Differential Gear Oil Change Tips!

Changing the Gear Oil in your Differential can be a smelly, nasty job. Here are a few tips to make you differential oil change is a success.
1. Drive the vehicle several mile to heat up the gear oil.
2. Loosen the fill plug before you drain the gear oil, this will ensure you can refill the component before you let all the oil out of it. This goes for any component with a fill plug.
3. The diff cover will be stuck. Use a hammer and chisel/screwdriver/scraper to break the seal of the cover, and pry it awat from the housing.
4. Use a file to fix the cover where you just boogered it up.
Clean the mating surfaces with a Roloc Bristle Disc.
5. Use a LubeLocker Gasket, Ultra Grey, or "The Right Stuff" RTV to seal the cover back up.
6. Use a oil safe thread sealant on the gear oil fill and drain ports.
7. Buy the Gear Oil in bags instead of bottles, it's soo much easier to fill with the bags. Valvoline and Amsoil sell gear oil in bags. You can buy just one bag and refill it indefinitely if you think they are overpriced.
8. Fill it until it flows back out the fill hole, then add just a little bit more, because you are a man and overdo everything.
9. Go take a couple showers and still smell like gear oil.

Good call with the Valvoline bag bottle Ive learned to love the anaerobic sealant, as soon as it's bolted up you can dump in oil without having to wait for it to cure, also it seals forever, rtv eventually leaks after 3-5 years in my experiences

Ultra Black has always worked for me. I just like the convenience of the gasket if the diff has to come back apart soon.

Don't forget about lsd additive if you need it. Also you can always refill the valvalene with cheaper oil

Ever tried a suction based fluid change? There's machines for it or you could use a fluid transfer pump like a man, works pretty well! No playing with the seal dough

I like to be able to inspect the internals, so I just open it up. My Duramax truck has a drain plug in the rear diff...found that out after I pulled the cover 😂 The squeeze bottle is easier than any pump I've used.

Nope. Not unless the engine is already shot and you need oil thicker than the thickest engine oil you can purchase economically. 20W-50 is roughly the same.

Funny story… I’m so used to not having a drain plug, I pulled the cover off my first Duramax, just to discover that it had a drain plug 🤦🏻‍♂️

I am still weary of the one time I changed the gear oil in my Mark VII in the 90’s. I need to do the excursion, but I’m just trusting the 22 year old buttholes Ford put in there. I have no shame.
