In every society there are specific segments of the population that try a new product or adopt a new behavior at different stages, but it always follows the same pattern, the "S" Curve. In this short video we introduce you to the concept of the "S" Curve and how it works to spread a new behavior across the population.

Nice animation and presentation. The 12.5% early adopters should actually be 13.5% (for a total of 100% in all five groups).

So if this mainly speaks to a given communities potential to adopt an idea, growing the potential community over time is also a metric that must be considered, right? For example if theres an infrastructure problem, you'll still see this same rate of adoption for people who can potentially use the product, but the lack of infrastructure locks most people off from ever using it so you would also plan around improving infrastructure. Another example: A brand new hockey stick comes out thats unlike any stick thats come before and offers various advantages to players. Throughout the hockey community, the stick spreads on this S curve. As the curve flattens, the stick producer can no longer grow their business, they can at best hope to reach a maintenance point where a stick breaks once a year so each player buys one stick a year until they stop playing. The hockey community would have to grow for sustained profit increases. They can find ways to shave off costs and more efficiently produce and distribute sticks but this can only help so much before you have to degrade the quality of the stick for further growth which could tarnish your consumer's trust and destroy your brand. Makes me wonder about companies like Tesla. Currently the cost per car is too high to reach a greater market so affordable cars will likely be a large leap in their growth, but where do they go from there? I suppose as the leading EV brand, if the world shifts in that direction then they're first in line and people will leave their current car brands behind but I wonder how prevalent that will really be? They could also be the first in line for autonomous driving which could be highly profitable in industries that need people to transport cargo / other people by vehicle.
