I changed the diff oil and used exacfly 2 liters since i installed the z1 diff cover and solid bushings also threw in a short shifter and messed with the boot a bit, I’ve noticed that when im driving hard I sometimes get a small whiff of gear oil in between shifts it’s inconsistent in higher gears and like I said it only happens if i’m going full throttle, i’m not sure if this is because i messed with the shifter boot or something else. Please let me know what you think and thank you for everything that you do for this community.

That's odd... you shouldn't smell diff oil from inside the car. I would check for leaks or sweats, and wipe up any spilled/overflow gear oil on the diff. Also, make sure the sifter boot is properly seated and sealed. You shouldn't be able to see any light through it. One last point: Thank you for your kind words!

I didn't use a transfer pump when I did mine. There's enough room to position the bottle (I used Mobil 1) right next to the fill hole. You simply keep squeezing the bottle to fill the diff. Once fluid starts to leak out from the fill hole, you are done.

I am planning to buy a jack and stands and not really sure which ones to buy because of the height. 14 inches of clearance are enough to work in convenience under the car? I have same car like your's. thanks!

Hey Yahia, Thank you for your kind words about the videos. I appreciate it! I just measured my jack stands and at the maximum height they are 17". Since I am a skinny guy, I don't need much room under the car. Any name brand 75W90 synthetic will work well. You don't need any special "limited slip" diff oil, as the type of limited slip used on the G/Z is a sealed "viscous" limited slip. Some types have clutches and those requires a friction modifier in the diff oil. Many have used RedLine 75W90 diff oil without any problems. This is also what I am going to use for my next diff oil change.

Hey Ivo M, I used a floor jack and axle stands. They can be purchased at Canadian Tire, Walmart, Amazon or any auto parts store. You will need to read the factory shop manual to understand where the jack points are -or- if you have a G37, pop over to myg37.com and do a search. As you can guess, you need to know exactly what you are doing putting a car on jack stands. If you jack the car up at the wrong point, you will damage the car. If you place the jack stand at the wrong place, you will damage the car. Also, if the jack stands are not in the proper spots, the car can slip and fall off them, damaging the car and injure or kill you. Be very careful!

However, Redline does list it as compatible with "Genuine NISSAN Matic S ATF" so you should be good to go :) Please let me know your thoughts on the diff brace.

Motorvate DIY ok great, looking to purchase redline 75w90 oil from Z1. I have a 6 speed manual also ! As for the diff brace, I’ll let you know how it goes. I’ve seen videos of pulls/runs recording the diff without the brace and it moves/jumps/vibrates. This puts more strain on the diff and bushings. Once the brace is installed it takes away all the diff play and vibrations. Also, it minimizes wheel hope and grounds your rear wheels to the road for maximum power/torque! I’ll give you my update..

@MotorvateDIY3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ishak Zaghari, The oil I used, was 80W90 non-synthetic oil that I purchased at my local Nissan dealer. The owner's manual stated the 75W90 is only to be used on the 2 wheel drive cars, with an automatic trans. I will be replacing it with 75W90 synthetic this spring. Also, there is no noticeable difference between 75W90 and 80W90. Generally the 80W90 is a little more "thicker" at colder temps, which is a little odd to specify that. So... just pick up any name brand (Redline, Mobile 1, etc) synthetic 75W90 and you are good to go :)
@ALoHA21324 жыл бұрын
Planning on doing this to my G37x. Just to make sure I don't do anything wrong, I'd have to do both front and rear differentials since its the AWD model right? Also, as I was reading the manual, it said that for 7AT 2WD models use 75w-90 but other models use 80w-90. In my case, I'd use 80w-90 that contains "limited slip" correct? since it's not an RWD system (just wanna make sure)
@MotorvateDIY4 жыл бұрын
Hey Ian James, Since your G37 is all wheel drive, your differentials are not limited slip. This makes it easy and you can use just about any 75W90 GL-5 differential oil. Many G37/30z folks use a Redline's 75W90 GL-5 without any issues. Also, you don't need to worry about 80W90 vs 75W90. The 80W90 is slightly more viscous ( or "thicker") below 100C/212F but is the same thickness at and above 100C. Make sure to wipe off the diff drain magnet, as it will be full of metal grit. Good Luck!

I have a 2019 370Z port coupe with the 6MT transmission and had to have the differential replaced recently due to leaking oil seals. With 500 miles now on the new diff after a careful break-in, I would like to change out the fluid to get the metal particles flushed out. Nissan specs an 80W-90 conventional Hypoid gear oil for the car and I was curious as to why a conventional rather than a synthetic oil was specd.

Hey Jim Nesta, I don't know why Nissan says to use a non-synthetic fluid. BUT many 370/G37 owners have put in full synthetic 75W90 with out any issues. I will be doing the same at the next diff oil change. As for changing the diff fluid a 500 miles, I don't think that is required. The drain plug has a magnet on it, so any metal debris is collected. What is the differential and will not changing the fluid be as catastrophic as let's say the engine oil?
@MotorvateDIY6 жыл бұрын
Hey Christian Omenyi Jr, A differential is used to provide torque to the drive wheels. Rear wheel drive vehicles have a differential at the rear and it is a separate unit. Front wheel drive vehicles have a differential built into the transmission or transaxle. Here is a very good video explaining how it works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGWTi3V6dqxrY9E As for the oil changing. Many people never change their differential oil without issues. BUT for anyone who wants to maximize the life of their car and keep repair costs down, the differentail oil should be changed every 3-6 years depending on how hard you drive the car. Engine oil generally needs to be changed every 5,000 - 10,000 KM to keep the engine happy for a long time.

