Vet-bring back for a good price. The good thing is that the M42, to my knowledge, was only produced for Germany during World War 2. So finding an original on eBay is more likely to have an authentic shell but it's the liner, decal, chinstrap, and paint to be weary of.

Heard a story that Finns were quite annoyed with air whistling thru the air vent and blocked then with wood splinters or small sticks. No idea if that is true.
@worldwarguy4596 жыл бұрын
It is possible, I know that the Germans did that during World War 1.
@averagejoeschmoe91866 жыл бұрын
I guess it applies more to the m16 style helmets than to these later models, as the taller design fitted differently depending on the bearers head size. Both the earlier and later models of the Stahlhelm were serving in the Finnish defence forces till 1960s, then they were fully replaced By other less distinctive and dull designs.
