Nice to hear my old colleague Brenda Harris...a truly wonderful singer.

Some had trouble with the high note, but most had trouble landing the bottom at the end of that scale. Violeta Urmana had he most even from top to bottom. Varady impressed me too, though her bottom range is not rich.

Varady had one of the strongest chestvoices (elsewhere).

An embarrassment of riches..So many truly valiant efforts. I can understand why so many prefer the superb Sutherland, She simply sings so well, always. But ideally, I prefer a heavier voice in the role. I was extremely impressed by the enormity of Urmana's sound and her intensely dramatic approach.

Love Marilyn Zschau (perfect pitch to C and clear descending scale). The other sopranos have their own strengths. Some do justice to the enunciation, beat as well as emotion. Sutherland seems to have the best overall technique based on my instinct and limited knowledge.

Love Sutherland's effortless version. Mancini's was a brave but unfortunate effort.

Surprisingly, Dimitra Theodossiou was my favorite. her voice sometimes sounds quite threadbare even though she can do shockinly complex and amazing things with her instrument. I believe she sang the role on stage. Here, though, her voice sounds really fresh, plumby and powerful. Her top C was held for a satisfying amount of time and had a nice round bloom rather than a screamy wobble, the bravura run is super clean and powerful and descended into full connected chest tones. She was, to my recollection, a daring and somewhat controversial singer, but this is outstanding! It makes me want to reexplore her work.

Haha shrill high notes for Sutherland, what planet are you from? She was known for her full high notes when everyone else’s sounds shrill and weak, thats what the critics said, not my words

Odabella is a warrior role and demands some authority. Written for a drammatico d’agilità. All female singers need to use a good chestvoice. Preferably a dark timbre and doesn’t have to sound sweet in this role (neither do Lady Macbeth or Abigaille need that). A lyric like Varady could sing this because of her fantastic development of the voice. Sutherland was a big canarybird in studio without, diction, attitude or chestvoice so obviously ruled out. Stapp, Galvany, Roark-Strummer, Dimitrova, Gulin usually deliever in these roles.
