In this song Boy George was referencing equality, taking a page from the Rastafarians and their ““mantra”. The red is for the blood of all living things in the world. The gold is for all of the treasures in the world that people cherish. The green is for the earth that people walk on. George was looking for acceptance and equality, in his personal and professional life.

If i remember correctly this song was written for a fellow bandmate who was in an on/off relationship with Boy George yet couldn't bring himself to come out. Tensions were constant and both of them were suffering. Chameleon because in society he could hide the fact that he was gay quite easily

This is true. Boy George said this was about the drummer of the band John I think his name is... anyway, they had a whole secret affair cause BG was sorta kind of out or at least not overtly heterosexual in the 80s/not seen as straight and John didn't want to be roped into that image. I think BG may have said John didn't think their relationship was "gay" or something like that....basically Boy George wrote this and other songs and lyrics about his extremely closeted boyfriend at the time.

So I was a psychiatric nurse, which above medicine and psychology occasionally demands more physical restraint of some folks. (26 years, never ever hurt a patient, and only got dinged once myself.) Anyhow, we based it on a course called Management of Assaultive Behavior. (Every cop should take this course - and pass.) One big class I taught had about a dozen new emplyees. What I didn't know was one was ex-UCLA women's basketball guard, another taught martial arts in his spare time, one was 6' 10" and a bit clumsy, and one li'l ol' gal was 4' 10", stretching. To pass the class, each one had to pin me to the floor - without damage! Every one passed, even the wee girl I had my doubts about. It's all a skill set, you see. Now, why am I telling this story? The day that wee girl (who became good friends with me for decades) was able to restrain me, she was dressed just precisely exactly like Boy George. It was one of her favorite looks. And, let me say, she carried it off far better that Boy George!

Boy George and Culture Club blew up in around 1982 I was 8, and it changed my life. You understood the point of the lyrics..exactly. He just wanted to enjoy life being himself and free from judgments and oppression. Being a shy and isolated child, I could not express my emotions. This man meant everything to me. Most of his wording is metaphorical/ emotional/ spiritual. His gifted vocals and emotionally deep lyrical talents.. were the entire point. George saw the world through a uniquely emotional lens. I love him to this day.

I loved the 80's because, it was like I could be a chameleon. One day I could look like Vince Neil, then Blondie, a cowgirl, a break dancer, a punk, anything I wished. It was a blast. I could even talk Valley girl sometimes to crack people up. Put on those leggings, poof my hair, throw on pumps and be a Valley girl for the day. This takes me down memory lane that's for sure.

I saw them LIVE...1985... The first time I heard them was on MTV...our KZbin, lol... I didn't know if he was a guy, or girl...because the groups name came and went so fast, no replay, no GOOGLE, so I had to wait to see it again, and then I saw Boy George and Culture Club...He has a Beautiful voice! He has loads of great songs...I was smitten by him even if he is Gay...i still love him. What is the meaning behind 'Karma Chameleon'? Boy George once explained about the song: "The song is about the terrible fear of alienation that people have, the fear of standing up for one thing. "It's about trying to suck up to everybody. Basically, if you aren't true, if you don't act like you feel, then you get Karma-justice, that's nature's way of paying you back." Boy George wrote most of the band's lyrics, and many of his words were inspired by his relationship with the group's drummer, Jon Moss. Their difficult romantic/professional relationship was also the inspiration for the line: "You're my lover, not my rival" in 'Karma Chameleon'.

Yes the singer , Boy George, confused a lot of people. He was the first Gender bender. As a very “out” gay man. He sang “I’m a man without conviction. He dressed in a way which mixed traditional gender clothing with a large dash of his own personal style which kicked off the fashion for gender bending, mixing it all up, encouraging gay and would be trans people to be seen and be proud. Long before the rainbow warriors of today.

Hey Mr. Video! You should check out these three songs by Culture Club. "Church of a Poison Mind", "Miss Me Blind" and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me". These will show you some of Boy George's vocal range, they are GREAT songs, and I think you would like them and have an honest reaction to them. Thank you. Peace...Be Safe!!!!!

George actually explained that the lyrics of a lot of their songs , were about the o again, off again relationship between him and a guy in the band had. I forgot which one, though and that the guy had problems admitting it to himself that they even had one. At least that's what George said in an interview.

They guy he had a relationship was with the Drummer Jon Moss although he always denied it! Drama always seems to create good songs though.

Thing is, we are far more accepting of LGBTQ people today than we were in the 80s, and we're still not completely chill as a society. Even Freddie Mercury felt a lot of pressure to put up a front. At the height of his fame, George Michael felt it necessary to live a double life, and the weight of that had a lot to do with his tragic addictions. Just gotta say...in context, Boy George had balls of solid rock to be so uncompromising with his image. It took guts. #respect

Welcome to the 80s my friend. 😁👍🇬🇧Great song, great band. This was one of the bands I used to listen to growing up in the 80s. Boy George the lead singer, is now a judge on THE VOICE AUSTRALIA. They have some fantastic early tracks for you to react to, Do you really want to hurt me, It's a miracle, Church of the poisoned mind, later songs include, Clouds, Human zoo, King of everything, & Life which is my favourite 😁👍🇬🇧🇬🇧

I was so obsessed with Boy George in the 80s as a kid. I made my Nan buy me a book with pictures of him at a yard sale when I was around 5. I still remember her saying " That's an interesting looking lady" and the look on her face when I told her it was a guy. Hey, it was 1986, she didn't know.

Boy George has made a pretty decent comeback after years of substance abuse and very low periods. He came out with some new music and has been a judge on The Voice in the UK and Australia. Two of my more recent favorites of his: King of Everything: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHSxd2athcykfMU and Nice and Slow (my favorite!!): kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaasqXmOjcmaa5o I'd love to see you react to one of these.

Boy George is a fantastic singer. He hit his peak of stardom with this song and a few more when I was in high school. He was very flamboyant and a little controversial at the time. He had a terrible drug problem for a lot of years. In interviews he described just how horrible those days of drug use were. He came close to death a couple of times by overdosing. Many of his friends ended up dying because of their addictions. Eventually he sought professional help and became drug free. He said that if it wasn't for making that decision he would have definitely died.

I won tickets to see Culture Club in Santa Cruz back in the day. Had no idea about Boy George, I expected something like a soulful quartet of young black kids. The lady back up singer nearly stole the show. They were really great! About half the young people at the show were dressed like Boy George. Too bad he got hooked on horse.

Boy George didn't care about race religion or anything, he saw people for who they were in the hopes he would be seen that way himself, loving would be easy if your colours were like my dreams, hes a man of conviction to his beliefs, he wanted a unified world

Do you really want to hurt me is another one . I know you said don't judge but just a fact, he was arrested in NYC for possession of cocaine and got community service, the press hounded him because he looked nothing like he did in the video. But that is the price of being famous!

I love how you were confused about George's gender but politely refrained from saying anything. However it's a shame that the reason you had to do that is because trolls would get butt hurt and start attacking simply because you were unsure. Those kind of people are among society's worst.
