My 2009 GL550 has needed a power steering fluid reservoir and a rear hatch latch release in 122,000+ miles. I could not be happier with its reliability. Maintenance costs are high, but that's to be expected on a 6,000 pound Mercedes. It's still as solid and strong as ever.

for the diesel engines especially the OM642 there is a big issue with the oil cooler seals located in the V section of the engine , very cheap part to replace but involves a lot of work as you have to remove everything above the engine including the air intake assembly

One of the common issues of this car is with the voltage regulator of the alternator, when it is worn it can send voltage peaks to ECU and because of this the error informed using star diagnosis is a defect throttle body assemble. If you don't replace it you can spoil the ISM (Intelligent Servo Module) that controls the gears and also the ECU can avoid the car to start the engine. In this last case, only with the Star Diagnosis scanner you can release the start. Also, pay attention to the bushings of the steering bar, if you car squeaks when goes through springs break it is a sign they need to be changed as soon as possible.

I bought new GL 320 CDI 4Matic back to 2009 and never had a single bigger problem with it. Biggest issuse was clime control broke down once and thats all. With normal driver this car is more than legit daily driver. Its more like a street tank. Sold it 2 years ago and want it back every single day.

Darrin Jones I have a 2012 and have had to fix oil leaks twice now at a cost of $2,000 each time. Plus had a bluetec heating element go bad ($1,300 dollar part, and now the bluetec pump is bad, another $1,000. I’ve owned the car for 5 years and I’ve had to put in $7,000 in maintenance. Great drive and fits my family well, but very poor quality engine and bluetec system. No wonder they stopped bringing Diesel cars to US (plus they are being sued by many for cheating on emissions). I will never buy a Mercedes again.

There are hardly any problems with these cars including early versions. I have had a 2007 for years and it has been in essence faultless. Yes I have replaced a turbo pressure sensor (inexpensive) four airbags and shocks (normal for 244000 kilometers) and two sets of sway bar linkages. If you buy one of these find a decent non dealer based Mercedes specialist who is honest and you should enjoy these awesome machines just as I have. Owned my 2007 GL320 for years, its been the most enjoyable car I've ever had and the longest I've kept a car. Where did the author of ths clip get your tripe from?

Australian GL450 OM629 V8 diesels had a factory dealer service campaign to replace engines where there was a 10 litre oil sump fitted - replacement engines will have a 15 litre sump

The V8 diesels were known for oil starvation too and replacement engines with larger capacity sumps can be found in GLs & G wagens

Timing chains and AdBlue heaters are big-ticket bills on the 350 bluetec along with the oil dropping from the turbo air intake onto the swirl flaps, which is why I got a 420 v8 which doesn't seem to be prone to any of these issues. Of course now I find that the odd 420 has popped its head gasket. Sigh..

we had 2009 model leased, we all loved it very good car, but my brother in law's 2008 model caught on fire and it was a complete loss too after watching the video, i think mine may had a issue with suspension, besides that issue it was a wonderful car

I have a 450 2008. Works great and did a lot of extras, I got New custom bumpers, skirts, Led lights and drl, bigger rims, etc. Get a lot of complements and the hardon carmon stereo is very good.

I *love* the ole CDI x164!! The little turbo diesel has over 400lb/ft of torque and gets surprisingly good fuel mileage for a big suv. The only problem I've had was the air suspension went out in the front, but as mentioned in the video it's pretty routine on these. I'm also going to have to do the oil cooler seals to fix that damn oil leak >_< 2008 320 CDI

Pretty good report i own a 2011 with 114kmiles gl450 w 4matic with air matic all said is true. I think biggest issue is suspension not good enough for this size of car. I also believe the quality of the interior plastic could be much better. While running an audi a8 at same time with 250kmiles this air supension from audi is much better. My opionion big star and thin steel. Thats mercedes.

I have one that I am thinking of selling. Canada. 130K. This year I did a major repair to oil heater leak that is almost grantee to happen every 120K. So my suggestion, if it is fixed buy it, if not make sure you put 3K aside when the time comes because they will fail. I also replace the suspension air compressor and 2 air shocks. Once again, if recently replace buy the car cause those are grantee to fail every 80-100KM.

well, you know, every car can have certain problems it's all about choosing the right engine-gearbox combination or buying that exact car from certain year

juuio you need to buy a nissan nv passenger ..... those things are awesome ! Good old low tech - simple, effective - works! And very reasonable priced. The only draw back on those is gas mileage .... the v6 gets about 15-18 the v8 gets 12-14 If you tow 12000 lbs with the v8 you are lucky to see 7 mpg .... But besides that - hands down great vehicle. I have one and i know a hand full of other guys who have them .... they are robust and reliable

just in case anyone is actually looking to buy one of these, my mom bought a 2012 gl brand new and after one year of ownership, the window switches fell apart, the driver window stopped working, the parking sensors stopped working, and a myriad of computer issues came to be and the dealer's quote was $17,000 to fix everything. on a car that was barley a year old and had 8,000 miles on it. needless to say that car is no longer in our lives, but definitely beware of these cars.
