I learned how to fire by methodically trying all the keys. Helped a lot with pirated copies of games back in 90s.

Two tips : If you dig under a bag and while you are under it, keep pressing up arrow the bag will not fall. Plus, while holding a bag if you fire you will fire backwards.

Another tip is to take the cherry with as many enemies as possible. Every enemy you kill while cherry frenzy will pop again afterwards. In level 1 for example he could have made 500 more points easily. And 25 extra if you manage to kill the last enemy and eat the last diamond at the same time.

in 1986 on IBM PC XT 4.77MHz, 640kb memory, CGA, 20mb HDD, floppy disc 5.25" 360kb it was my 4th game after SOKOBAN, ALLEY CAT and TETRIS which I played...

So I been LUCKY... most of people had Atari, Amiga (rich), Spectrum, Commodore (poor)... So fast I upgraded my PC... EGA, VGA, SVGA... 286, 486, Pentium... extend HDD, RAM, floppy drive... but so long I had my first old desktop case - SENTIMENT...🥲

Hint for this game 1. Use F1 to Shoot enemy. 2. Dig up to gold sack and push up when enemy come , run away and the bag will fall 3. When you push up gold sack you can fire backward 4. If you want to play silently to avoid your parent Use F7 or F9 to mute (I cannot remember clearly but it is odd number) 5. collect diamond 8 piece in a row (do-re-me-fa-sol-la-tee-do) will earn more score

There is also a level editor in this game! Not many people know the tune generator in this game uses a very advanced PWM technique which is not possible on modern digital sound cards!

Wow, so this is what the game is supposed to look like. Had a shady disk full of old DOS games (Alley Cat, Shamus, etc.) and this, but it wouldn't switch to a correct graphics mode on my 286 with VGA and playing the game was a bit difficult with garbled textmode display... you could tell there was something going on, but not what. The music worked though.

How did they manage to make a sawtooth wave sound with the PC speaker? The PC speaker is only supposed to do square waves.

therealhardrock Square wave with non-50% duty cycle sounds similar to sawtooth, this games does PWM. PC hardware supports this, and many games even use PWM to play samples.

Actually, there are many games which could do sound-blaster quality sounds with PC Speaker. Mach 3, Electro Man, Another World, World Class Leaderboard, Metal Mutant and some more.

The term "square wave" (which is a type of pulse wave) is DEFINED by having a 50% duty cycle, making its waveform square, as in equidistant on all sides. If you change the duty cycle of a pulse wave, it is no longer a square wave.

Gosh. You really played so safe. And didn't maximise to possible score. 1. You should stop killing after bonus arrived. 2. Eat them will score higher than shoot them 3. Finally after Bonus finished then only you kill them all but remaining last one. 4. Finish all gold and left one diamond 5. Finally finish level by kill the last unit. This will give you the maximum score you can get in one level. You should do that in first three level, it is easy. Else level 4 above I agree to play safe like what you did.

4,5 Stand next to the last diamond (They're emeralds BTW); 6. While the bullet is on its way, eat the last emerald. The bullet will carry on and kill. That's the way to get to the ultimate maximum points at a stage. (Plus, once you have 5 men, start committing suicide to get two bonus stages.)

A super easy way to implement “hard mode” in this game would have been no shooting, which was how I played it anyways because I never knew shooting was available. Lol, it’s no wonder why it was so freaking hard!!

you need to install dosbox then just google download digger msdos game. dont forget to set the cpu cycle to reasonable level. there are many tutorials out there it's easy to set up.

It's a smart and challenging retro game but it's too frustrating when the little guy doesn't make a turn where you want it. The turning cases are not aligned with the moving cases The idea is not to chase all diamonds, but rather to hide and take down those goblins

i dont think so. but the way you can get more score is: do not eat all the diamonds. leave one diamond and then eat the cherry bonus, then keep firing the goblins until the last one died .

At 1st level max points 8625,after 2nd you could get 19925,but its hard,because you should eat emeralds in 8ths to get 250 bonus points every time.

@@nurburgringkid thanks,basically to get max(or close) points it make sense to keep max quantity of monsters before digger eats cherry( entering bonus mode),and then try to catch them all.Lets say for 4 monsters you will get(250+500+1000+2000)=3750 points alone. But as you progress through levels its much harder to chase them,also you have less time. So it has to be right balance. My personal record is 78975. I can not imaging how people reach more than 200000 points,must be incredibly difficult.
