AnandaBhadram is a 2005 Malayalam Romantic Fantasy film based on a novel by Sunil Parameswaran. AnandaBhadram marks the debut of cinematographer turned director Santosh Sivan. AnandaBhadram consists of an ensemble cast of Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kavya Madhavan, Manoj K Jayan, Kalabhavan Mani, Biju Menon, Revathi and Cochin Haneefa among others. Popular Bollywood actress Riya Sen made her debut in Malayalam with AnandaBhadram. The film was inspired by the paintings of Raja Ravi Verma, Theyyam and Kathakali dance movements, and Kalaripayattu, an ancient martial art form.
In the ancient village of Shivapuram, little Ananthan hears the story from his mother Gayathri, played by veteran actress Revathi. Ananthan's family comes from a line of powerful magicians responsible for protecting Nagamanikyam, a jewel on the serpent's head, known to bestow good luck to the possessor. The jewel, she says, lies in a secret place in the house guarded by snakes, including a tiny snake called Kunjootan.
Years later, according to the wishes of his dead mother, Ananthan (Prithviraj) comes to Shivapuram to light the lamps at Shivakavu, a dark and mysterious temple of Lord Shiva. On his way to home, he meets Maravi Mathai, played by ace comedian Cochin Haneefa.
His idea of lighting the lamps at Shivakavu is opposed by the local black magician Digambaran, played by Manoj K Jayan. Digambaran uses the superstitious beliefs of the local people to his aid and succeeds in opposing Prithviraj. It is revealed that DIgambaran has his own motive for opposing Ananthan. He wanted the Nagamanikyam stone and has been working on it for a long time. Ananthan, who was a non-believer finally meets the supernatural for the first time.
Ananthan tries to fit into the local environment and succeeds in winning over the local people's hearts with his easy and kind manners. Meanwhile, Ananthan's cousin Bhadra, played by Kavya Madhavan falls for him and his light hearted flirting. Eventually they both fall in love with each other. At one point, Bhadra is torn between accepting Ananthan's love and becoming a goddess herself in a mystical ritual of self-offering.
Meanwhile, Ananthan is attacked by Digambaran on his way to Shivakavu, He is saved by the blind martial arts expert Chemban, played by Kalabhavan Mani, who stands in the way of Digambaran's hunt for the Nagamanikyam. The evil black magician Digambaran then takes over Ananthan's mind. He also manages to remove Chemban from the way. He lures Chemban's sister Bhama, played by Bollywod actress Riya Sen.
A series of sensuous and evil rites follows that feature some exotic Kathakali and Kalaripayattu art forms, some magic spells and special effects.
In the end, Ananthan and Bhadra escape Digambaran's sinister tricks and unravel his conspiracy to the villagers who believed he was a good mystic. In the climax fight, Digambaran is destroyed and Ananthan restores the Naga Manikyam.
Anandabhadram boasts of a rich cultural collage with various art forms such as Theyyam, Kathakali, Kalarppayattu. Director Santosh Sivan also drew inspirations from Raja Ravi Verma's paintings in various song sequences. Manoj K Jayan wore long nails, kohl-lined eyes for his role. Riya Sen learnt Kathakali for her role in the film. The sequences of Manoj K Jayan using Riya Sen as a channel for Black magic used Kathakali movements in particular. Fight scenes between Kalabhavan Mani and Manoj K Jayan extensively used Kalarippayattu.
Anandabhadram songs were composed by M.G.Radhakrishnan, senior music director and carnatic vocalist. Initially Vidyasagar was signed for the film. But Santosh Sivan rejected his work and signed M.G.Radhakrishnan for the film. Radhakrishnan went on to win Asianet Film Awards for Best Music Director while M.G.Sreekumar won the Best Male Playback Singer Award for the song Pinakkamaano.
Anandabhadram was one of the biggest hits of 2005. The song Pinakkamano became the biggest hit among Malayalam songs in 2005. The film also inspired KJ Bose's Tanthra.

