SYNOPSIS
A gay, closet screenwriter, Darrel, is forced to collaborate on a project with another writer, Ryan. As the partnership grinds on, Darrel is forced to confront and accept himself for who he is deep down inside.

I think people missed the question "...are you happy?" If you had experienced one point in your life sacrificing your own happiness for the sake of your loved ones (to not disappoint them) and losing yourself along the process (not coming in to terms with one's own sexuality and losing that one person you can share your true self for the rest of your life), then it is really not that hard to get the point of this wonderful but sad short film...we can see at the end that Darrel (Ryan Erwin) is sad and lost...and probably broken...as that little broken tip of the pencil may suggest...I really liked this film very much, it brought back sad memories on my part.

@DynapubsA lol I agree. Especially in the beginning, there's not enough to setup to justify the story later in the film. Now looking back at it, I feel the entire piece is a bit too compressed. Thanks for watching the film and your comments! I greatly appreciate it!

@acadhdspeaks As far as tuition goes, ECU isn't too expensive. It will cost you around 4 grand per year, which is way cheaper compare to a school say...VFS. Also, you can get a lot of experience just by doing PA work on filmshoots on the side. Craigslist is your best friend, and check out the union's website and see what film productions are going on and offer your help on the sets. There are also lots of books and tutorials on youtube as well.

The film did seem incomplete, the troubled guy in my opinion had shut his life down. He doesn't want resolution, his comfort is his unhappiness. The film itself was interesting, but mostly to seasoned film buffs. Life one of the comments below "If you haven't lved it you can't feel it".

Ryan Erwin isn't a good actor, but definitely is a handsome man. He really made all the issues of this bad executed short film worth my time.

@acadhdspeaks well I've never been to SFU or UBC, so I can speak about my thoughts on ECU. I think it really depends on your financial situations and what you want out of your 4 years program. ECU focuses more on "ideas" instead of technical skills, which can be a big disadvantage when you leave the program to work in the industry. It's a great school if you plan on being a freelance, independent filmmaker instead of working in the union and doing physical labor in the beginning of your career.

CrisVangel1958 yeah, i have lived it and i know, but i didn't think that they did a good job making it a complete thought. they just ended it suddenly and didn't use any falling action. it was cute, but had no climax and no completed framework to make it look purposeful. It just looked like they ran out of time or money or something and stopped.

Ideally viewers shouldn't have to read the comments after watching a film to find out what the film is about. In any case, the comments to-date strike me as guesses, not interpretations in the usual sense. Intercuts & flashbacks or forward & stream of consciousness are all fine techniques, but they don't work without some clarity. I don't know how much ended up on the cutting floor, so to speak. But the project is over & I'm guessing there's not enough material to create that clarity. Too bad.

@acadhdspeaks Hey sorry for the late reply. If you expect to hit big and get lots of employment offers after graduating from the program, it most likely will NOT happen...So far right now, I just have a full-time job to pay my bills and work on my passion independent projects on the side. That's the way I want to expand my career. The other choice is joining the union, but from what I heard are long hours and long devotion (that can last for years) of a lot of unpleasant labor.

Nice work. I like the title, but I think its actually too soft. Your movie really evokes the fears and anxieties being gay can manifest. And one can better see the linear connection to impulsive and sometimes self-destructive behaviors. That's 'frenzy resulting from fear' not, 'modesty resulting from lack of self confidence'.
