Differential is simply the difference between the set point and where the tstat calls for the unit to cut on and off. Most times it is 2 F such as if you have the tstat set at 70 F it will cut on at 72 and off at 68 for cooling and on at 68 and off at 72 for heat.

They were not without problems, but they generally outlast the electronics. GFM

Great tutorials. Quick question, do you have any wiring tutorials for those old Honeywell fan limits? Those are before my time as a tech. I'll be honest, I don't get to do many repairs / service calls on older systems. It's either changeouts from existing or from scratch (new construction). Investors, flippers, huge rental companies and the like. Just last week we put in i put in 7 AC's (coil condenser) and 5 furnaces (coil condenser furnace). That's an ordinary week - year round. Get in get out. I'll most likely never see those systems again once i close the door behind me. Is it worth my time learning older tech? Thanks.

I would rather use the word "Hysteresis" instead of "Differential" here. I don't know if that's the term used in the industry, though.

Hysteresis is a scientific term. I generally try to use descriptive terms where I can. As I have been a teacher, its important to simplify whenever possible. GFM