Matty that is really low mileage for a 2013 G37! I always follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual or the service and maintenance guide that came with the car as a starting point. Hi i have a 2008 nissan 350z with 19000km. Do you think it's necessary to change the transmission and differential fluid considering the fluids are 10 years old but with extremely low mileage? Love your vids very informative! Subscribed!
@MotorvateDIY6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, If it was my car, I would change them. It is fairly easy to do and not too expensive. 10 year old oil will have lost some of its ability to lubricate and prevent metal to metal contact. If you plan on keeping the car, it would be worth it and give you peace of mind know your almost new 350Z is being looked after. By the way, with your mileage you should be changing your engine oil every year.

@@MotorvateDIY do I need to buy rear diff oil specifically for LSD for sedan sports? Or can I just use normal gl-5 rear diff oil?
@MotorvateDIY Жыл бұрын
The limited slip diff is a "viscous" type. This means it is a sealed unit and you can use normal (non-lsd) diff oil, typically 75W90.
@Qkfltpdls777 Жыл бұрын
@@MotorvateDIY 08 g35 sedan’s FSW says 80W90 for rear diff fluid. Do you still recommend 75W90?
@MotorvateDIY Жыл бұрын
You are correct and for some reason the rear wheel drive G35/G37 calls for 80W90 and the all wheel drive calls for 75W90. Many have used the 75W90 without any problems. They are very close in viscosity a lower temps, and the same at higher temps. There is no wrong choice :)

what the diff between diff oil and gear oil?
@MotorvateDIY4 жыл бұрын
Hey James Alan, Generally differential oil is as slippery as possible to reduce friction. Gear oil (for a manual transmission) needs to have a specific amount of friction, so the gear syncros work and we don't grind/crunch gear when we change gears.

Hey NjBoRi 973, Since most people never change it and they seem to work forever, there is not set schedule that I know of for the G37 (or most cars... Trucks are different and usually have a schedule of when to change it) For me, since it is fairly quick and easy, I change mine about every 5 years or 60,000 - 80,000 miles (96,000 - 128,000 Km)

Why do you need 2 when you can fill it up with one diff fluid
@MotorvateDIY4 жыл бұрын
Hey Alvaro Silva, I guess it depends how much you get out. The factory service manual states the capacity of the differential is 1.4 litres or 1.5 quarts. When I did mine, 1 quart (.946 litres) was not enough.
@newphone35945 жыл бұрын
Manual says only use Genuine Nissan fluid or you will damage differential. Is that BS? Says same thing for transfer unit fluid and transmission fluid.
@MotorvateDIY5 жыл бұрын
Hey New Phone, A differential is a simple device that only has a few moving parts and any 75W90 GL-5 will work just fine. As stated in the owner's manual, the differential fluid needs to be GL-5 80W90 or GL-5 75W90 depending on model. It doesn't have to be anything Nissan specific. Many people use a full synethic like RedLine GL-5 75W90 without any issues. From the 2011 G37 Owner's Manual: For 7A/T 2WD models: API GL-5 Synthetic Gear Oil Viscosity SAE 75W-90*7All other models: Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Hypoid Super GL-5 80W-90 or API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80W-90*6 Now, for the transfer case and transmission, they are much more complicated. I would only use what is listed in the owner's manual. The wrong fluid can damage the transfer case and transmission.
@newphone35945 жыл бұрын
@@MotorvateDIY Manual says for 2wd use 75w140 and for AWD use 80w90.

You bring up a very good point! The G37 owner's manual says: "For 7A/T 2WD models: API GL-5 Synthetic Gear Oil Viscosity SAE 75W-90 All other models: Genuine NISSAN Differential Oil Hypoid Super GL-5 80W-90 or API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80W-90" G37s with rear wheel drive (aka G37 Journey) with the 7 speed automatic transmissions use 75W90 for the differential oil. The 6 speed manual cars use 80W90. However, the weight of these oils are so close it won't make any difference. Since 75W90 is much easier to get, most people use it without any issue.

This is not correct. You are overfilling the differential system. If you get to the point that it's dripping it means you have 1.9 liters in there. Manual says fill 1.4 liters and that's how much actually comes out when you drain it. I think it's possible to cause some sort of damage when you overfill it.

@MotorvateDIY5 жыл бұрын
Hey Masimka Macim, I don't have any first hand knowledge of the G37/Q40 automatic transmissions, as mine is a manual 6 speed. However, the automatic transmissions in the G37/Q40 do seem to be very reliable. According to the factory shop manual, there is no need to change the automatic transmission fluid. BUT if that Q40 was my car, I would change it every 50,000 - 60,000 miles just to keep the transmission happy.

Hey JJ Walker, The front diff is the same process as the rear diff and uses the same fluid. The transfer case uses a special fluid "NISSAN Matic J ATF" and the drain/fill process is the same. Feel free to check your owner's manual list the required fluids in the "Technical and Consumer Information" section.