Manoj.k.jayan's portrayal of Dhigambaran was too perfect. The impact that character made in the cinema as a whole is so magnificent. Even the ending visual was so disturbing for me who watched it as a child for the first time. But i was floored by Prithviraj much more because not only he did an amazing job on his character Anandhan who had to go through a rollercoaster ride of emotions and adventures of his own, he successfully showed his brilliance by acting the "parakayapravesham" scenes where he almost a 100% looked and behaved like Manoj.k.jayan's dhigambaran. As an actor he showed his extraordinary skills and i am in absolute awe.

സുനിൽ പരമേശ്വരൻ എന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരൻ മലയാള മനോരമ ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പിൽ എഴുതിയ "അനന്തഭദ്രം" നോവൽ ആണ് പിന്നീട് ഒരുപാട് മാറ്റങ്ങൾ വരുത്തിയാണ് സിനിമയാക്കി പുറത്തിറക്കിയത്. ഉദാഹരണത്തിന് കുഞ്ഞുകുട്ടൻ എന്ന കഥാപാത്രം സിനിമയിൽ ഒരു സർപ്പം ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ നോവലിൽ അത് ഭദ്രയുടെ അനിയൻ ആയിരുന്നു. ഇതേപോലെ ഒരുപാട് മാറ്റങ്ങൾ വരുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഒരു വായനാശീലമുള്ള സിനിമരസികൻ ആയ ഞാൻ സിനിമയേക്കാൾ നല്ലത് ആ നോവൽ ആയിരുന്നു എന്നു പറയാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു. കഴിയുമെങ്കിൽ ആ നോവൽ താങ്കൾ വായിക്കണം. ഉറപ്പായും ഒരു video ചെയ്യാനുള്ള ഉള്ളടക്കം ആ നോവൽ തങ്ങൾക്കു നൽകും.

Very nice interpretation, congratulations. Did anybody anybody knows this story was published in Malayala Manorama weekly as a novel. I read it from the beginning to end. Most of the story parts (end portion) were excluded from the movie due to some reasons. I went to see it just because I wanted to know how it's picturised on big screen. But I was little disappointed because so much interesting and gripping events from the novel were excluded in the movie. Biju Menons character had lots of importance in the novel. If you anyone can get it try to read it, but I think it's not available as it was not published as a book. Anyway the movie was really a masterpiece

ഞാനും അനന്തഭദ്രം നോവൽ വായിച്ച ഒരാൾ ആണ്.ഇത്രയേറെ പുരാണ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ ആണ് ഇതിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ ഉണ്ടാക്കിയത് എന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നില്ല. കാരണം ആ നോവലിന്റെ തീരെ ചെറിയൊരു outline മാത്രം ആണ് ഈ സിനിമ. ഇനി നോവലിലെ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ആണ് ഇങ്ങനെ explain ചെയ്യുന്നതെങ്കിൽ രണ്ട് സിനിമ എടുക്കുന്ന time വേണ്ടി വരും 🤪 അത്രക്ക് മികച്ച ഒരു നോവലാണ് 🤗 തീർച്ചയായും പുരണങ്ങളും വേദങ്ങളും ദുർമന്ത്രവാദവും എല്ലാം പഠന വിധേയമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ടാകും. But പേരുകളിൽ മാത്രം ഇത്രയേറെ effort എടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നില്ല. കാരണം അതിലും കൂടുതൽ പഠനം നടത്തേണ്ട ഒരുപാട് ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട് ആ നോവലിൽ. ക്രൂരനായ ഒരു ദുർമ്മാന്ത്രവാദിയെ എത്രത്തോളം ഭീകരമാക്കാമോ അത്രത്തോളം ഭീകരമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട് അതിൽ. കൂട്ടിനു കുറേ പ്രേതങ്ങളും രക്ഷസുകളും 🥵😖 അതിന്റെ ഒരംശം ഇല്ല സിനിമയിൽ. കിട്ടുകയാണെങ്കിൽ ഒന്നുകൂടി വായിച്ചു പേടിക്കണം എന്നുണ്ട്. ആ പേരുകൾക്ക് പിന്നിലെ കഥകൾക്കും കണക്ഷൻസിനും എഴുത്തുകാരനെക്കാൾ കൂടുതൽ effort എടുത്തത് താങ്കൾ ആയിരിക്കും 🤗🤗🤗
